Nobody said adapting The Great Gatsby would be easy. Baz Luhrmann has never been one to back down from an ambitious project and there’s no doubt that he’s been working overtime to bring the classic novel to theaters. However, he ignored the golden rule. No running on set.

While filming in cramped quarters just before Christmas, Luhrmann struck his head while passing beneath a camera crane. He hit the weights that balance the arm and cracked his head open as a result. Three stitches later, he’s fine but shooting was shut down early before the holiday break, giving Leonard DiCaprio more time to hang out on yachts with insanely hot women. I wish him a speedy recovery, though it’s likely nothing hurts him as bad as the reception of Australia did. (THR)

Nicolas Winding Refn has proven himself an okay dude to work with as far as the cast of Drive is concerned. Both Ryan Gosling and Albert Brooks are planning to work with the director again, and now Refn has announced that Drive‘s female lead, Carey Mulligan, will star in his long in the works thriller, I Walk With the Dead.

“I’ve always wanted to make a movie with lots of sex,” says Refn of the project. “So I wrote this story called, I Walk With the Dead and it takes place in Miami and it’s just going to have a lot of sex in it. I have two films that are getting made with French investors and one is Only God Forgives and one is I Walk With the Dead.

Of course, this is just one of many projects on his plate and no timeline has been provided yet. With Drive earning awesome reviews, Refn’s career is thriving which I’m sure is a relief. Considering his ambition was to “make a movie with lots of sex,” things really could have gone differently for him. (The Playlist)

See A Romantic New Clip From 'Drive'

Of all the stuff getting promoted at Comic-Con, the thing I’m personally most excited about is Nicolas Winding Refn‘s Drive. Starring a cool Ryan Gosling, a beautiful Carey Mulligan, an evil Albert Brooks, and more adjective-matched stars, it looks to be an arthouse action movie to give Tarantino a run for his money.

This trailer, fortunately, has done nothing to make my level of anticipation decrease. There are some cool automotive stunts, and glimpses at the aforementioned stars, along with Christina Hendricks, Bryan Cranston, and Ron Perlman. I can’t wait to drive (my Segway) to my local theater to watch Drive!

Carey Mulligan will be returning to Australia for the Gary Ross-helmed Outback. After completing The Great Gatsby. And Drive. And the sex-addiction drama Shame. So, not now, but someday. Meanwhile, Ross is busying himself the The Hunger Games, which is currently shooting.

Outback will be a science-fiction project set in the Australian outback, but beyond that, the logling is being kept under wraps. Tobey Maguire, her Gatsby co-star, will be taking on producer duties for the film.

Nissar Modi will be drafting the script, which stems from an original idea hatched by him and Ross. No other casting news has broken, but it’s a safe assumption that Mulligan will be playing a lead, given her rising stock and busy schedule. (Variety)

Many people (including me) expected Nicolas Winding Refn‘s Drive to be hard-charging action movie in the vein of The French Connection or The Getaway. But apparently it’s a little more complicated than that, as this scene from the movie proves. It shows Ryan Gosling subtly putting the moves on Carey Mulligan, who appears to be trying to look as much like Michelle Williams as possible. This is probably because of Gosling’s insistence on only working with actresses who look like or are Michelle Williams.

You also get to see Bryan Cranston in action as Gosling’s mechanic boss (note: don’t get excited, that doesn’t say “mechanical boss”), which is nice, especially if you’re a fan of”Breaking Bad.” Not much badassery in this clip, but I still have hope for the overall badassity of the movie as a whole. Baz Luhrmann NOT casting an A-list superstar or Academy Award winner in The Great Gatsby is bigger news these days than if he does. With that introduction, I give you – big news. Newcomer Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki has been cast in the role of Jordan Baker. If the name doesn’t ring any bells, maybe you’ll remember her as the love interest of Nick Carraway. If that doesn’t ring any bells, relax. You’re still probably in the top quartile when it comes to literary prowess in America.

I could paraphrase Lurhmann’s thoughts on the casting decision, or I could pass on his words. Here they are:

“It was a surprising result, but Elizabeth’s grasp of the material and her chemical connectivity to Tobey Maguire, in addition to her striking, athletic appearance, had us in a place where we were fully confident and ready to take the leap of giving the role of Jordan Baker to what, I guess, people would term ‘a discovery.’ “

Her Gatsby co-stars include the aforementioned Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio as the man himself, and Carey Mulligan as Daisy. Debicki’s in for a bit of a trial by fire, having come straight from arts college. I wonder if she knows that Tobey Maguire beats his co-stars if they flub their lines. If she doesn’t, she will. (Deadline)

Debicki is such a newcomer that there doesn’t appear to be any confirmed photos of her on the Internet. That should change within the hour.

The car chase movie is experiencing something of a resurgence, with Fast Five actually getting reviews that resemble being in the same general area as “good.” But we’re still a ways off from the 60s and 70s, when true artists like John Frankenheimer, Walter Hill, William Friedkin, and Sam Peckinpah made car chase movies that were hard-boiled, stylish, and CGI-free.

Well, judging from this clip from Driven, which you can watch here, Nicolas Winding Refn is doing his part to bring back the cool car chase movie. And it has reasons to get excited in front of the camera, too: Drive stars Ryan Gosling, along with Carey Mulligan, Albert Brooks, Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks and Ron Perlman. So, even if this clip was terrible, I’d still be there. It isn’t terrible though.

Isla Fisher is in talks to play Myrtle in Baz Luhrmann‘s star-powered The Great Gatsby. If talks don’ break down into Fisher holding her breath until she gets her way, she’ll join the previously cast Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan.

DiCaprio is playing Gatsby, Maguire will play Nick Carraway (the book’s narrator), and Carey Mulligan will play Daisy Buchanan, a woman torn between her love for Gatsby and her boorish husband, Tom Buchanan. Ben Affleck has been approached for Tom, and if cast, Fisher will play his mistress. This is odd casting. Myrtle wasn’t this hot or young in the book. I saw her as more of a Christina Hendricks, but Fisher is a welcome addition to this cast. The only way to settle this is to have those two fight it out in my mind. To the Jelly Pit!! (THR)

Ben Affleck is in talks to join Warner Bros’ new version of the literary classic I somewhat remember from high school english class. He would play the wife of Daisy (Carey Mulligan), Tom Buchanan, a guy who really loves the white race. He’s, like, the white race’s biggest fan. The idea machine that is Hollywood has cooked up a real corker of a concept: British diction specialist Colin Firth should star in a remake of My Fair Lady. Miracle of miracles, whoever dreamed that up should get a Bentley. Firth has been pursued for the role of Henry Higgins in the Emma Thompson scripted remake of the Lerner and Loewe musical before, along with a million other batted around names. The studio wanted Hugh Grant, while original director Danny Boyle wanted Daniel Day-Lewis for the role so much that he even dropped out of the project when he couldn’t land him. Carey Mulligan is attached as Eliza Doolittle, a role that at one point was linked to Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and many others. Current director John Madden still wants Firth, and although the actor is next committed to the Coen Brothers scripted Gambit, he’s the top choice for the film.

The film has been delayed for a slew of reasons, from Mulligan’s shooting schedule, to the rights of the source material being tied up in various places. It seems that CBS owns some of it, as do the estates of Lerner and Loewe and also George Bernard Shaw. Regardless, these are not insurmountable issues, and all parties are reasonably confident that they can get the film in theaters by 2013. Colin Firth will just have to take a yea break from winning every award in history. Maybe he can take a vacation or something. A very proper and British vacation. (The Playlist)

Carey Mulligan consistently looks like she just woke up from a nap. A nap where she dreamed about crying. Despite this, she’s a hot property in Hollywood these days. So hot in fact, that she’s the go-to “not Natalie Portman.” After meeting with a bevy of hot, young actresses, Baz Luhrman has selected Mulligan to portray Daisy Buchanan in his adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Now all he has to do is decide if he’ll do the film or not himself. Sorry, readers.

“There are a few elements that I feel need to be resolved before I would categorically state that this is my next film,” says Luhrman. For instance, working out Leonardo DiCaprio’s schedule, getting Tobey Maguire to commit, and casting all the other roles. Time will tell on this one. If a few months go by and he announces another project, we’ll know this casting process was his excuse to try to meet Natalie Portman. Sly boots. (Deadline)

**Sort Of Spoiler Alert**

Mark Romanek’s cloning drama turned out to be secret screening #2 at Fantastic Fest. Never Let Me Go is about a school for kids who find out they’re being bred solely to donate organs, and they’ll probably die after three or four donations. There was an action movie version of this a few years ago, but it wasn’t very good and didn’t do very well so Romanek’s version may as well be original.

More after the jump…

The first section, when the characters are kids, is a really sweet exploration of youthful discovery. It’s a little more sheltered and innocent than usual coming of age dramas, but it fits with that genre until the teacher explains the plot to them. When they grow into teenagers, they’re still innocent like kids.

Kathy (Carey Mulligan) loves Tommy (Andrew Garfield) but he gets more romantically close with Ruth (Keira Knightley). That is, if they knew what romance was, that’s how they’d be paired off but even that is awkward for these sheltered specimens. For all their education, they still can’t make sense of their feelings or physical touches. Eventually, the trio gets out into the world and they can barely order food at a diner.

The performances are good. They go from innocent to tragic at different points in the story. It’s a really mellow drama about how people live life with limited experiences and information. Once they are adults, the three characters only represent slightly different levels of maturity, but none of them are whole grown-ups.

It’s good sci-fi, just dealing with the concept of people bred for harvesting on a personal level. It’s not that exciting or eventful. They just have to live with this knowledge and either get the most out of life, or resign themselves to being a medical specimen. There’s not much to say because the characters are purposefully stunted, they have so little invested in life.

The language of the film is stark. They talk about “completing” as when they’re finished donating, which means they’ll die. Words like “donor” and “original” take on new philosophical meanings.

The film looks rather dreary, not necessarily because of the subject matter. Just every place from the children’s academy to the overcast city to medical facilities look very gray. Maybe it’s supposed to represent the lives Kathy, Tommy and Ruth lead or maybe it’s just England.

I appreciate Never Let Me Go. I don’t know if I like it. It does things right as a character study and maintains the ambiguity that the Michael Bay version needed. Other than the exercise of doing it right though, it’s not necessarily entertaining.

<p>Albert Brooks isn’t exactly <a href=considered a bad-ass. Finding Nemo and Defending Your Life don’t usually strike fear into the hearts of men. Aside from his cameo as a supervillain on "The Simpsons," he usually plays a mild-mannered guy…until now.

Behold, Albert Brooks 2.0. Now the famed comedian is 90% more menacing thanks to his upcoming role in Drive, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. In the film, Brooks will play a New York mobster named Bernie Rose who moves to L.A. to kick ass and take names. The film also stars Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan and Bryan Cranston, who has turned into a bit of a bad-ass himself thanks to "Breaking Bad."

Now that Brooks has gone tough guy, can fellow comedian and neurotic Jew Richard Lewis be far behind? Only time will tell. (Deadline)

But what’s the haunting reality?! I don’t want to ruin it for all the cry babies, but if you pay close attention to the trailer you’ll probably be able to figure it out. Mark Romanek last directed One Hour Photo, the movie that ruined my romantic relationship with my CVS photo developer, so except some trippy moments between Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, and Andrew Garfield. It would be great if the twist involved Robin Williams somehow. I don’t CARE if it’s taking liberties with the source material! Go back to Woodstock, hippie!

Never Let Me Go hits theaters October 1, 2010.
