Waiting sucks.

We all got pretty excited or angry or sad or confused when it was announced that FX was filming a pilot based on Brian Michael Bendis‘s comic series Powers. We watched closely and commented as castings and shoot dates were announced, eager for the official word that the show would soon take over our airwaves. And then… nothing.

It went away as quickly as it came together. The pilot was actually filmed with Jason Patric, Lucy Punch, and Charles S. Dutton but FX head John Landgraf rejected the pilot without the news making a lot of noise. Today we find out that FX isn’t done trying to get this show together. In fact, they’re hoping to move forward by filming a completely new pilot with a brand new cast. Which means we might have ample opportunity to once again get excited or angry or sad or confused.

Anyway, why wouldn’t this show be delayed? It is based on Powers after all. (Variety)

7 photosKatie Aselton

Lucy Punch has been selected to play the female lead, Deena Pilgrim, in the FX drama pilot “Powers” despite the fact that Katee Sackhoff exists. Pilgrim is a tough-as-nails rookie on a police task force that investigates crimes committed by and/or against “Powers” aka “super-powered individuals.”

She joins the previously cast Charles S. Dutton, who will be portraying Captain Cross. The role of Deena Pilgrim’s partner, the gruff veteran Christian Walker has yet to be cast but an offer has gone out to Super 8‘s Kyle Chandler, who is still considered a long shot. If the show is anything like the graphic novel series on which it is based, we’re in for some awesome television. PLEASE let this be awesome. (Deadline)

Charles S. Dutton ("Roc," "House") will star as Captain Cross, Head of the Department. In my book, he'll always be Head of the "Roc" Department.

Comic book movies have taken over the theaters, so why can’t comic book-y TV shows take over the cable tubes? One problem is that most of them are terrible. “Heroes,” “The Cape,” “No Ordinary Family,” probably “Wonder Woman,” and the awful list continues. However, I’m optimistic about the FX pilot “Powers.” Like the hit show”The Walking Dead,” it’s based on a beloved series from Image Comics. “Powers” has also gotten off on the right casting foot.

Brian Michael Bendis‘ series focuses around a police department investigating murders related to “powers,” or people with superpowers, who are commonplace in their world. Charles S. Dutton (“Roc,” “House”) will star as Captain Cross, Head of the Department. He’s a strong, magnetic actor who I don’t see enough of. Sometimes I’ll be eating breakfast, or taking a jog, and I’ll say to myself, “hey… Charles S. Dutton.” At which point, I’ll go on YouTube and watch his episode of “Are You Afraid Of The Dark?” Cutter’s Treasure, you guys.

The “Powers” pilot will be directed by Michael Dinner, and adapted by Charles H. Eglee. (Hollywood Reporter)

It’s a “superhero detective” story that deals with “a homicide department devoted to cases that involve superheroes.” I’m not familiar with the comic, but it reminds me of two comics by Alan Moore – “Top 10″ and “Watchmen,” the latter having already been adapted for the screen by Zack Snyder. And “Powers” has had a very long run of more than 10 years, so there’s plenty of fodder for plotlines if the pilot gets picked up as a series.

The news came from Bendis’ Twitter, on which he posted: “Powers pilot was just greenlit by FX. It’s official! Your window of reading Powers while it was still cool is running out.” Damn it, Bendis, I was going to make that joke.
There's been a few new developments with the Spider-Man reboot that may have a positive effect on the unnecessary reboot. We already know that director Marc Webb recently met with James "Piss in the Soup" Cameron, but now there's word that he's met with another heavy hitter. Comics demi-god Brian Michael Bendis tweeted yesterday that he and the filmmakers had a meeting at Sony. He went on to comment, "very, very cool stuff!!"Bendis should know what is and isn't cool in the world of superheroics. He's written many of the best comics out there, including Ultimate Spider-Man, and has won five Eisner Awards. There's no word if Bendis will re-write the script or consult with story changes but the fact that they even met is a step in the right direction. My nerd boner is 19% chubby as of right now. But it could be easily deflated depending on what little f*cktard nabs the role of Peter Parker. (Bendis Twitter)
