Alex Pettyfer is becoming the reigning king of underperforming young adult adaptations, with I Am Number Four and Beastly just released mere weeks away from each other doing similarly underwhelming numbers. Now, the young actor might go three for three, as he’s in the running for another high profile YA adaptation: Gary Ross‘s The Hunger Games. Screen Junkies previously reported that upwards of THIRTY sought after young actresses from Jennifer Lawrence to Chloe Moretz were in the running to play the lead in the film, and now one of those actresses might have found someone to play her love interest, , Peeta Mellark.

Pettyfer, who appears to be the “next big thing” in the eyes of top Hollywood execs, but not the viewing public, is weighing his options to determine what his next film will be, as The Hunger Games isn’t his only option. He’s currently fielding offers to be in the next Jason Bourne movie, A film with Jeff Bridges and Jennifer Lawrence called The Last Apprentice, and a biopic about race car driver James Hunt. Pile them on while you can, handsome guy. There’s a square jawed young fellow behind you, waiting to take your place. And behind him, and behind him, etc. (The Playlist)

Every once in a while a movie that some say is too “weird” or “quirky” to be successful ends up being a hit. More often than not, it seems, these movies star Johnny Depp – and this weekend’s number 1 movie Rango is a prime piece of this sub-genre. And not only did audiences turn out to see Rango to the tune of $38 million (and that’s good old 2D ticket prices), it’s safe to say that they did BECAUSE of how weird it is, rather than despite the weirdness, at least if the word of mouth I heard over the weekend is any indication.

Taking up second place was the weird-in-a-less-commercially-viable way The Adjustment Bureau with $20.9 million, with the modern-teenager adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, Beastly in third with a measly $10 million. You can get more detailed numbers, including just how badly Take Me Home Tonight bombed, at Box Office Mojo.

Beastly actually has a good thing going for a while. It totally loses its steam but I was about halfway to recommending this one before it wussed out.

Kyle Kingson (Alex Pettyfer) is running for some green committee position in high school and he actually preaches the glory of being hot and rich. He is a blatantly shallow A-hole, all the way to flirting with a gay teacher for grade. He gets it from his dad Rob (Peter Krause), a newscaster who fires women for gaining 10 lbs. Kyle is racist to his maid Zola (Lisa Gay Hamilton) and we later see he had a “no fatties” profile online.

If you’re going to do Beauty and the Beast in high school, go all out. The school itself looks like a trendy nightclub. It seems like the movie is actually in the heads of the self-involved teens who need to learn this lesson, even though they won’t get it.

Kyle went too far making fun of the goth chick Kendra (Mary Kate Olsen), so she curses him. His face transforms with scars and tattoos run down his body. He’s still got the abs though. If she really wanted to curse him, she should’ve given him a gut that won’t go away no matter how many crunches he does. That nose bubble is really gross though.

Rob actually tries to get a medical answer so the film pays lip service to modern science. He ends up dumping Kyle in an apartment that’s slightly less decorated than his swank pad. He claims he’s gone to rehab and calls himself Hunter when he does go out into the world.

As Hunter, Kyle gets a peak at what people really thought of him. His girlfriend is actually relieved she doesn’t have to be mean anymore to keep up with him. Lindy (Vanessa Hudgens) actually appreciated his commitment to his ideals, even though he was totally off base.

You know how the B&B curse goes. If someone loves him for who he is inside, he gets to be hot again. Lindy is his best shot at that, so he romances her and that’s when the movie slows down to a bore.

First of all, the plot that gets Lindy into his “lair” is so stupid. Kyle foils a drug deal involving her father and kills a dealer. The dealer’s brother vows to kill Lindy for revenge, so Kyle convinces her dad to let him protect her. I know they’re trying to mimic the castle exile of the classic story (or the sewers of the TV series?) but come on!

It would have been much more interesting if Hunter pursued Lindy in the real world and got to experience more of society’s reaction to his new appearance. Going to the zoo after hours doesn’t count. The courtship is just boring and even Neil Patrick Harris as the funny tutor Simon can’t liven it up.

You weren’t going to see Beastly anyway so I’m only confirming that. I’m more disappointed it couldn’t keep up the momentum it had going. It would’ve been nice to give a shocking recommendation to it. Even at only 80 minutes without credits, they still let it drag.

11 Classic Deformed Movie Characters http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-lists/11-classic-deformed-movie-characters/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-lists/11-classic-deformed-movie-characters/#comments Thu, 03 Mar 2011 20:05:59 +0000 Jame Gumb http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=31391 Beastly is basically the retelling of Beauty and the Beast, except the beast in question is just a bald dude with a bunch of facial tattoos. The main character in Beastly is a handsome young man who is deformed by a witch’s curse. It’s basically the retelling of Beauty and the Beast, except the beast in question is just a bald dude with a bunch of facial tattoos. I’m not sure that really qualifies as beastly. People pay to have that shit done. If the producers of the film had done their homework, they could used anyone of these classic deformed characters as inspiration.

Sloth – Goonies

Sloth is a heavily deformed member of the Fratelli family, a group of fugitives hiding out in the Pacific Northwest. Due to his ghoulish appearance and mental problems, Sloth is treated as an outcast by his family, who chain him in front of a television set in a secluded room. But as Chunk, a member of the Goonies, finds out, beneath Sloth’s outward appearance is a kind-hearted hero. Kind hearted or not, Chunk probably shouldn’t have agreed to let Sloth live with him at the end of the film. It’s only a matter of time until one of them ends up dead. My money’s on Chunk.

Pluto – The Hills Have Eyes

Figuratively speaking, family vacations are usually a horrific struggle for survival. But in The Hills Have Eyes, that is literally the case. When a group of travelers become lost in the Nevada desert, they find themselves being hunted by a pack of cannibal mutants. Pluto, one of the mutants in question, was played by actor Michael John Berryman, who was born with 26 birth defects as the result of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, a condition that left him unable to grow hair or fingernails. His unique appearance was a perfect fit for the film.

Freakshow – Harold and Kumar Go to Whitecastle

What can you say about Freakshow? He’s kind, helpful, and he loves Jesus. Also, he’s very accommodating, so much so that you’re probably more than welcome to bang his ridiculously hot wife. Just don’t make comments about his hideous boils. He can hear everything you’re saying.

Rocky – Mask

EMBED-Inappropriate Laugh Track – Mask – Watch more free videos

In Mask, the main character (Rocky) suffers from craniodiaphyseal dysplasia, a bone disorder that causes a buildup of calcium resulting in sever facial disfigurements and early death. But as the clip above demonstrates, that didn’t stop old Rocky from having some laughs. Ugh, I’m going to hell.

Justin Mcleod – The Man Without a Face

In The Man Without a Face, Mel Gibson plays a teacher who was badly disfigured in a tragic car accident. At the time, the film received favorable reviews. However, looking back and knowing what we know now, Gibson’s story is probably just a metaphor for Jews controlling the financial industry.

Quasimode – The Hunchback of Notre Dame

If you’re looking for famous cinematic deformities, you can’t do much better than Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. In case the title wasn’t clear, it’s about a hunchback who lives at the famous French cathedral. Charles Laughton plays the titular character in the classic 1939 version of the film. The role was also performed by Lon Chaney in an even early rendition.

John Merrick – The Elephant Man

This David Lynch film tells the story of an Englishman named John Merrick (a.k.a. The Elephant Man) who suffered from horrifying deformities. As a result, he was forced to join a freak show as a means to support himself. Eventually, he ended up living out his days at a hospital under the care of a sympathetic doctor. And in case you were wondering, he was not an animal.

Ephialtes – 300

If you had the misfortune of being born with a deformity in ancient Sparta, chances are you you weren’t going to last very long. The Spartans had a nasty habit of killing babies that were born with physical defects. Ephialtes wasn’t killed at birth, but was an outcast none the less. Out of resentment, he betrayed the Spartan people by giving secret information to the hated Persians. And in the film 300, he did it all in super-cool slow motion.

Dawn O’Keefe – Teeth

Outwardly, Dawn O’Keefe doesn’t seem to have any deformities. But as the old saying goes, it’s what’s on the inside the counts. Specifically, the inside of her vagina.

Erik, The Phantom – The Phantom of the Opera

Lon Chaney stars in this cinematic retelling of Gaston Leroux classic novel about facially deformed creature who lives in the shadows of a Parisian Opera House. All and all, he’s not a bad guy. Just don’t take off his mask, or things will get ugly.

The Whole Damn Cast – Freaks

As the title suggests, Freaks is a film about freaks, and it stars honest to goodness freaks. If you’re looking for deformities, this film has the mother-load.

As far as up-and-coming actresses go, Beastly actress Vanessa Hudgens is a weird case. She’s a direct product of the Disney-inustrial complex, so it’s tempting to write her off as just another disposable, fresh-faced Franken-bot designed to entertatain the pre-teen masses until something better comes along. Hudgens, however, seems to possess a somewhat longer shelf life than the majority of her dancing, singing, Sketchers-wearing peers. She’s trying for edgier roles, moving away from the predictable paths of self-destruction trailblazed by the Lohans of the world and taking on projects that might actually be… kind of cool. Sucker Punch, for example, will surely be a sweet ride, and Hudgens will be right there in a starring role. Of course, it’s too early to predict where she’ll be in a few years. The life of a child star is a volatile one, and cocaine is a hell of a drug.

A word from Vanessa: “My passion is doing movies, and as long as I keep doing that, I’ll be happy. I want to do movies, fun roles and dramatic ones. I love all of it.”

We’ve covered Beastly before, so I’ll be brief on the plot specifics. A handsome, 25-year ol high school student is cursed to look like a Henna-tattooed penis and mus break the spell by discovering inner beauty and making out with Vanessa Hudgens. The real story here is the film was pushed out of its initial release date to make room for Zac Efron‘s Charlie St. Cloud. In honor of its new March 18th, 2011 release, we have another look at the film. Between Alex Pettyfer‘s tribal fug monster look and NPH’s blind guy glasses, it looks like the production designer raided the X-Men 3 prop closet.
