Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have both found tremendous success since they struck out together and made names for themselves. However, their success has been largely independent of one another, which makes us long for an old-school nostalgic bro-down between the two.

They won’t be on screen together, but the closest we might get is Incorporated, a series they’re both producing for the SyFy network that focuses on shady companies of the future who wield too much power.

Yes…”the future.”

Can they at least make a cameo as slacker best friends who stumble upon a giant cover-up that goes…ALL THE WAY TO THE SENATE?

They should. Damon can play a stoner, and Affleck can play a jock. Or an overwhelmed single father. Whatever. JUST PUT THEM ONSCREEN TOGETHER, YOU MONSTERS!

By Jared Jones

My mind was a mess heading into David Fincher’s Gone Girl, constantly fluctuating between extremes of fanboyish optimism and sickening trepidation. Not having read Gillian Flynn’s novel upon which the movie is based, I made a conscious effort to learn as little about the story as possible, all the while battling with my preconceived notions that the film could only play out in one of two ways: in the brooding, meticulous nature of Fincher’s 2007 procedural thriller Zodiac, or in the dull, lifeless manner of 2011′s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo remake.

And to it’s credit, Gone Girl is very much a movie that relies on building a certain level of expectation before punishing you for being so goddamn judgemental. It was the perfect project for a master of neo noir like Fincher to adapt, one that attempts to raise the murder mystery (or rather, how a murder mystery story is often told) to a higher artistic level while dialing up all the pulpy elements that make us appreciate the genre so, and actually manages to maintain its own unique identity when being held against Fincher’s more recent aforementioned works.

On the morning of his fifth anniversary, college professor and failed writer Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) finds himself at the bar (his bar, actually), tipping back glasses of bourbon with his sister (Carrie Coon) and wondering when or where his marriage to the lovely Amy (Rosamund Pike) went wrong. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn that Amy is a writer herself and something of a local legend, having been the inspiration behind a series of heralded childrens books. Nick, on the other hand, is a corn fed Missourian (by his own admission) who enjoys a good reality TV marathon with a hand down his pants, Bundy style. She and Nick met at a cocktail mixer and shared an instant, seemingly unbreakable attraction to one another, which more or less equated to a lot of f*cking. “I really like you,” Amy says while Nick is going down on her. “You have a grade-A vagina” says Nick moments before proposing to her.

Between all the anniversary scavenger hunts and kinky, exhibitionist sex, it seems like Nick and Amy have it all, and it is the exploration of their early relationship (often told through a series of Amy’s journal entries) in the first half of the film that truly elevates Gone Girl above the level of most genre faire. We aren’t given a few select moments to define Nick and Amy as characters, but rather a slow, tense examination of a marriage torn apart when, to borrow a common cliche, life gets in the way. The admiration Nick and Amy once had for one another is replaced by bitter jealousy, their passion replaced by apathy, infidelity, and fear. Or so we’re led to believe.

It all comes to a head on that morning of their anniversary, when Nick returns home to find his wife missing amidst a conveniently-staged crime scene. His alienating demeanor and seemingly carefree treatment of Amy’s disappearance instantly makes him the prime target in her disappearance, with everyone from the feds to Missi Pyles’ Ellen Abbott — a sensationalist, dim-witted reporter that could not be a more obvious rip at Nancy Grace — labeling him as an incestuous sociopath who, like, totes murdered his sweet, innocent wife. Amy’s journal entries only aide in painting Nick as the cold, slowly-unraveling murderer that the evidence already has done a bang-up job of doing, and when we learn that Nick is putting it to his 20 year student on the side when he’s *not* hiding evidence from police, it’s almost impossible not to jump to the conclusion Fincher is all but cornering us into.

But then, about halfway in, Gone Girl throws away any semblance of realism it built up and dives headfirst into the public pool of Flavortown WhattheFucksville. While a less deft hand could have played up the film’s twist like a cartoonish episode of Law & Order, Fincher is somehow able to flip the switch without it feeling like a cheap cop out. In a scene straight out of Hitchcock’s Vertigo, believability is replaced by a madness that confounds you as much as it makes you want to stand up at a Yankees game and start rooting for the Sawx. Through its clever use of several genre tropes (the red herring and the unreliable narrator chief among them), Gone Girl presents its story as it wants us to understand it, and then, like an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, it strips back the veneer to reveal the world in all of its drunken, hamfisted glory. And it is glorious.

To discuss Gone Girl any further would be entering into spoiler territory, but I will say that, at two and a half hours, it never overstays its welcome. Gone Girl is easily Fincher’s warmest film to date, in both its palette and oddly enough, it’s reliance on dark humor. Seriously, the screener I went to had the audience in stitches, to the point that I wasn’t sure whether they were laughing to break the film’s suffocating tension or because the lighter moments were actually that funny. In any case, Gone Girl is a gorgeously-cinematographed, ridiculously entertaining experience that makes for one of Fincher’s finest efforts to date.

Grade: A

Even though Superman will probably break the sh*t out of it, Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice appears to have done something right by making the Batmobile look awesome.

Instagram user amacro13 posted set photos pictures of the new alleged Batmobile, although these look like (bad) 3D renderings to me. If this is real, and assuming it doesn’t drive up any walls, it’s pretty awesome as you can see for yourself.

But when compared to the Batmobile that Snyder teased months ago, something doesn’t add up. I’m not buying these pictures as legit until something official is released. In the meantime, we could just as easily say that this is a set photo of the new Batmobile.

We’ve already gleaned the plot of Gone Girl from the earlier trailer: Questions surround a husband’s (Ben Affleck) involvement in the wake of his wife’s murder. It’s creepy, it’s based on a book that supposedly has a pretty interesting twist, and it’s David Fincher, so you know you’ll be put through the ringer before it’s resolved.

However, did you know that during this whole ride, we’re going to get a dose of Neil Patrick Harris as a creepy, possible-murderer? That’s a twist in and of itself. Check out the trailer and watch America’s sweetheart completely upend his wholesome image.

David Fincher has shed some light on his left field casting of Emily Ratajkowski as Ben Affleck’s young mistress in Gone Girl. The character, as described in the novel is, “an alien fuck-doll of a girl… as different from my elegant, patrician wife as could be.” Fincher was looking for someone that women would hate and men would love, but Jennifer Love Hewitt was too old for the part so…

“I was talking with Ben [Affleck], and what I wanted for the Andie role was someone who could be incredibly divisive among men and women in the audience,” Fincher told GQ. “We needed somebody where, at the moment she appears, the women are going, ‘That is unconscionable and despicable.’ And you also have the men going, ‘Yes, but…’ And so Ben said, ‘Yeah, like the girl in the ‘Blurred Lines’ video.’ ”

Well done. That is a perfect display of Ben Affleck’s penis and Ben Affleck’s mouth working well in congress with one another. It’s called TEAMwork.

There are now rumors swirling that Warner Bros. are planning to make us talk shit about Bat-fleck for years to come. In addition to Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice and the Justice League film, the studio is also planning a standalone Batman film for 2019. Kevin Smith has never been more proud. You wanna know the title of the new Batman vs. Superman film? Nah, you don’t wanna know. You clicked here for some other reason. Well, just in case you didn’t, the subtitle of the new DC Comics superhero film is…

Dawn of Justice.

Well then. Okay.

I would call it a pun or play on words, but “dawn of justice” has absolutely zero idiomatic meaning. It’s gibberish. So the only meaning that can be ascertained is that it’s the beginning of the Justice League, featuring all sorts of awesome superheroes and Aquaman.

It sounds like they may have used the Transformers marketing team to establish this thing. Just terrible.

But fortunately, everyone is on board with Ben Affleck as Batman, so at least there’s that.

Dawn of Justice.”

Sheesh.

Yesterday, Zack Snyder teased the world with an image of the Batmobile beneath a car cover with the message, “Could be time to pull the tarp…Tomorrow?” He stayed true to his word but when pulling said tarp, it was a surprise to all to see that there was a Batman hiding under there too. Batfleck is definitely a departure from previous versions, with his tiny ears and spider veins on the suit that confirm, yes, Batman does lift, bro.

It’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect from the guy who did 300. We’ll have to keep an eye on Snyder’s Twitter feed to find out whether or not Alfred gets a cool sword or anything.

He might be out of work at the moment but at least David Fincher has a résumé now made stronger by this first trailer for Gone Girl. Based on the bestseller novel of the same name, the story centers on Ben Affleck as a husband presumed guilty of murdering his wife after she vanishes on their fifth wedding anniversary. Author Gillian Flynn stayed involved with the project by handling scripting and including an ending different than that in the book. The cops walking around in fields and searching for a body a la the Janie’s Got A Gun video is all Fincher. As is the weird cover of Elvis Costello’s “She.” Is that Kermit singing?

If you’ll remember back to the dog days of last summer when it was announced Ben Affleck would star as the Caped Crusader for Zack Snyder in Batman vs. Superman, you’ll also remember that everybody lost their mind over the news. And not in a good way. Now there’s an update that you’ll have longer to stew in your discontent. Warner Bros. is moving the original theatrical date back 10 months into 2016.

Instead of premiering on July 17, 2015, the film will now be getting released on May 6, 2016 in order to ”[allow] the filmmakers time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story.”

However, the move to that weekend will pit DC‘s most important film ever up against Marvel as they had already lifted their leg and peed upon that date. Is this a brilliant strategy on Warner Bros/DC’s behalf? After all, if Marvel does release a film on that date it certainly won’t be an Avengers film and you’d think something like Batman vs. Superman is hyped enough to beat a Marvel standalone. Apart from the fact that it’s probably going to be super-shitty. Let’s hope this 10 extra months gives the producers enough time to nurture the creative and turn in a film that stands up to the legacy of the characters. They already screwed up Green Lantern and almost ruined Superman. Then again, they can always try again with a Batman vs. Superman reboot four summers later. (The Wrap)

OMG! The new Batman is gonna be reluctant! Sweet! A dark, troubled superhero. It was just a matter of time before someone tackled the concept.

Following in the tiny, seemingly-pirouetted footsteps of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, Ben Affleck‘s Batman will be an exhausted shell of himself, having mired in crime fighting for far too long.

Whether or not this means we’ll see Bruce Wayne half-heartedly taking his wife to Buffalo Wild Wings or vacationing in Orlando is anyone’s guess, but it’s interesting to hear a studio exec speak so bluntly about the outlook of the revamped superhero.

Warner Bros. head Kevin Tsujihara stated Batman will be ”kind of tired and weary and seasoned and been doing it for a while.” SOLD!

Here’s to hoping Batman’s new costume is entirely sweatpants as we watch him languish on level 34 of Candy Crush.

Ben Affleck, who has established a second, contemporary career as a director following a “cooling off” period in his acting career that lay around Reindeer Games, Paycheck, and Sum of All Fears, will be dropping his commitments behind the camera to play the Dark Knight in 2015′s Superman film.

He’s no longer attached to direct an adaptation of the French film Tell No One, and other sources are reporting that his other projects of interest, while not outright abandoned, will be delayed until he’s able to get that pelvic “v” thing going on that you get from tons of leglifts in the Roman chair.

So it will be about seven hundred skinless chicken breasts and three trainers named Gunnar until Affleck puts back on his director hat. Because Batman comes first. Every artist knows that.

Warner Bros. has announced that their newest Batman will be Ben Affleck. Which is funny because he was Daredevil for DC comics and that didn’t go super well. Rather than just rush right out and give him, like, his own movie, they’re going to gradually let us get used to Daredevil as Batman over the course of the next three years and at least one movie in which he makes an appearance during the next Superman film, directed by Zack Snyder.

Then we remember that in Hollywoodland Ben Affleck played George Reeves who played Superman, and everything gets very messy and we start to wonder if Benny A’s parents didn’t trade him to DC Comics for an Aquaman sleeping bag during his childhood years.

Now we just need to hear about how the best part of Batman’s day is the 30 seconds when he’s walking up to Alfred’s door and he’s hoping that Alfred won’t answer and just fucking tok off to see about a girl.

I’d watch that film.

Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl was last summer’s most exciting page-turner so it was no surprise it would wind up on the big screen. However, it was originally expected to be a Reese Witherspoon film but then David Fincher got involved. Now it’s picking up some heat as Fincher has selected Ben Affleck to play the film’s lead, likable-ish maybe-murderer Nick Dunne.

The story centers around a man whose wife goes missing on their fifth wedding anniversary. All clues point to his being guilty as his story and the info in his wife’s diary (told via flashback) don’t match up. And then, things get super crazy. Charlize Theron, Natalie Portman, and Emily Blunt are being looked at to play Amy Dunne. What do you think of this casting? Can you see Affleck playing someone capable of killing? We already certainly know that he can murder a cheeseburger.

Looks like Argo isn’t playing so hot in Iran. The nation, who complain the film “makes the people of Iran look like they have no self-determination, and indisputably support violence,” have suggested they be allowed to murder director Ben Affleck. Violently.

In a radio interview Tuesday on the Kevin Barrett Show, [former political analyst for Ronald Reagan, Barbara] Honegger stated that filmmaker Ben Affleck might one day be hanged for war crimes and treason – not only for Argo, which she said is designed to pave the road to war on Iran, but also for his role in the 2001 film Pearl Harbor, an earlier intelligence operation designed to pave the road to the 9/11 “New Pearl Harbor.” According to Honegger, Affleck – like his character in Argo– appears to be a covert operator posing as a filmmaker.

Somebody please swing by Josh Hartnett’s place. It’s been a while since anyone has heard from him. (Press TV)

An Iranian director has announced through an Iranian news agency that he’s planning on putting together a film that addresses Mr. Ben Affleck‘s contentions in the hit film Argo.

And then we will have two sides to the story.

Details are sketchy at this time, but the film is supposedly titled The General Staff and will begin filming early next year. It’s not known exactly what claims will be disputed, but, considering it’s a “response,” there will probably be more than a few different takes on the facts stipulated in the American film.

Argo was a source of embarassment for Iran, so it’s probably a safe bet that there’s a state-sponsored agenda here, good, bad, or otherwise, so it will be interesting to see how the facts are addressed.

And of course, Ben Affleck probably won’t be reprising his role in the film, but considering that the film took place in Iran in the 1970′s, that probably doesn’t mean there will be any fewer beards in the production.

Rotten Tomatoes has used the power of math to name the Top 100 Films of 2012, and the winner is Argo. At #26.

The twenty-five films that edged Argo out all fall in the documentary or Pixar trying to make more money category with Finding Nemo 3D ranking at #8 and Monsters, Inc. 3D ranking at #16. Which begs the question: why the Hell did newspapers run reviews of films everyone saw a decade ago? The storytelling didn’t change, it just poked out more.

Pixar should re-release Argo as a documentary in 3D. It would clean up.

Because he’s been considered the thinking man’s Josh Whedon ever since his powerful turn in Forces of Nature, DC has reached out to Ben Affleck The Director to see if he wants to continue the journey he started with Gone Baby Gone, continued with The Town, then continued some more with the upcoming Argo, with a film about Superman, Green Lantern, The Flash, and Wonder Woman, or Gregarious Girl, or somesuch nonsense in Justice League.

While directors such as Jon Favreau and Peter Berg have recently made big names from themselves turning from gritty fare to overblown blockbusters, it doesn’t seem fitting that Ben Affleck would chase down that path when he has had such a promising career with crime thrillers and the upcoming political thriller Argo.

But maybe he likes money much more than I give him credit for. Details at 11.

Ben Affleck is back with his third directorial feature Argo and it looks like the sumbitch has done it again. Here the director also stars as a CIA agent who hatches the kooky plan of rescuing American hostages from late 70′s Iran by disguising them as the crew of a Canadian sci-fi film. That fake film is titled Argo and not Killer Poutine like I would have expected. Do they want to open to 200 million loonies or what? And just what the eff is an Argo? Sounds like the way Ben Affleck pronounces ”ergo.”

He sort of looks like a real-life Family Circus character here, which I’m positive is not what the producers or director (also Ben Affleck) were going for.

In Argo, Affleck plays Tony Mendez, a CIA “exfiltration” specialist tasked with a ballsy plan to pull six American hostages from Iran. The film is based on a true story, which means that they probably did some research to make Affleck look like this hairy lion of a man, and didn’t just pick this look to make him appear like an ass.

If you’re digging this look (you’ve got two eyes and a heart, don’t you?), then get excited for future looks at characters played by Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, and Kyle Chandler. The fake beard guy that’s assigned to this film will be earning his money through blood, sweat, tears.

I hope the beards get rescued safely.

Nevermind that whole David Yates is adapting Stephen King‘s The Stand business. Yates is now out and Warner Bros. wants Ben Affleck to be in.

It was announced over the summer that the screenwriter and the director of several Harry Potter films, Steve Kloves and Yates, would adapt King’s post-apocalyptic doorstop across three sweeping films. However, Yates lacks the hunk status so the intent is to now replace him with the guy from Gigli. Affleck, who is currently directing the hostage drama Argo, has two films under his belt as of this moment. Argo will make it three. He seems like a strange pick for a genre project like this. First of all, it’s massive. Secondly, it doesn’t take place in Boston. Can he find as much success with the Maine accent? (Deadline)

Bryan Cranston has shown us his chops in Breaking Bad, so now he’s gonna show us his range by playing an Irish CIA agent in Ben Affleck‘s Argo. His character, Jack O’Donnell (that’s a little on-the-nose, isn’t it?), was Eisenhower’s wartime bodyguard years before the 1979 hostage situation in Iran.

Argo follows the rescue of several hostages who were under the guise of scouting a film in Iran. Ben Affleck recently announced that he would be playing the head of the operation, Tony Mendez. John Goodman and Alan Arkin will co-star.

It would appear Cranston is getting his Hollywood on with roles here and in the upcoming big-budget John Carter (formerly of Mars). But he’ll always be Walter White to us. Or the dentist from Seinfeld. But definitely not the dad from Malcolm in the Middle. (Variety)

Like sands through the hourglass, so is the casting news of June 27, 2011:

Ben Affleck objectively decided that he was the best man to star in his next directing project, Argo. He will play Tony Mendez, the CIA operative tasked with extracting six American hostages from Iran in 1979. He thought it was the smart move because he was going to be near those locations anyway, directing everyone for that movie. (Variety)

Nicole Kidman will be joining Lee Daniels’ The Paperboy as a woman who develops a penpal relationship with a man on death row. She will be replacing Sofia Vergara, but considering the timing of Tobey Maguire‘s departure from the project last week, let’s all just pretend that she’ll be filling in for him. It’s funnier that way and not altogether improbable. (THR)

Rosario Dawson will be starring in an indie drama with a decidedly non-indie cast. Fire with Fire, the story of a man who enters the witness protection program, only to lash out against the men threatening him will also star Bruce Willis, Quentin “Rampage” Jackson, Josh Duhamel, 50 Cent, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Vinnie Jones. The indie spirit is alive and well, folks. (Variety)

Finally, David Strathairn will join Steven Spielberg‘s star-studded Lincoln, hitting theaters just in time to qualify for the 2013 Oscars. He will play Secretary of State William Seward to Daniel Day-Lewis‘ Honest Abe. Sally Field will also star as Lincoln’s wife, Mary Todd. (Deadline)

John Goodman will portray a real life make-up artist that rescued six hostages from Iran. I don’t think he’ll be able to draw on his experience playing Babe Ruth for this one.

No one said that rescuing hostages was going to be easy, but no one said that it had to be this complex either. Ben Affleck’s Argo is based on the 1979 hostage rescue mission in Iran. The government claimed the diplomat taken hostage were actually a film crew scouting locations for a film called Argo. And that’s the story of the ACTUAL film  called Argo. It’s possible that Affleck‘s film could also be a ruse, but contemplating that makes my head hurt, so we’ll ignore that possibility.

In order to get their hostages back, they needed some legitimacy, so they hired real-life make-up artist John Chambers (Goodman) to sell the whole affair to the Iranian powers that be.

Goodman joins Alan Arkin in the film, which requires the cast to live together in squalor for two weeks to get their heads right for their roles. Take that, rich, famous actors! (Variety)

Ben Affleck‘s transformation into Rob Reiner is nearly complete. The actor-cum-director is currently at the helm of Argo and now has his next project lined up for him. Warner Bros and Universal Pictures have optioned the rights to the Alex Coben mystery novel, Tell No One. The plot is centered around a pediatrician whose wife goes missing. When he goes to find her, he is severely beaten. He awakes to discover his wife has been murdered and he is the top suspect. When it’s later ruled that she was the victim of a serial killer he is let off the hook. Years later, after the capture of the killer, bodies begin to turn up in the same fashion which puts the pediatrician back under suspicion. Then he receives evidence that his wife may still be alive.

This isn’t the first time that Hollywood has taken a stab at the material. It was once set up at Sony Pictures with Star Trek’s Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci on scripting duties. When they couldn’t figure out how to make the plot make any damn sense, it was scrapped. Then, it was successfully put on the screen in France and that’s what brought it to the attention of Affleck. Which is all well and good, but what I’d really like to see is a French version of Star Trek. (Deadline)

For his next directorial project Argo, Ben Affleck is putting Daredevil behind him and going for realism. The drama centers around six US diplomat taken hostage by Iranians in 1979. In order to rescue them, the CIA teamed up with the Canadian government to locate the hostages, disguise them as a film crew and smuggle them out of Tehran. The “hostages” actually managed to escape the Iranian hostage-takers and holed up in the Canadian embassy as “house-guests” for 84 days.

In order for Affleck to achieve realism, he will require six actors to live together in a house for two weeks. Grueling. Could you imagine eating Poutine for nearly three months and only being allowed out to tan and workout? Just wait until SAG hears about this. (Vulture)
