This summer, Chris Evans will play the role of Captain America, a.k.a. Steve Rogers. And while there is no question Rogers’ status as a bona fide American hero, there is another “Rogers” who can make claim to that title. Of course I’m talking about country music legend Kenny Rogers.

Review: Captain America: The First Avenger

Captain America: The First Avenger is a fun origin story in the Spider-Man model. It’s got the heart of an underdog really experiencing the wonder of his new powers. I’m not saying it’s as good as Sam Raimi’s film, but I’ll take a solid copy of that over the likes of Thor or even the amusing Green Lantern.

The film spends a healthy first act on Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) as the digitally shrunken 90 lb. weakling. It establishes Rogers’ nobility and sincerity well so that you’re really proud of him when he becomes the super soldier, instead of resenting Evans for having such impressive abs.

'Captain America' Trailer: Still No Sympathy For Nazis

The ‘40s World War II setting does a lot to enhance the sense of wonder of a comic book movie. You really get to live in a fantasy world, with old New York City and a World’s Fair-esque Stark expo. The idea of Captain America first used as a marketing tool to sell war bonds makes the period really engaging. You get to see production numbers and the patriotism feels innocent when it’s WWII.

Supporting characters shine in this section too. Col. Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones) is hardass deadpan funny. Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) never overdoes it as a potential love interest. The movie never really allows Rogers to enjoy his new ladies man status, but at least Carter isn’t reduced to an object.

Meanwhile Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving) is so evil that the Nazis are too small time for him, so he starts his own Hydra party. Eventually we have to stop having fun so Rogers can rescue the troops Schmidt captured, expose him as Red Skull and fight bigger and badder opponents.

The action is actually not Captain America’s strong suit. A lot of it looks obviously green screen. I mean, when there are miles and miles of factory or warehouse behind them, I know they didn’t build that set. That makes a chase scene lack any feeling of distance. There are no knockdown, drag-out fights. Each confrontation has one gag that the enemy tries against Cap, and then he solves it.

It’s still fun to see the Steve Rogers we know is all heart finally get a body to match. His first foot chase through New York has the thrill of discovering his own strength, along with a few goofy jumps from car to car. A train sequence is well constructed, though still 50/50 fake looking. The montage really highlights all of Cap’s moves, and plenty of lame CG shots too, but it showcases his powers and there could be a whole other movie in those WWII missions.

I enjoyed the film overall, I’m just explaining why it’s not quite Spider-Man, or X-Men: First Class or even Iron Man. But if the fans of Iron Man can forgive a 15 minute flashback including a Powerpoint presentation of Stark family backstory, they should love Captain America equally, flaws and all.

New ‘Captain America’ Poster Gets Super Serious

Marvel has released a new poster for Captain America: The First Avenger. While it’s not as good as the fan-made poster with Captain punching Hitler IN THE FACE, I appreciate the official one’s use of lighting. Did they resurrect Norman Rockwell to do this? With a big enough budget, anything is possible. In the poster, Captain looks like he’s ready to kick some ass. There’s probably a Nazi right off screen giving him the raspberry. So disrespectful.

‘Captain America’ Sequel Already In The Works

The writing duo of Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus filled in on a screenwriters panel for the Los Angeles Film Festival’s “Coffee Talk” series. Roberto Orci had a conflict so we got the writers of Captain America: The First Avenger instead. They joined Diablo Cody, Dustin Lance Black and Josh Olson to discuss the writing industry for aspiring filmmakers and fans.

As the panel broke up into the hallway, I cornered McFeely for some follow-up questions about his big summer movie. We discussed the process of writing Captain America, and the early plans for the sequel.

Q: Since Marvel is setting up not only this franchise, but The Avengers too, what is the strangest note you got?

'Captain America' Trailer Reps The Red, White And Blue

SM: It’s not even so much we get notes based on what the next Avengers project is going to be. I would just say it’s not even notes. The world is so interesting and there’s so much of it, 70-80 years of Marvel comics, you just have conversations where an executive will say, “Have you considered Modok?” And we think to ourselves, “The guy’s a floating head? How fabulous would that be if we can do that?” The depth of the world makes for some really interesting, weird conversations. As far as a specific strangest note, I don’t think I have one because from Marvel, mostly they’re good and they end up in the movie.

Q: With the Modok conversations, at what point do they get crushed by, “No, we can’t put that in the movie?”

SM: Well, at first, “We’ll save that for Captain American 2.” We’re sort of just opening up what are all the things we could be drawing from? So things like that come up.

Q: What did you get to do that you always wanted to do?

SM: There’s a train scene that I’m really proud of. I’m really excited about that. It’s all ours.

Q: Do you get to write the post-credits tag we all know will be there?

SM: Yes, that was us. That was tough and it went through a lot of drafts obviously, but yeah.

Q: Do you worry there’s origin story fatigue, since every comic book movie is doing the origin?

SM: I think there’s no fatigue if the story’s good. I don’t think that’s why people don’t go to the movies. Either they’re not good or not successful or appreciated. It’s whether they’re good or not. It’s not whether it’s a first. So I don’t think any comic book movie would necessarily be served by writing episode two instead of episode one unless that was so much better. I don’t think there’s an origin fatigue, I don’t.

Q: When you write the Steve Rogers scenes, do they assure you they’ve got the visual effects to do it so you can just write what you want?

SM: Oh yeah. We’ve done a number of CGI movies now and you just have to rely on people who are much better at this than you are and have a lot of experience in terms of making this lion realistic or making that guy’s head really look red or making that guy look 98 lbs. And they do. They do every time. I’m always amazed.

Q: But at the screenplay stage, they don’t know how they’re going to do it. So do they just say they’ll figure it out, you go write?

SM: Yeah, not on the first draft. We don’t have to worry. In our heads, he’s 98 lbs. just as in our heads that lion can talk. In our heads, that’s Peter Sellers playing that part. We don’t have to worry about that particularly on draft one and two. Then we’ll be in the room. That’s what’s exciting on Captain America, we’re in the room all the time where we go, “All right, is it going to be a head replacement? Is it going to be a different actor? Are we going to double cast this?” All the possibilities came up and they’re really smart guys, Chris Townsend particularly, would say, “All right, here’s how the best way to do it is for these particular shots.” It’s a big deal because that’s the first act.

Q: Is Captain America the last big one who hasn’t been done yet?

SM: Good question. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of other big ones. It depends where you rank people. They haven’t done a Flash yet in DC.

Q: Well, they haven’t even done Wonder Woman yet.

SM: They haven’t done a big screen Wonder Woman so there are certainly big characters on the DC side. Marvel, not just the Marvel Studio movies but the license to other studios, they’ve been at it for a few years now. In Marvel there’s 5,000 characters so there is going to be a law of diminishing returns. Is everyone going to go to a Luke Cage movie and are you going to make it for the same amount that you made Avengers for? There’s risk vs. reward.

Q: We know he comes into modern day for The Avengers, but is there room to go back to WWII?

SM: Well, our hope is that there is room and we’re negotiating how to do that now. The story will likely be in the present day. We’re experimenting with flashback elements for more period World War II stuff. I can’t say much more than that but we made it baggy enough to refer to more stories in the past.

Q: So you left gaps in Captain America 1 where you can always say something else was going on back then?

SM: Absolutely. He had more adventures than just the one you’re going to see in the movie.

Q: Do you know who the villain of Captain America 2 would be?

SM: It’s undetermined. I will pass that question, how about that?

Q: When would you be scheduled to work on a sequel?

SM: We’ve already made the deal so I was at Marvel last week. We’re talking and passing stuff back and forth all the time. They just sent me a big PDF file of comics.

Do Video Games Based On Movies Still Suck?

Please don’t do the math, but many moons ago, I played the E.T. video game. I’m still angry about it. Heck, my dad is still angry about it and he doesn’t even play video games anymore. Games based on films have mostly been, to put it nicely, suck fests. It’s so bad that when I mention that I’m covering a film-to-game adaptation, people say things like, “All movie games are crap.” Or, “I’ll pay my rent this month instead. If I’m going to annoy my landlord, it’s going to be for Call of Duty or Halo. At least I can distract him by offering to let him play.”

I just spent three very long and brightly lit days at E3 (and a few days before that doing previews) and saw some of the latest crop of tie-ins. (Check out all of Game Front’s coverage HERE) Some were successful, some not so much. Part of the reason is what they’re basing it on. Let’s be honest…it’s really hard to milk 40+ hours of content off of a two hour story. Very often, the mistake is basing the game off the film alone. It’s what appears to be the case with the upcoming Captain America: Super Soldier. Now, I played this on two different platforms at E3, and I only played the demo they had available. I’m not saying the full game is going to be boring. I’m just saying that it appears to be a single story, set exactly when the film is set and looks to me like a generic game setting/style with characters from the film shoved in. The game play was pretty meh as well, but that is a failing any game can have. It’s also an article for another day. From what I saw, there was just nothing different about it.

Studios often think of a video game tie-in like a Happy Meal accessory. The marketing department wants this game to come out with the film and there isn’t time to make it happen with any sort of quality. This is not always the case, of course, but let’s be honest here. When was the last time you saw a film and said, “Ooh, I bet the game is going to be super duper cool, just like the movie! Let’s stop and pick it up on the way home.” Consumers are pretty savvy and we know how this all works. Tie-ins are a quick way to make a buck with recognizable characters. (Another article for another day? Why films based on games also suck. Anyone care to weigh in below? Anyone else excited/terrified about the upcoming Warcraft?)

That said, there were a few titles that stood out in the film-to-game arena. My vote on why? They didn’t stick to the script of one film. They expanded the universe or used the long history of the genre to create a playable story. A long form story. One in particular was Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 in a new story line. As far as I know, this has nothing to do with the film. A rift in time is opened by a scientist who sends Anti-Venom to heal Amazing. And healing our web-slinging friend leads to his death. The scientist has gone back in time to start his company early, creating a new, alternate time line. 2099 and Amazing have to work together to change things back to the way they were. We just saw a preview, but aren’t you already intrigued? Yes, I know Spider-Man games come out regularly, but not making this a direct story tie-in means that they’ll get mileage out of the name, get people excited to see what Spidey is doing in the upcoming film incarnation (despite it being way to early for a reboot) and have a game that doesn’t bore the spit out of me.

Same thing goes for the upcoming X-Men: Destiny. X-Men: First Class is out in theaters, and in my opinion is pretty darn fantastic. Well, except for January Jones acting like a piece of very attractive cardboard. It would have been very easy to do the latest game as a film extension. You play as a young Magneto…you fight Kevin Bacon and all the baddies in swingin’ sixties garb. The final boss? Professor X, of course. Or your own demons. You know what I mean. No, in X-Men: Destiny, we’re back in the present. Well, the future, actually. There are three brand new mutants who have to constantly decide what side they’re on, while they take on x-genes from mutants throughout the game. A scientist (again with the evil scientists) has isolated these genes, which are unique to the mutant they came from, and using them to upgrade his abilities. So here, you’re getting that battle from the film, but outside that specific story.

And then there is the holy grail of movie games, Arkham City. If you played Arkham Asylum, you know how amazing the gameplay is. But again, it’s a story outside the film…at least I assume it is. It has Catwoman as a playable character! I watched her kill someone with her thighs! (Sweet dreams tonight boys!) As we all know, Selena Kyle is in the upcoming film, The Dark Knight Rises. But this story works all on its own. Hugo Strange has stolen the cherished possessions of the denizens of Gotham away in a vault. In the level we were shown, Catwoman needs Poison Ivy’s help to get in the sewers and steals back Ivy’s precious orchid in exchange. Now, she crushes it beneath her high-heeled boots, but hey, that’s what you get for trusting a crazy cat lady. Again, this is a story that involves the greater universe, not just a two hour story stretched out far past its limits.

Now I know we’re dealing with comic book universes as well as film stories here. Those aren’t the only ones that look promising. We got a preview of Aliens: Colonial Marines as well, which didn’t rely on a film script. Now we didn’t see much here, but you start off on a ship that crashes into Hadley’s Hope. It takes place immediately after the events on LV-426…I don’t want to spoil anything here, but let’s just say that I’m going to be having nightmares about fighting off “the crusher.” The action was intense! This is being touted as a true sequel to the film Aliens. See? Beyond the film! I’m not reliving something I just watched. I’m living and gunning down xenomorphs in an expanded universe.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Do you like to replay the film or do you want to go beyond the script? Do you agree that sticking too close is part of the reason film games often fail? Feel free to expand into complaints/compliments about gameplay. I’ll be reading every single comment. And…I know this is opening a can of worms…tell everyone your vote for the worst film-to-game adaption out there. Okay, fine. You can vote for the best too.

Captain America Punches Hitler For All Of Us

We all talk about socking Adolf Hitler in the kisser, but Captain America actually does it. In this poster for Captain America: The First Avenger by artist Paolo Rivera, the superhero scores one for U.S.A. Only 100 of these cool throwback prints were given out at the Hero Complex Festival this past weekend, so you might be more likely to secure some Nazi gold. That doesn’t mean you should give up hope, though. Get out there and punch as many bigots as you come across. Chances are one of them is hiding a limited edition print under their jacket.

The upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger is coming out July 22nd, and in a novel move by the studio, posters are being released in order to promote it. These three are OK as posters go, but they’re kind of boring compared to, say, the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo poster from earlier today.

They’re character posters, featuring Captain America in one, his archenemy The Red Skull in another, and presumably Cap’s love interest Peggy Carter in the third. Enjoy, and bask in the patriotic glow of America’s Superhero and Germany‘s Nazi.

Captain America To Ditch The 1940s Sooner Than Later

We know that The Avengers movie takes place in modern times, so at some point, Captain America will have to jump from the 40s to today. When does it happen? Is a DeLorean involved? Inquiring geek minds want to know.

Alert: a spoiler approaches…

According to the above MTV interview with actor Chris Evans, by the end of Captain America: The First Avenger, he’s frozen in carbonite or goes through a time portal or something and ends up in 2011. The sequel is a “fish out of water story,” which sounds shagadellically Austin Powers-esque. Hopefully the shield can cover himself up while he tries out a Swedish Penis Enlarger.

Cap is sure to have a number of questions once he gets to our time, like “are all black people presidents,” “what do you mean nobody likes swing music anymore,” and “when can I see my life story in theaters?” I can answer the last one at least: July 22, 2011.

Nick Fury And ‘Captain America’ Invade Times Square

As it turns out, looks like that Nick Fury guy will pop up in Captain America: The First Avenger.

Though it was once believed that Samuel L. Jackson would take a breather from doing cameos in Thor and Captain America (Clark Gregg needed the work), it was decided late in the game to give him an appearance in each. This is to guarantee that potential Avengers audiences are fully aware of Fury, and to avoid a repeat of the problem you had when you went to see Iron Man 2 and your girlfriend noted at the end of the movie, “Who was that eye-patch guy?”

Anyway, check out Comic Book Movie‘s spy photo from the Times Square set that show Fury and Chris Evans meeting in modern day. Are they discussing the changes the world has seen in the past 66 years, or are they deciding if they should go to Olive Garden? TGI Friday‘s is right across the street after all.

‘Captain America’ Reshoots In The Unites States of Los Angelesia

Batman is skipping out on his regular home of Chicago for Pittsburgh, where The Dark Knight Rises will be shot. Not to be outdone, Marvel is sending Captain America to a new locale for reshoots: Los Angeles. I know, something filming in Los Angeles. Crazy.

The fact that Captain America: The First Avenger shot in the UK kinda sucks Henry Cavill-style, but at least they’re dipping their shield into a little American location pie. These probably planned reshoots are rumored to be held on Friday in downtown Los Angeles, and are going under the awesome codename “Frostbite.” True believers shoul drive around LA all day looking for the shoot, because they may include Stan Lee’s cameo. Excelsior-riffic.

Directed by Joe Johnston and starring Chris Evans, the Capt’n raises his flag in theaters July 22nd. (On Location Vacations)

‘Captain America’ Set Photos Prove Nerd Muscle Chamber Is Fake

These new photos from Paramount take us behind-the-scenes of Joe Johnston‘s Captain America: The First Avenger. Careful, Cap, cause if you’re shooting behind-the-scenes stuff, Aaron Sorkin will insist on being involved.

Here we see them filming the weakling-turns-into-buff-dude scene and the I’m-a-lady-and-don’t-want-to-sit-down-in-the-Jeep scene. The other two shots are production stills featuring Chris Evans as American Superhero Guy and Haley Atwell as Peggy Carter. I bet when these two finally hook-up, it’ll be like fireworks. Or rather, like a car exploding.

I feel like I’ve seen so many still photos from the movie that I could print them out, make a flip book of the complete film and save $37. Anyone know a printer who can do IMAX size? Speaking of ‘seen it before,’ you may see a lot of Indiana Jones influence in Captain America. Johnston addresses that in a recent interview with the LA Times. Quote below…

We used ‘Raiders’ as a template when we were developing the story, but we sort of moved away from it as time went on… This is futurism in the 1940s; if you went to 1942 and thought of what the future would be, that’s what the approach was. The villain has a much more futuristic style and his science and his apparatus — he has a whole design motif that is beyond 1942 but it’s what you might have perceived as futuristic from a 1942 vantage point… When you sit down to watch it, it’s certainly not ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark,’ which is a very different kind of film in the final analysis. But sometimes when we had questions and we were stuck we would say, ‘What would Indiana Jones do?

‘Captain America’ Trailer Preview Almost Ruined By “Entertainment Tonight”

Can’t wait for the full Captain America: The First Avenger trailer to drop? Here’s something to tide you Marvel-loving nerd soldiers over: a preview video for the trailer. That’s right, it’s a preview designed to hype an upcoming trailer. 2012 is getting closer and closer, folks.

This trailer-preview-thing for director Joe Johnston‘s Captain America comes courtesy of “Entertainment Tonight,” who got their glitziness and excessive voice over all over Cap’s shield. Disgusting. However, to quote the great Homer Simpson, “it’s still good. It’s still good.”

We’ve also got a very, very short clip from the trailer off Paramount‘s Twitter feed. If you blink and press play at the same time, you’ll miss what happens. Better get the clothespins out for those pesky eyelids. (Cinema Blend)

New ‘Captain America’ Photo Shows Why The Red Skull Is Called That

Ever since it was revealed that the villain in Captain America: The First Avenger was The Red Skull, movie fans have been asking “what? Why is he called ‘The Red Skull’?” When Hugo Weaving was cast in the part, the truth remained obscure, as Hugo Weaving’s skull is covered by flesh and hair, and it presumably is of a normal bone-white color. Now, a new photo of the character from Entertainment Weekly clears this up once and for all. He’s called The Red Skull because his face and head is a red skull.

He’s a Nazi too, although I don’t see any swastikas on his shiny leather uniform. I’m never one to complain about a lack of swastikas, though. (via /Film)

Listen up, True Believers. Our inside sources at The Daily Bugle say the villain for Joss Whedon‘s Thor or Captain America: The First Avenger.

Oh no, Marvel movie fans. It looks like Doctor Doom couldn’t wait until the summer to find out wh The Avengers will be taking on, so he broke into Marvel’s offices and stole the info, then leaked it to the internet. We don’t know 100% if this is true, but we have good reason to believe…

SPOILER ALERT. Don’t look past the ridiculous picture below if you don’t want to know who Cap and the gang are tangling with next year.

According to the internerds, The Avengers will figh Thor‘s brother Loki, who’ll be played by Tom Hiddleston in the Thor movie. Here’s more detail on how all these movies form an intricate spider-web of plot, even though that spider guy is owned by a different studio:

How does Loki fit in exactly? Well, we’d hear rumors that the Skrulls (and Loki too) would somehow fit into The Avengers and that’s apparently true. Loki, from Thor, will somehow get his hands on the Cosmic Cube, from Captain America: The First Avenger, in order to summon the Skrulls, an evil, alien race who look like reptiles but have similar several human characteristics.

Loki. Skrulls. Cubes. Finally, one film dares to incorporate all three. I hear No Strings Attached tried to in its first draft, but was significantly rewritten. (/Film, Latino Review, AICN)

The news that Marvel has commissioned a script for Captain America 2 might leave you scratching your head wondering, “shouldn’t they wait to see if the first one’s a hit?” Good thing Marvel knows you better than you know yourself. They know reaction was positive to the Super Bowl spot, that your ticket is pretty much all but bought, so it’s time to make a great sequel, then a terrible third one.

Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, writers of the upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger, directed by Joe Johnston, have been tapped to write part deux. The internet’s assuming the sequel will take place in modern day, logically after the events of The Avengers. I wish all of Marvel’s movies had “Avenger” in the title. Thor: The Avenger God, Iron Man 3: That Guy’s An Avenger Too, The Avengers The Avengers Avenge.

Super Bowl Movie Ad Bonanza: Robots And Superheroes

If you’re watching tonight’s Super Bowl, you may have noticed a few “commercial breaks,” which are interruptions in the football game designed to sell products, which in turn pays for the game’s being broadcast on television. This system of “TV advertising” has long gone both unnoticed and unremarked upon by Super Bowl viewers. During these breaks, there were several commercials advertising some big movies, including one for Cowboys & Aliens.

Anyway, here are some Super Bowl ads for Thor, Captain America, and Transformers 3. Be sure to buy lots of concessions when you go see these movies in the theater as a result of seeing them here – the studios spent a lot of money on these:

New ‘Captain America’ Poster – WWII Wasn’t All Laughs After All

Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger is quickly becoming one of most anticipated super-hero movies of the second-to-last week in July. In the hopes of stoking this anticipation into a patriotic wildfire by summer, Marvel has released a new poster for the movie. But instead of looking like a fun WWII action-adventure like Von Ryan’s Express or something, it makes WWII look like a big bummer! Good lord, it looks like Chris Evans is standing in front of a concentration camp or something. Why couldn’t they have had him punching Hitler for the poster? That’s what the people (me) want to see. Nick Fury Interested In Getting Thor And Captain America To Join His Superhero Team

So there have been some rumblings that Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury wouldn’t be appearing in the upcoming Marvel viking movie Thor. Well it turns out that was just some misdirection on the part of S.H.I.E.L.D, since according to Jackson, he IS going to be in Thor:

“In the next month or so, I have to do one day on Thor, and I gotta do another day on Captain America, and in April we start The Avengers — the big deal with everybody. Thor and Captain America are pretty much done, but I haven’t done my part in them yet. I’m just connective tissue for them to join The Avengers.”

The most interesting thing here to me is his confirmed appearance in Captain America, which as you might know is largely set in the 1940s during WWII. So I guess this means we’ll get to see at least once scene with a thawed-out Captain America chilling out in the modern day. Yeah, baby! (via SlashFilm)

The Dangers of Outsourcing America’s Superheroes

Aside from baseball, apple pie, and supporting Egyptian dictators, what’s more American than superheroes? These popular crime-fighters were invented right here in the good ol’ U.S. of A., and since their inception, they’ve continued to fight for our way of life. However, now that our way of life is under attack from radical foreigners and home-grown socialists, so too are our beloved superheroes. With the announcement of each new new superhero film I am continually infuriated by the casting decisions. Instead of opting for a talented American actor, as God himself intended, the Hollywood elite gives the role to some loathsome immigrant whose breath reeks of kidney pie or Billy tea.

Many people, including my parole officer, have called my views paranoid and misguided. But the truth is, if you’re not paranoid, you’re crazy. Besides, you’d have to be blind not to see that the very fabric of our society is being torn apart by the outsourcing of our superheroes. Don’t believe me? Take a look at the following list. Then we’ll see who’s the “xenophobic nut bag.”

The Green lantern

The Green Lantern first appeared in All-American Comics way back in 1940. The character went on to be a founding member of The Justice League of America. Well, there’s nothing American about casting a Canadian as the lead in the film adaptation, especially Ryan Reynolds. He’ll be too busy eating poutine and drinking Molson to concentrate on his work.

This role should have went to James Van Der Beek. His name sounds foreign, but he was made in the U.S.A.

Wolverine

Speaking of Canadians, Wolverine is about the only superhero I can think of who comes from the Great White North. But when it came time to cast for the film, Hollywood went with Aussie actor Hugh Jackman. I hope the people of Canada (all 500 of them) were as outraged as I was. While I’m not big fan the Canucks, or mutants, for that matter, at least they’re from this continent. That’s more than I can say for Hugh.

Canadian Brendan Fraser would have done well in the role. Very well, indeed. OK, not really, but what about Scott Speedman?

Professor X

As long as we’re on the topic of mutants, let’s talk about Professor X. Personally, I think he’s a meddlesome subversive and a fifth columnist who wants to overtake our society from within. I’d like nothing more than to see him and his kind rounded up and deported. But it’s an internal issue for us, as Americans, to decide. And we certainly don’t need any British actors like Patrick Stewart poking their noses into it.

Stanley Tucci could have easil taken on the role instead.

Batman

Although technically not a superhero, since he has no superpowers, Batman is able to keep up with his more gifted friends through sheer force of will. He’s smart, cunning, and totally self-sufficient. In short, he is the very embodiment or the rugged individualism that made this country great. That’s why it disgusts me to see an Englishman playing Bruce Wayne. But should I expect anything less when a noted limey, Christopher Nolan, is directing? Tim Burton must be rolling over in his grave.

Why not Jeremy Renner. Maybe he’s a little old, but he doesn’t sound like a pissed off cookie monster when he talks.

The Punisher

Like Batman, the Punisher doesn’t need superpowers in his bloody quest for justice. But unlike Batman, he has no qualms about blowing away criminals. After all, there’s nothing more American than killing a petty thug with a barrage of bullets. However, seeing Irish actor Ray Stevenson in the role of Frank Castle was enough to make the Statue of Liberty cry. In fact, two of the last three Punisher films have cast foreigners in the lead (Dolph Lundgren being the original). I guess The Rock was busy.

Spider-Man

Andrew Garfield, who plays Spider-Man in the upcoming reboot, is technically an American. While his father was born here, his mother was from the U.K., which makes him a dual citizen, holding both a U.S. and U.K. passport. I’m sick and tired of these English women coming to the U.S. to have anchor babies. It’s bad enough our hospitals are being overrun with Brits, but now they want to take our high-paying superhero jobs as well?

Besides, Alden Ehrenreich was the superior choice. I don’t know who he is, but I know he’s not a foreigner!

The Green Hornet

By all accounts, The Green Hornet was awful. But I’ll never know for sure, since I’m not going to pay money to see some fat, pot-smoking Canadian (Seth Rogen) tarnish another American icon. Unless they are making a movie version of “The Red Green Show,” Canadians need not apply.

Hell, Jeff Garlin would have been just as good a choice.

Thor

When it came time to cas Thor, producers set their sites on Australian actor Chris Hemsworth. While in theory, I should be upset about this, I’m actually fine with it. After all, I’d rather an American actor not take part in a film that glorifies some filthy pagan god. Best to leave that to the Aussies. Since they all descend from criminals anyway, they’ve probably already lost their souls.

Superman

Superman is the most iconic of all the superheroes. He was born on another planet, so he’s technically a foreigner. But the Man of Steel was raised in the heartland, and quickly adopted our country as his own and assimilated seamlessly into our culture. You won’t hear him going by his bizarre sounding name, Kal-El, or demanding that they speak Kryptonian at the DMV.

So why is it that when it came time to cast the man who fights for truth, justice, and the American way, Hollywood chose to go with an actor who is a known subject of the British crown, the very nation that tried to strangle our infant government in its crib. Not only that, but Henry Cavill actually plays a British nobleman in Showtime’s, “The Tudors,” a period piece that takes place before the United States was even a county. How Un-American is that?

Captain America

The last bastion of hope in the superhero pantheon is Captain America, who will be played by American actor Chris Evans in the upcoming film. Thankfully, Evens was born in Massachusetts, the very birthplace of our great nation. But if this seems too good to be true, it is. Although Cap is at least played by an American, the film is being shot in England. Yes, the movie takes place in England during World War II, but that doesn’t mean we have to film there. That’s what sets are for. I have a sneaking suspicion that the abundance of cheap labor in the form of cockney orphans had more to do with the choice than any need for realism. The Star-Spangled Avenger deserves better.

‘Spider-Man’ Swings Into Traffic While ‘Captain America’ Unleashes Blue Steel

There have been some good looks at Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man as well as Spidey doing his James Brown over the past few weeks. Now we have a look at Spider-Man in high-flying action. This spy vide taken on the film’s set shows a stunt person swinging above traffic. Many online are finding solace in the fact that this is an actual person flying through the air as opposed to a CG creation. For some reason. (via Shockya)

There’s also a new look at Captain America online via Empire. Here we see Chris Evans again. Suited up like Captain America again. Holding a shield again. That’s great. So, how’s about just showing us the trailer already?

These Trailers Will Interrupt Your Super Bowl Pee Breaks

Now that New England has been knocked out of the running, I guess the only reason I have to watch the Super Bowl is for the commercials. A lot of big films will run previews during this year’s game, so it looks like there’s something for everybody. Unless you were hoping to see mutants. Despite expectations, X-Men: First Class will not air a Super Bowl trailer.

Surprise! Joe Johnston Thinks His ‘Captain America’ Is Really Good!

Captain America: The First Avenger is going to be one of 2011′s biggest blockbusters. Or at least it will be if Joe Johnston knows what he’s talking about after seeing the first cut of his movie. He recently watched it for the first time and according to an interview with the LA Times he was, shockingly, quite pleased with what he saw:

“I watched the movie for the first time a few days ago and I just looked at the first cut and there is so much entertainment value — it’s just flat-out fun to watch. Maybe I’m somewhat biased — I was there [when we made it] — but, seriously, it’s funny, it’s exciting and there’s great visual effects. The movie is going to be something more than people are expecting. This movie is going to surprise some people. It is the origin story of Captain America but it is also something rare — it’s a period superhero film but there’s great action in it. You don’t normally think of guys driving around in 1939 sedans in an action film but there are some great action beats in it. It’s just a helluva lot of fun to watch.”

Listen everybody, please don’t tell Joe Johnston about Raiders of the Lost Ark. The fact that someone else had the idea 30 years before he did to set an action movie in a time other than the present coul break his heart.

Red Skull In ‘Captain America’ Looks Like Constipated Devil?

Pics are flying out of the Captain America: The First Avenger cam faster than a deadly frisbee shield. However, this one isn’t an official leak. A website began selling Captain America movie Halloween costumes, which gives us an underwhelming (read: really shitty) first look at Cap’s nemesis Red Skull in full bad-suntan mode, portrayed in the upcoming film by Hugo Weaving. He looks like a ‘pumped’ New Jersey Devils fan or an angry, grown up “Inside Out Boy” from old school Nickelodeon.

Perhaps it’s unfair to judge a character’s look by its mass-market Halloween costume spin-off. This one doesn’t do Edward Cullen any favors. Unfortunately, this Red Skull isn’t the first laughable image of Captain America we’ve seen. If more images like these get hoisted up the flag pole, I don’t think too many people are gonna be saluting. (Collider)

As was done by Delirious-era Eddie Murphy before him, Chris Evans‘s Captain America is intent on showing the world how comfortable and mobile a leather bodysuit truly is. Here Cap glides effortlessly along the catwalk of a military base as he races to the men’s room. Will he make it back before his favorite show returns from commercial? Well, I’m not going to spoil it for you. You’ll have to buy a ticket this summer if you want to find out, friend.

It should be noted that while flexible enough for a full range of movements, leather doesn’t breathe that well. That’s why Captain America recommends carrying some Gold Bond Powder in your little brown utility belt. Gold Bond: Because when you’re protecting the free world from the red skeleton of a Nazi, you can’t let moisture stand in the way. (LA Times)

‘X-Men: First Class’ Trailer Will Tide Us Over Until Delayed ‘Captain America’

UPDATE: The X-Men trailer will not screen before The Green Hornet. Fox hasn’t decided on a roll-out date just yet. In time, my pretties. In time.

Last week “Entertainment Tonight” teased their exclusive first look at Captain America: The First Avenger. And then nothing. Well, where the hell is it? You can’t just give us four seconds and no pay-off. Are you trying to make us sympathize with our prom dates?

Word on the street is that the footage isn’t up to par yet. Whatever. I’m holding Billy Bush personally accountable.

The rumor began via a tweet from branding consultant Gregory Littley. He tweeted:

“Not good news…I’m hearing that the ‘Captain America: The First Avenger‘ trailer is being delayed. Footage isn’t ‘Amazing’.”

This shouldn’t cause too much alarm in the fan community just yet. After the negative response to the Thor footage leak, Marvel and Joe Johnston want to make sure they only share the best look possible. Especially with The Avengers partially riding on this. Whatever. I still choose to hold Billy Bush personally accountable. You’ll pay for this Billy!

Luckily, we won’t have that same problem with x-Men: First Class. That trailer is slated to arrive this Friday in front of Green Hornet. (via Movie Web and /Film)

Peep Red Skull and Cosmic Cube from ‘Captain America’

Super-heroes tend to be a package deal – you don’t just get Batman, but also Robin, a utility belt, and an acrobat wearing uncomfortably small shorts. It’s the same with one of 2011′s most anticipated big screen superheroes, Captain America: The First Avenger. Some new images have dropped onto the internet recently, one of the all-powerful Cosmic Cube (not available in stores), and Captain America‘s archenemy, the undateable Red Skull. The Red Skull’s concept art can be found below, and it’s no surprise to anyone familiar with the character. Pretty standard red-skeleton-who-is-also-a-Nazi stuff here, which is admittedly really cool. Pictured above is an actual photo of the Cosmic Cube being handled by Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull’s alter-ego, presumably just before coming down with one of the worst skin conditions in modern history. The photo is interesting, although it’s safe to assume that in the actual movie there will be a lot of fancy post-production effects used in order to achieve that special “reality-warping feeling.” No new pics of Chris Evans as Cap, but it’s also safe to assume that we will eventually be seeing pictures of Captain America’s iconic star-and-stripe adorned shield, preferably bouncing off of Hitler’s face.

First Look At ‘Captain America’s’ First Look

“Entertainment Tonight” is sitting on an exclusive sneak peek of Captain America: The First Avenger. Here they give us the quickest glimpse of what Chris Evans looks like in a helmet while all the other soldiers wear cotton hats. That’s why he gets to be Captain. He’s the only one who thought to bring a helmet.

Again, this is a really short video so there is unfortunately no information whether Evans worked out for the role or not. But that’s okay. We’ll sure to find out the answer to that riveting question (and possibly plot details) when “ET” airs its full exclusive. (Comic Book Movie)
