Since producer Jerry Bruckheimer has gotten back together with Paramount, the first thing they would like to shove down our throats are the long-discussed and speculated follow-ups to iconic 80′s films Beverly Hills Cop and Top Gun. Brett Ratner will be directing the fourth Beverly Hills Cop installment, which comes as little surprise, considering he’s become BFF’s with Eddie Murphy, apparently since Tower Heist, which must have been a strange set to kindle a friendship on.

Anyway, on the Top Gun front, it’s being reported that Tom Cruise is on board, which is something we’ve whispers of before, but Deadline is reporting it for reals this time, and they wouldn’t lie to us.

It’s a good time to live in the past!

Eddie Murphy, an individual whose recent original ideas, when they haven’t been lacking altogether, have been pretty abysmal (Meet Dave), is shopping around the best role of his career, for television, and he’s got a pretty big name behind him.

Shawn Ryan, a man who hasn’t been hurting for original ideas (The Shield, The Chicago Code, Terriers, Lie to Me, The Unit) has joined Murphy in drumming up some interest in a Beverly Hills Cop sequel that would follow Axel Foley’s son as he tries to make a name for himself outside the shadow of his father. Murphy would make guest appearances, probably as Axel, and hopefully not as a big fat guy or a Klump.

The show has been pitched to two of the big four, with the other two pitches coming today. It’s safe to say that this project has supplanted the Beverly Hills Cop 4 movie with Brett Ratner. Because Ryan > Ratner.

After spending the past couple decades or so pelting us with family fare such as Daddy Day Care, The Nutty Professor, Doctor Doolittle, Pluto Nash, Norbit, Shrek 1, Shrek 2, Shrek 3, Shrek 4, The Nutty Professor 2, and Meet Dave, Eddie Murphy has decided that it’s time to give us a little of the Eddie Murphy edge that helped us fall in love with the scrappy teenage comic in the early 80′s.

After knocking out those bleeding-edge Oscars in February (where he hopes to garner comparisons to bleeding-edge comic Billy Crystal), he is dumping all those familiar family roles to make Beverly Hills Cop into a TV show. About Axel Foley. And his son. So it’s pretty much a TV show about a family from a property that’s been in the cultural lexicon for the past 25 years.

Murphy wil produce the show and make appearances as Axel, who is now the chief of the Detroit Police Department. He claims he went the TV route because “None of the movie scripts were right; it was trying to force the premise. If you have to force something, you shouldn’t be doing it. It was always a rehash of the old thing.”

It’s pretty clear he’s trying here, folks. And I…I think that’s just terrific.
