Over the weekend, Katniss and Co. showed up in San Diego at a little thing called Comic-Con to share with 6,000 of their nearest and dearest fans the first trailer for Catching Fire, the Hunger Games sequel due out November 22nd.

Rather than recap the trailer that you can just as easily watch, let’s discuss Jennifer Lwarence’s training for the film as she spoke about it on the panel. She said, “the hardest stunt is probably still just basic running.”

Hmm. That seems counterintuitive. Go on, Jennifer.

“Running and trying not to hit myself in the face with my bow, those were my two greatest challenges,” adding that she runs “weird” and had to hire a running coach.

What’s really odd about this statement is that she won an Oscar for a film in which half her screen time seemed to be following her as she ran around the neighborhood. I guess they weren’t looking for Oscar-caliber jogging in this film, but perhaps some sort of trot that resonates better with middle America and tweens.

With stuff like The Avengers making enough money to choke a [OBSCURE MARVEL COMICS REFERENCE], it’s a little bit of a puzzler that the people at DC Comics and Warner Brothers haven’t already jumped on the team-up bandwagon. But according to the recent news from Comic-Con, the sequel to Man of Steel will be a Superman-meets-Batman movie.

The superhero Odd Couple will be directed by Man of Steel‘s Zack Snyder, and Henry Cavill will return as Superman. No word yet on who will play Batman, but since this is the internet I’ll indulge in a little baseless speculation: Batman will be played by former James Bond George Lazenby.

Say what you will about AMC’s The Walking Dead but it’s just so damn good at reviving itself. The show where nobody is safe (showrunners included) is back with a fourth season and Scott Gimple newly appointed to pull the strings. The Gimple-penned episodes from last season were easily the standouts and if this trailer is any indication, he was just getting started.

The trailer that premiered today at Comic-Con sees the prison crew acclimating to life with the Woodbury survivors. More importantly, they have to find a way to protect themselves when it’s discovered there’s a traitor in their midst. Just when I’d written the show off they go and get awesome again.

Nick Frost, Simon Pegg, and Edgar Wright have served as the sort of Scorsese-DiCaprio synergy for the intellectual schlubs. With that kind of demographic, one best believe that the audiences at Comic-Con were wondering if the trio would be parting ways, having knocked out their third film together, following Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead.

Breathe easy, nerds. After The World’s End premieres on August 23rd, the gang plans on getting back together to do “whatever they want.” Must be nice.

Anyway, Edgar Wright films starring Frost and Pegg have become something of an intermittent treat, along the lines of a free Girl Talk album. They may not change the world, but they’re enjoyable on a level that’s sublime in a way that most stuff just isn’t.

So good news from that front. Updates to continue…

Though Dexter has the better part of a season left, they’re not exactly shooting the show live, so their Comic-Con panel today may have been one of the last opportunities for all the principals (even a taped statement from John Lithgow!), so they made the most of the emotional moment.

The panel was a mix of sincerity and humor from the whole crew, but most notably Dexter himself.

Michael C. Hall spoke to how he has more trouble getting out of character than into character, which is an icy statement if you really think about it. I guess Hall thought about it, because he punctuated the statement with a joke, saying “I do everything Dexter does — but then I just tickle the person.”

Comic-Con used to be about the comics. Then it became about the movies. Now it’s just a glorified parade of 400-lb. walking robots. Buncha sell outs these days.

Wired magazine asked the Stan Winston School and Legacy Effects, the braintrusts behind Pacific Rim and Iron Man, to build them a damn robot. A huge one. And those tasked with the effort did a pretty damn good job, creating this ED-209 (Robocop) lookalike that was able to mirror the smallest of movements performed by whoever was manning the controls.

The post Comic-Con 2013 Kicks Off With A No-Show From ‘Intelligence’ Showrunner appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
Comic-Con officially kicks off today, though it didn’t have the start that anyone had hoped. At the panel and preview for Intelligence, a spy show on CBS starring Josh Holloway and others, showrunner Rene Ehcevarria failed to show up. Possibly due to a gross misspelling of the showrunner’s name on his placard, possibly because of a traffic jam resulting from a jacknifed surfboard on the 5.

Occam’s Razor suggests that Rene got really, really drunk last night and figured that old people don’t own remotes and pretty much leave their TVs on CBS all day, so what’s the point of hurting one’s self with marketing to youngsters?

From the Deadline synopsis, the show sounds VERY CBS-y:

The show started with Holloway sneaking up on a satellite dish in the Himalayas to mentally tap into data and depictions of a terrorist attack and then being taken captive in a Pakistani military base – which of course he escaped from. It then shifted to Cyber Command where CSI alumni Helgenberger, who was walking around the Con yesterday, was introduced as Cyber Command director Lillian Stand. Once Upon A Time regular Ory plays Riley O’Neil, a Presidential detail Secret Service Agent assigned to protest the Gabriel character.

Legendary Pictures has a Godzilla film coming out in May of 2014, so when the Godzilla Encounter popped up in the Gaslamp District of San Diego during Comic-Con, no one really thought it was just a nice gesture.

It’s marketing. Fun, delicious, delightful marketing.

So if you’re in San Diego, and find yourself wandering around the Gaslamp District, feel free to stick your head in to check out the graffitti, wreckage, and displays walking through the history of the Godzilla film saga.

But for God’s sake, just don’t piss that monster off. I’ve seen it take out bigger towns than San Diego just for the fun of it.

All You Need Is Kill couldn’t just wait around until Saturday to make all of their Comic-Con revelations. The Tom Cruise sci-fi flick has announced both a title change and debuted its first poster. Going forward, please refer to the film by the much more vanilla yet still totally meaningless Edge of Tomorrow.

Granted All You Need Is Kill is the movie title equivalent to “All Your Base Are Belong To Us,” but Edge of Tomorrow is so whatever. Sounds like the title of a Jon Bon Jovi song. But not even from his good era, a 1990′s Bon Jovi song.

Anyway, that shouldn’t diminish the awesome concept of the film. Tom Cruise wears mech suits and gets caught in a time loop while fighting aliens and Emily Blunt is there. Here’s the poster:
