One of the most stylized, exciting, and cinematic comic books of all time, Powers, has finally been adapted for the screen. And it looks like a web series. In hindsight, maybe it was a bad idea for a fledgling network to leave the gate with an ambitious, sprawling story that requires pretty involved special effects.

Sony PlayStation has released the trailer for their kick-off series starring Sharlto Copley and, wow, it’s underwhelming. The series focuses on homicide detectives who solve the murders of individuals with super powers, and also slowly reveals that there may be more to these detectives than meets the eye. But why wrap viewers up in a mystery with a fun pay off when you can just blurt it out in the trailer?

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Powers has fought such an uphill battle. They have a hard enough time releasing issues of the comic. Imagine having to wait a year and a half just for your storyboards?

We all got pretty excited or angry or sad or confused when it was announced that FX was filming a pilot based on Brian Michael Bendis‘s comic series Powers. We watched closely and commented as castings and shoot dates were announced, eager for the official word that the show would soon take over our airwaves. And then… nothing.

It went away as quickly as it came together. The pilot was actually filmed with Jason Patric, Lucy Punch, and Charles S. Dutton but FX head John Landgraf rejected the pilot without the news making a lot of noise. Today we find out that FX isn’t done trying to get this show together. In fact, they’re hoping to move forward by filming a completely new pilot with a brand new cast. Which means we might have ample opportunity to once again get excited or angry or sad or confused.

Anyway, why wouldn’t this show be delayed? It is based on Powers after all. (Variety)

Good news! That T-Mobile girl that’s on television every other minute may now be on television even more. Carly Foulkes has been cast as Retro Girl in FX’s superhero crime pilot, Powers. The young actress joins Jason Patric and Lucy Punch in the detective series based on the comic of the same name which centers around the mysterious murder of Retro Girl.

Chief suspect: Catherine Zeta-Jones. (Super Hero Hype)

Lucy Punch Suits Up For ‘Powers’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/lucy-punch-suits-up-for-powers/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/lucy-punch-suits-up-for-powers/#comments Mon, 20 Jun 2011 21:54:59 +0000 Wookie Johnson http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=216971 She'll play Deena Pilgrim. Katee Sackhoff, somehow, will not.

Lucy Punch has been selected to play the female lead, Deena Pilgrim, in the FX drama pilot “Powers” despite the fact that Katee Sackhoff exists. Pilgrim is a tough-as-nails rookie on a police task force that investigates crimes committed by and/or against “Powers” aka “super-powered individuals.”

She joins the previously cast Charles S. Dutton, who will be portraying Captain Cross. The role of Deena Pilgrim’s partner, the gruff veteran Christian Walker has yet to be cast but an offer has gone out to Super 8‘s Kyle Chandler, who is still considered a long shot. If the show is anything like the graphic novel series on which it is based, we’re in for some awesome television. PLEASE let this be awesome. (Deadline)

Comic book movies have taken over the theaters, so why can’t comic book-y TV shows take over the cable tubes? One problem is that most of them are terrible. “Heroes,” “The Cape,” “No Ordinary Family,” probably “Wonder Woman,” and the awful list continues. However, I’m optimistic about the FX pilot “Powers.” Like the hit show”The Walking Dead,” it’s based on a beloved series from Image Comics. “Powers” has also gotten off on the right casting foot.

Brian Michael Bendis‘ series focuses around a police department investigating murders related to “powers,” or people with superpowers, who are commonplace in their world. Charles S. Dutton (“Roc,” “House”) will star as Captain Cross, Head of the Department. He’s a strong, magnetic actor who I don’t see enough of. Sometimes I’ll be eating breakfast, or taking a jog, and I’ll say to myself, “hey… Charles S. Dutton.” At which point, I’ll go on YouTube and watch his episode of “Are You Afraid Of The Dark?” Cutter’s Treasure, you guys.

The “Powers” pilot will be directed by Michael Dinner, and adapted by Charles H. Eglee. (Hollywood Reporter)

The broadcasters of quality programming like”Justified,” “Archer,” “Louie,” and reruns of “Two and a Half Men” at FX have just given the green light to another possible series: A pilot based on “Powers,” the comic by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. It’s a “superhero detective” story that deals with “a homicide department devoted to cases that involve superheroes.” I’m not familiar with the comic, but it reminds me of two comics by Alan Moore – “Top 10″ and “Watchmen,” the latter having already been adapted for the screen by Zack Snyder. And “Powers” has had a very long run of more than 10 years, so there’s plenty of fodder for plotlines if the pilot gets picked up as a series.

The news came from Bendis’ Twitter, on which he posted: “Powers pilot was just greenlit by FX. It’s official! Your window of reading Powers while it was still cool is running out.” Damn it, Bendis, I was going to make that joke. (via The Hollywood Reporter)

Good News For Sony’s ‘Spider-Man’ Reboot http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/good-news-for-sonys-spider-man-reboot/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/good-news-for-sonys-spider-man-reboot/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 There's been a few new developments with the Spider-Man reboot that may have a positive effect on the unnecessary reboot. We already know that director Marc Webb recently met with James "Piss in the Soup" Cameron, but now there's word that he's met with another heavy hitter. Comics demi-god Brian Michael Bendis tweeted yesterday that he and the filmmakers had a meeting at Sony. He went on to comment, "very, very cool stuff!!"Bendis should know what is and isn't cool in the world of superheroics. He's written many of the best comics out there, including Ultimate Spider-Man, and has won five Eisner Awards. There's no word if Bendis will re-write the script or consult with story changes but the fact that they even met is a step in the right direction. My nerd boner is 19% chubby as of right now. But it could be easily deflated depending on what little f*cktard nabs the role of Peter Parker. (Bendis Twitter)

The point of this article is that the High School Musical, Me and Orson Welles star is trying the action genre on for size.In Fire, Efron plays a college student recruited by the CIA to work as an assassin around the world. Things get complicated when he learns that NAMBLA has set their sights on him he himself may be targeted for assassination. That's an intriguing premise and Brian Michael Bendis, the writer, has a sharp style so let's hope this will be more Bourne and less Agent Cody Banks. We won't know for sure until we can safely say that Corbin Bleu has been barred from the set. (Deadline Hollywood)
