UPDATE: In sad news for Alec Baldwin, it turns out that he is doing Rock of Ages after all, according to Deadline. Below is the original article, which you can now make fun of for being inaccurate in retrospect.

Adam Shankman, director of Rock of Ages, has been shamelessly bilking Hollywood star after Hollywood star into appearing in his movie. Now, finally, it appears that at least one person has broken free of his seductive grasp – star of”30 Rock” and those ads for Hulu, Alec Baldwin.

Baldwin has dropped out after being confirmed by Shankman back in March. He was supposed to play “Dennis Dupree, the owner of the Bourbon Room, the Sunset Boulevard nightclub at the center of the movie.” I guess now they’ll have to get Stephen Baldwin to do it instead?

Some of the other actors not as savvy as Alec Baldwin include Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Russell Brand Paul Giamatti, Malin Akerman, Bryan Cranston, and Mary J. Blige. Well, you know what they say – never give a sucker an eve break or smarten up a chump. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Vince Vaughn Continues Being In Movies With ‘Lay The Favorite’

After the mighty four-pack of awesome movies that is Fred Claus, Four Christmases, Couples Retreat and The Dilemma, I know most of you out there are tearing your hair out for more Vince Vaughn. “I gotta have my Vaughn” has become a popular expression around college campuses and night spots. Well, not to worry Vaughnonauts, cause Vince has booked another role.

Vaughn has joined the cast of Lay The Favorite, starring alongside Bruce Willis and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Based on a book by Beth Raymer, it’s the story of a married gambling legend (Willis) who gets involved with a younger woman and figures out a system for getting an edge on Las Vegas. Sounds like he’s gambling with his money… and his marriage. That’d be twice the stakes, according to movie math. Vaughn will play the role of Rosie, a bookie from Long Island. Hopefully the role is at least somewhat money.

Stephen Frears is directing from an adaptation by writer/producer D.V. De Vincentis. (Deadline)

Bryan Cranston For Mayor (In ‘Rock Of Ages’)

Bryan Cranston is blowing up faster and hotter than a meth lab explosion. He’s the bad guy in the Total Recall remake, he’s bringing his voice to Batman: Year One, and now he’s been cast in future SNL punchline Rock of Ages in the pivotal (how many pivots can one movie have?) role of “the mayor.” Cranston is joining a cast of names more famous and less talented than he is, including Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Mary J. Blige, Russell Brand, and Paul Giamatti (OK, the “less talented” part doesn’t go for Giamatti).

More specifically, he’s husband to the Anita Bryant/Tipper Gore-type played by Catherine Zeta-Jones who wants to ban all rock and roll. Oh no! Will rock and roll be able to survive this cultural onslaught? How about rock or roll, separately? I think rock has a bit more vigor than roll does – I hope roll pulls through OK. I’m sure they’ll both be OK – this is America, after all. (Deadline)

Catherine Zeta-Jones Latest To Be Suckered Into ‘Rock of Ages’

The filmmakers behind Rock of Ages have no shame. They’ve duped poor, defenseless Tom Cruise into appearing (among others), and now they’ve managed to ensnare Catherine Zeta-Jones in their web. Here’s director Adam Shankman on Zeta-Jones, presumably barely able to contain his malicious grin:

“She’s the moral majority person, kind of like if Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant had a love child in that era. To have a great actress who won an actress in this genre with ‘Chicago‘ is wonderful.”

Unfortunately, it looks like Shankman’s reign of scheming will not end with Catherine Zeta-Jones, since he has at least two parts left to cast: Tom Cruise’s love interest (who was originally going to be played by Amy Adams but she decided to be Lois Lane instead), and “the mayor.” Please, actors and actresses, stay inside your homes for your own safety. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Judy Greer To Flirt With Their Kids’ Soccer Coach

It looks like director Gabriel Muccino (Seven Pounds, Pursuit of Happyness) is branching out with a project that won’t make everyone want to cry. It’s crazy enough to work.

Despite the unfortunately punny title, Playing the Field has some things going for it, not least of which is the cast, which added the likes of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Judy Greer to existing players Gerard Butler, Dennis Quaid, Jessica Biel, and Uma Thurman. Damn! There’s some good-lookin’ folk in this soccer dramedy.

The movie centers on Butler, who plays a troubled former soccer player who attempts to redeem himself by coaching his son’s soccer team, which seems to be ground zero for hot soccer moms, including Biel, Thurman, and Greer. Needless to say, his dalliances get create some tenions on his path to redemption. Quaid plays another handsome soccer coach, meaning that these kids’ games probably turn into hot orgies of the wealthy by halftime.

That said, the script is currently undergoing revisions by Stuart Bloomberg, who has shown a deft hand with Keeping the Faith and The Kids Are All Right. So it might not just be about good-looking older people banging. But if it is, that’s okay too. (LA Times)

Bruce Willis Coupling With A Woman His Own Age In ‘Lay The Favorite’

Lay the Favorite has swapped production partners and gained a Welsh beauty, which means they came out ahead. Catherine Zeta-Jones has signed on to the gambling flick as the wife of a gambling legend played by Bruce Willis. The Town‘s Rebecca Hall will also get mixed up with Willis as he tries to crack Vegas’ system.

Focus Features dropped out after the project’s budget hit $20mm, but Pathe, undaunted, decided to step in so that the project doesn’t miss a beat. $20mm doesn’t sound that high for a Bruce Willis movie. Maybe Focus should stop being such babies and sack up to make some money.

Not sure if CZJ has the draw she once did in her Entrapment days, but it’s nice to see her up against (literally and figuratively) Willis in this project, as seeing Willis with a 25 year-old starlet kind of grosses me out. It’s fine for his ex-wife, though. (Deadline)
