Jay-Z and Beyonce, despite rumors that their marriage is just a showbusiness arrangement at this point (NO!), have been touring around all summer on the husband/wife On the Run tour, which will air on HBO later this month. Because Jay and Bey don’t do things small, they had a short film introduction before they took the stage. And it was…something.

It’s a very cinematic, stylized piece that takes from the French and Sergio Leone more than it does any hip-hop influences. The whole thing sort of reads like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, but with more Tarantino hallmarks in it. Better you watch it than listen to me go on about it.

Should you be hungry for more, take solace in knowing that this is just the first installment. More will follow. Maybe with a Wes Craven or Nicholas Sparks feel to them.

MTV Is Still Doing Those Damn VMAs, So I Guess Here Are The Nominees. Yes, yes, MTV doesn’t play videos any more so the whole premise of the awards show is irrelevant. We’ve been saying that for about 12 years now, to the point that the criticism itself may be more obnoxious than the very thing it’s criticizing.

Nah. The thing it’s criticizing is still worse. Nonetheless, I guess MTV makes some money off these things, or maybe Hannah Montana is paying for them out of pocket, but there will be Video Music Awards on August 24th.

To the show’s credit, some decent acts are up for awards, but those were probably hand picked to get a broader audience so that more people can watch Iggy Azalea fuck a goat, or whatever contrived controversy that manifests itself during MTV’s wrap-up show.

Beyonce leads with eight nods because…she fierce! Eminem is up for seven because he slightly less fierce. Also, a lot of people probably thought he was dead or retired, but here he is, getting MTV VMA Ns (I decided to shorten “Nominations” so that the phrase is nothing but acronyms. I’m a completist.) Iggy Azalea also got seven Ns as well, but that’s far less surprising, because a white person appropriating black culture is always good for commercial and critical success. Just ask…I don’t know…oh! Eminem.

If you’re of a Pitchfork type of guy or gal, you can hang your hat on Ns for Kanye West, Arcade Fire, Drake, Arctic Monkeys, the Black Keys, Sia, Lorde, Jack White, Ariana Grande, Charli XCX, Schoolboy Q, Disclosure, Angel Haze, Lana Del Rey, Gesaffelstein, MGMT, and Tyler, the Creator.

Can we please just call him “Tyler” now? The only thing more annoying than typing “Tyler, the Creator” is having to add that little comma-pause in there when you say his name.

And Drake will be there. Because it’s legally not an award show unless Drake or Neil Patrick Harris are in attendance.

Remember: VMAs, August 24th. Be there or…be somewhere else. It just doesn’t matter anymore.

Move Over, Jackman: Leo DiCaprio To Join ‘A Star Is Born’? http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/move-over-jackman-leo-dicaprio-to-join-a-star-is-born/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/move-over-jackman-leo-dicaprio-to-join-a-star-is-born/#comments Mon, 27 Jun 2011 21:07:12 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=218073 Will Leo be able to brood while performing "jazz hands?"

It’s becoming pretty clear that Leonardo DiCaprio is a serial monogamist when it comes to directors, though he di break the chains of love to work with Chris Nolan on Inception.

While filming J. Edgar with director Clint Eastwood, there is word that Clint is sweet-talking Leo into joining the cast of A Star Is Born, Eastwood’s next directing gig. This would be a big change for DiCaprio, who has made a blockbuster career out of playing intense, brooding characters, the type you normally don’t find in musical remakes.

If Leo joins the film, there is little question he would play the lead, a has-been star performer who takes an up-and-comer (Beyonce) under his wing, only to fall in love with her.

With J. Edgar still shooting, the casting decisions here aren’t terribly pressing, but it’s a safe bet that Eastwood would like to lock down DiCaprio before they go their separate ways after filming ends.

This project is getting weird so gradually, it’s almost hard to notice. (Deadline)

A fourth film version of A Star Is Born has been announced, and the players involved run from the obvious to the totally, mind-blowingly surprising. The female lead has been announced as Mrs. Jay-Z herself, Beyonce, which should surprise no one. Given her vocal stylings and her pedigree for musical performance on the big screen in Dreamgirls, she’s an accesible, talented selection.

The announcement as Clint Eastwood as director of the musical is borderling jaw-dropping. He had earlier expressed an interest in working with more female-driven stories, but to do so in this capacity is shocking. He has proven capable of tackling most any genre in the book, but when examining the trio “Clint Eastwood, Beyonce, musical,” one of those things is not like the others. Just hearing him say “Beyonce” in his next interview has me giggling already. Warner Bros. made the announcement today, but no word is available on the schedule or release dates, though rumors are shooting will start in the fall.

For those not familiar with the three previous iterations of A Star Is Born, the story is essentially a love affair between an alcoholic star in the twilight of their career and a young star on the rise. While no roles have been assigned with the casting news, it’s a safe assumption that Beyonce will play the latter character, which begs the question of who will play the other role. Hugh Jackman is probably sitting by his phone right now with sweaty palms. (Deadline)
