Meanwhile, real-life witch Gwyneth Paltrow proved that having a terrible title like Country Strong isn’t enough to kill a movie’s financial potential, since a movie with that very (and very terrible) title managed to perform pretty respectably, with a $7.3 million dollar weekend in limited release.

In movies-your-parents-don’t-want-to-see news, the season’s surprise indie hits The King’s Speech Black Swan, and Blue Valentine continued to do very well, with Blue Valentine scoring the highest per-screen average gross of $18,000 per screen. Perhaps a TV sitcom adaptation is in the works?

Congratulations, kids! We did it! Toy Story 3, one the best animated, and live-action, movies of these past few years has become the highest grossing animated film of all time. The film has brought in more than $920 million worldwide, surpassing Dreamworks Animation‘s Shrek 2 ($919.8 million worldwide) for the title. All I can say is, daaaaaaaamn, that’s a lot of cheddar in Woody and Buzz’s pocket.

/Film points out that the price of 3D tickets must also be considered when comparing these box office numbers. Shrek 2 didn’t have the benefit of charging theater patrons $20 a pop to see more stuff jump out at them. A film like The Lion King made $783.8 million worldwide in 1994, a number which would be adjusted to $1.54 billion today. Daaaaaamn, that’s a lot of cheddar in Mufasa’s pocket. Oh wait, he died in the film. RETROACTIVE SPOILER ALERT!

Bad news for MacGruber and Co. Despite a relentless Internet marketing campaign and surprisingly positive reviews (relatively speaking), the film has completely tanked at the box office.

The Village Voice is reporting that the SNL spin off pulled in a paltry $4.1 million over the weekend, included a disastrous $1.5 million from its opening night. Even with a budget of only $10 million, the results are disappointing. And the worst part of it all is that MacGruber‘s failure has basically killed any chance of me selling my Goat Boy spec script. Screw you, Will Forte! You’ve crushed my dreams, yet again! (Box Office Mojo)

UPDATE: The final figures are in and Kick-Ass took the top spot with $19,828,687. How to Train Your Dragon came in at number two with $19,633,320. Still read the post though. I spent at least twenty minutes on it.

Kick-Ass has some explaining to do after coming on hot and then underperforming in the weekend box-office sack. Sucks to be you, bro! Haha. That NEVER happens to me. Shut up. My eyes always well during allergy season.

But did it really lose?

Speculation was that it would earn at least $30 million so if you wanna be a dick about it, yes. As of today it holds the number two spot behind How to Train Your Dragon (final calculations come in tomorrow), trailing by $250k. But bear in mind that Dragon is a 3D movie for children. Kids movies always pack them in and when you factor in the higher cost of 3D tickets, it’s no surprise that it raked in more cash. Adjust for that info, and the R-rated, non-3D Kick-Ass probably brought in a larger audience. I’d calculate all this info myself but the F12 button is all the way over there and it’s time to go eat a sandwich. So in conclusion, just sayin’. (BoxOfficeMojo)

Michael Jackson’s concert film This Is It predictably toppe the box office this weekend given that it had zero competition. However the $20mil domestic take was lower than expected. The low number has prompted nervous filmmakers to expand the film’s two week limited run until past Thanksgiving. You see? This is what happens when your star refuses to promote the film in any way, shape, or form. (Reuters)
