The universe can't just offer this, then take it away. This must happen.

Kanye West totally went all Kanye West on us last night, luaunching a four-hour Twitter rant that was as batshit crazy as the man himself. As is so often the case, his musings mostly defy commentary or explanation, so feel free to peruse them yourself right here. Open your mind, man.

However, one nugget he let slip that does lend itself to a fair amount of scrutiny is his offhand comment that he is in talks to become Creative Director of the Jetsons movie. Yup.

I didn’t know there was going to be a Jetsons movie. Should there be, and should Kanye West become a part of it, I’m going to go ahead and jot it down as my “most anticipated movie of any future year, ever.” And here’s why:

I’m not really going out on a limb by saying that Kanye West is a delusional, egocentric ass. That’s more or less irrefutable. But when he tackles an ambitious project, like 2010’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, he goes off the rails in a fascinating, spectacular, and “successful” manner. Same goes for his 2011 Coachella live show which went on for almost two hours and featured ballet dancers, fireworks, an arrival from the heavens, as well as a “Chariots of Fire” interlude that featured flowing silk sheets about the size of a football field.

The man has a vision. And, if Hollywood is going to ooze out a Jetsons movie, this vision will prove integral to ensure we end up with something more than Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties, The Smurfs, The Flintstones, Alvin and the Chipmunks, etc. You get the idea.

I don’t know what a Creative Director does on a movie, but there’s no doubt that if Kanye is offered and takes the gig, we’ll be privy to one more of his beautiful dark twisted fantasies. And that’s pretty exciting.

Here’s what to look for in the Jetsons movie should Yeezy get his crazy, crazy hands on it.

Kanye’s Vision of the Future

You and I can’t even imagine what Kanye thinks the future is like. It’s like trying to imagine a totally new color. A guess – modified winged komodo dragons have replaced cars, everyone is a mixed race that sorta resembles Eskimos (excuse me, Inuits). People might subsist on a fortified gruel known as “Love Dough,” and Bill Clinton is on the face of every coin.

Kanye Makes The Movie About Him

It is absolutely impossible that Kanye could get involved with the Jetsons and not turn it into some sort of twisted Kanye West biopic. My guess? Kanye West will make his feature debut Little Man-style with his face superimposed on a CGI Elroy. Who will provide the mo-cap work for Elroy’s CGI body? Stop asking stupid f*cking questions. Andy Serkis.

Jay-Z WILL Be Mr. Spacely and Will Ferrell WILL Be George Jetson

I know this in my heart of hearts to be true.

The director asked a lot of his stars in an effort to capture realism in his naturalistic study of a marriage falling apart. Cianfrance had Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling move in to the house where the film was shot for one month. To make matters creepier, they were also ordered to take care of their on-screen daughter. But it didn’t stop there.

In a move that sounds like something out of Pacey’s playbook, the director one night told Gosling to go into Williams’ bedroom and try to have sex with her. Gosling refused and slept on the couch. Thus, costing Popeater one article.

This plan was stupid from the outset. If it was realism that Cianfrance wanted, he got it. Married couples don’t have sex. (Huffington Post)

As all box-office prognosticators know, the weekend after New Year’s represents a traditional slump in box office returns, as the general public becomes numb with the crushing oppressiveness of another unrelenting year of births, deaths, and having to buy new shoes. And while I’d love to report that Nicolas Cage single-handedly saved the world’s population from the box office doldrums, the more accurate truth is that he merely contributed to them. His Serious Witchcraft picture Season of the Witch only earned $10.7 million – a paltry sum low enough to make even a warlock blush, and which was only good enough for 3rd place over the weekend behind two movies in their 3rd weeks (Jeff Bridges’ eyepatch in True Grit and Robert De Niro’s boner in Little Fockers).

Meanwhile, real-life witch Gwyneth Paltrow proved that having a terrible title like Country Strong isn’t enough to kill a movie’s financial potential, since a movie with that very (and very terrible) title managed to perform pretty respectably, with a $7.3 million dollar weekend in limited release.

In movies-your-parents-don’t-want-to-see news, the season’s surprise indie hits The King’s Speech Black Swan, and Blue Valentine continued to do very well, with Blue Valentine scoring the highest per-screen average gross of $18,000 per screen. Perhaps a TV sitcom adaptation is in the works?

Blue Valentine is like (500) Days of Summer for the people who ended up marrying Summer. And Summer’s the guy in this.

Blue Valentine is like (500) Days of Summer for the people who ended up marrying Summer. And Summer’s the guy in this. It’s a risk to tell the story out of order, not a narrative risk but a risk of being lame. So many movies do it cheaply. I don’t think Blue Valentine breaks any new ground but it’s one of the good ones. It at least knows how to position scenes for context and impact, and doesn’t push it into pretentious realms.

Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams) are a married couple with a daughter. As the scenes unfold, we get to see how characters in their lives played unexpected roles in their relationship, and how circumstances had surprising effects on their outcome. I think Cindy’s the one deluding herself that Dean is a good match, which is why I say he’s the Summer in that comparison.

The film conveys that awkward pressure of talking. Just filling the silence leads to trouble, and haven’t we all been there? Cindy mentions running into Bobby (Mike Vogel) and there’s nothing she can say that doesn’t sound threatening to Dean. Later in the movie you see how Bobby assaulted Dean, and how Dean supported Cindy in the aftermath of that relationship. So maybe he has a reason to freak out about Bobby.

Cindy tries to encourage Dean to be more than a house painter, but it only sounds like criticism to Dean. Dean asks Cindy to come away with him but he can’t see he’s being a needy burden. It’s fascinating to see these conversations devolve. Sad, but maybe there’s a good lesson for viewers.

Considering the ratings issues, the sex scenes are rather conservative. In one, Cindy keeps her shirt on and her former lover Bobby keeps his pants on. However, the sound in that scene is more explicit than any visual. There is a shower scene, but I think it’s the central sex scene between Cindy and Dean that got Blue Valentine the rating.

We know the MPAA allows a certain number of thrusts in an R-rated sex scene, and you know what? The MPAA is right. This many thrusts makes the scene way more intimate than a quick shot of a couple in action. We can recognize the intensity of this act and it feels a little dirty watching something so intimate.

There’s an abortion scene that will actually be more upsetting than the sex. That’s good though. It’s healthy to portray a sensitive subject in an intimate manner so people can deal with it.

Williams is the standout performance here. Gosling gets the showy role because Dean is the one who freaks out several times. We know Gosling can do that but Williams conveys all of Cindy’s frustration with subtlety that feels real and doesn’t feel like mugging for an Oscar clip.

This may sound like a downer, but it’s a healthy downer. You can appreciate the drama and feel a catharsis without having to share the actual misery. You’ll like this couple so you’ll want to see what they’ve been through, on both sides.

Those zan Brothers Weinstein have dropped the trailer for Blue Valentine. Awww, it looks sweet, but also equally heartbreaking. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams play a couple going through the ups and downs of a relationship full of kisses and hugs that turn into tears and shoves.

I didn’t get the opportunity to see this film at Sundance but I hear it’s impressive and moving from an acting standpoint. Hell, Ryan Gosling made me feel sorry for a sex doll in Lars and the Real Girl so he’s probably even better with a girl with a pulse. Furthermore, the MPAA just slapped the film with a NC-17 rating. I can only imagine it was for “sexual situations” but could it possibly be worse than Boogie Nights? Dude pulls his wee wee out at the end of that.

Blue Valentine hopefully runs in theaters December 26, 2010.
