He should live in an underwater house already.

James Cameron has two loves — creating new technologies that forever change the landscape of film making, and breathing through a tube. So, it comes as no surprise that he’ll combine both passions for the Avatar sequels. Producer Jon Landau revealed yesterday at the 2013 NAB Technology Summit on Cinema that Cameron will develop techniques for underwater motion capture. It has hencetofore been considered impossible due to the buoyancy of ping pong balls.

Speaking at a technology in cinema conference, Landau said the Oscar-winning director proposed to make use of the process “because we can simulate it visually but can’t simulate it experientially for them”. Cameron has previously hinted at the possibility of exploring the oceans of Pandora, the forest moon setting for his 2009 3D box-office hit, in future films.

“We want to take advantage of the technologies brilliant people are putting out to make the next two movies even more emotionally engaging and visually tantalising, and to really wrap up the story arc of our two main characters,” Landau said on Sunday in a keynote speech at the 2013 NAB Technology Summit on Cinema in Las Vegas. He described the process as “performance capture in water”. (Deadline)

This is great news for cinema. But bad news for Andy Serkis, who famously suffers from a condition that makes him water-soluble.

James Cameron announced to the New York Times that he’s retired from any non-Avatar filmmaking. Like several rappers before him, it was all bullshit. Consider today his unretirement from projects exclusive to the Avatar universe.

Cameron and Lightstorm Entertainment have picked up the rights to The Informationist, a novel by Taylor Stevens that has drawn comparisons to Girl With The Dragon Tattoo as well as the Jason Bourne series. Cameron’s intention is to shoot it after Avatar 3 and before the Avatar prequel. The story follows a girl in central Africa raised by gunners and mercenaries, who goes into the business of selling information. Which I was always lead to believe is free. Just dial 4-1-1. If anything, it costs a few cents.

Because money.

The extremely wealthy James Cameron isn’t hurting for money on account of his extreme wealth. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know a good (read: weird) deal when he sees one.

Last month, Cameron spread his love of 3D to China by partnering up with state-owned film groups to distribute cameras and 3D technology. While there, he saw gold in them there Chinese hills. Although Avatar 2 and 3 and already funded, Cameron wants to try to get China to flip some of the bill. And to sweeten the pot, he’s willing to throw some Chinese actors into the sequels.

“Within five years, China could easily be as big a gross-revenue market for film as North America, and there are very specific economic incentives for having both Chinese content and Chinese co-production. We are already funded on Avatar 2 and 3, but if we qualify as a co-production, there might be some incentives in the percentage of revenue we can take out of China,”

“We are running the numbers to see if that makes sense.” At very least, the director could recruit Chinese actors to work in the movies, which will be distributed worldwide by Fox (though Cameron has not set release dates yet). “For Avatar, we can certainly use Chinese actors as performance capture actors because any accent issues will hide within the Na’vi accent,” says Cameron.

Or just get Rob Schneider.

“So we can have Chinese Na’vi; [and in the live-action sequences] we can also have Chinese actors who speak English in the film.
We are projecting a future in Avatar, and if you project that future out, it is logical that there would be a number of Chinese amongst the contingent on Pandora.”

Why stop there? Can probably get some pretty sweet endorsements and merchandise sales by creating X-Games Na’vi. Food for thought. (THR)

Good. I had only reached 25% of my "heavy-handed preachiness" threshold with the first one.

I liked the first Avatar. I thought that it did an admirable job of putting a thin plot on the back burner in order to take the audience on a cutting-edge journey the likes of which they’d never seen. And in doing that, created a pretty moving piece of art.

That said, I wouldn’t say I am scrambling for three more installments. I’d say my desire is much closer to “zero” more installments. However, this isn’t about me. It never is. This is about James Cameron’s weird mind and sense of purpose, which is now telling him that he is only 25% done telling the story of Avatar. This is the same type of voice that told the Wachowski brothers that they were only 33% done with The Matrix story after finishing the first one. Needless to say, this voice is both terrible and dangerous.

The fourth installment of the CGI-ish epic will follow the early expeditions to Pandora and [WHITE NOISE].

In other news, that Arrested Development reunion really seems to be coming together nicely, doesn’t it?

This won't get old.

Someone didn’t learn the lesson of diminishing marginal returns from the Wachowski Brothers and their ill-fated Matrix sequels.

And that someone is James Cameron.

Sigourney Weaver, who has worked with Cameron on Aliens, has said that she’s signing on to appear in all three of them, but she has no idea what the story is. In her own words, “I just show up.”

What a professional.

Cameron has hinted at “non-linear storytelling” and time travel in the sequels, which doesn’t make me cringe as much as I thought it would, because as ridiculous as JC is, he’s always proven capable of telling a story in a thoughtful, clear fashion, even if those stories are sometimes silly as all get-out.

It’s no surprise that these things are filming all at once, given that they’re such an undertaking, but the sheer number of Avatar films on the horizon sorta makes my stomach turn.

Here’s to hoping maybe one of them is a Dan Harmon-helmed claymation version with the cast of Community.

Oh. Wait. Shit.

Who Else Would Want To Tweet From The Ocean's Deepest Point?

James Cameron, perhaps the most lauded and well-known director in the world, has a reputation for being a bit…ridiculous. He’s allegedly demanding and can have a temper, but that’s pretty much for the course, so I wouldn’t call him a jerk in that capacity. He’s just got a bit of an ego that manifests itself in strange ways, like silly acceptance speeches, goofy pictures, and lots and lots of divorces from wives.

While that may not make him particularly desirable to live or work with, it makes him plenty fun to write about. Peep this.

He Tweeted From The Ocean’s Deepest Point

The impetus for this inventory of silly Cameron behavior is his recent submersion to the deepest point of the ocean, then his tweet from there, making him (probably) the person that holds the record for the deepest tweet in history. Sounds dirty, but really it’s just absurd.

I’m hoping that we’re only a few years away from Cameron getting another divorce so that he can marry the sea in a civil ceremony in Vermont.

He’s Been Married Five Times

He’s like the Liz Taylor of men! First married in 1978 to Sharon Williams, Cameron’s revolving door of nuptials and pledges included Gale Ann Hurd, Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow, Terminators 1 and 2 star Linda Hamilton, and Suzy Amis, to whom he has been married since 2000. Whoa! 12 years. We may have found a keeper.

Judging by many of the accounts of actors and crew members on his sets, coexisting with James is no walk in the park for three months, so I can’t imagine that living with him and his peccadilloes day in and day out would be a walk in the park.

His Golden Globes Acceptance Speech Contained A Line In Na’vi

Yup, he tossed in a line from a fictional language he created upon receipt of a Golden Globe. Not an Oscar, mind you, but a Golden Globe.

He offered up this little pearl to the drunk guests in attendance and the woefully sober audiences at home:

“I just want to say,” the shaggy-haired director said, “Bonati komaei mismoka mismokay — which means, I see you, my brothers and sisters.”

He sees us? That’s terrific news! We see you, too, James. And you’re a big, glorious vision of a man. Shine on, you crazy diamond! Why can he quote his own language in a moment of glory, but when I won that beer pong tourney and offered thanks in a mumbled drunken language I made up, it was a minor tragedy? Doesn’t seem fair to me at all.

Make no mistake, if you didn’t enjoy Star Wars: The Phantom Menace before, you certainly won’t enjoy it in 3D. Spotting the trend of classic films re-released to theaters in 3D, George Lucas jumped on the opportunity with plans to release 3D versions of each Star Wars film for the next six years. We don’t need this. We don’t want this. It only sullies the original films even more than they’ve already been sullied.

There comes a time when artists and directors need to step back from their work and just let it exist. To continue to go in and tinker ruins the whole. Also, it looks really desperate. Stars Wars: The Phantom Menace isn’t a “classic” in the good sense of the word. Rather, it’s a classic example of an out-of-touch filmmaker who can’t let go. Please learn from history, George.

Like these films didn’t.

The Twilight Saga

To further dump the carryalls of Twihards, Summit re-released each of the Twilight films in the weeks leading up to the release of Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 1. As added incentive to lure fans away from the DVD copies they already own, the films were updated to include introductions and interviews with the cast. That and the promise of not having to worry about cat hair getting on everything.

Avatar

As a fan of kajillions of dollars, James Cameron had to take the opportunity to squeeze more from Avatar. The film’s original run was cut shorter than he’d have liked when it had to be pulled from 3D theaters to make room for Tim Burton‘s Alice In Wonderland. The solution was to bring it back for fans to catch in August after the summer’s big releases simmered down. The re-release featured an additional nine minutes of footage which sadly didn’t focus more on hot tail sex. The added footage revolves around the death of the brash dickhead Na’vi hunter Tsu’tey, whose demise in the original cut did seem a little unceremonious. The new footage also introduces us to the Sturmbeest. Sounds like pretty cool additions, but would he have added these scenes if not for the Alice In Wonderland push? I could have just as well waited to see deleted scenes when the film was released for home systems.

This list will prove just how capable we writers are without our precious "Wikipedia."

As you probably know by now, Wikipedia has gone dark today in order to protest SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act. Like thousands of other journalists, Screen Junkies writers use Wikipedia not as a final source in our research, but as a jumping-off point, with its claims noted, but always, always, verified using more reputable sources.

In an effort to demonstrate that Wikipedia is a helpful tool, but by no means the alpha and omega of our efforts, we thought we would run through the 9 highest-grossing films of all time while Wikipedia is shut down. I challenge our readers to spot any difference in the quality of research.

Let the games begin.

9. Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland is of course based off a book of the same name, written by an author quite some time ago. The primary characters are Alice, Christopher Cat, the Wicked Queen, and the Mad Hatter. The film, despite being horrible, managed to gross millions of dollars, putting it in the #9 spot. To give you an idea of how much money this film grossed, imagine that for every dollar that it made, you stacked a ruler lengthwise on top of another ruler. The resulting tower of rulers would be many million feet tall!

8. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stronger Tides

Pirates of the Caribbean is a bit of a Cinderella story, in that many questioned not only how successful it would be, but why it was actually being made. No one wanted to take seriously a film that was based on a ride at Disneyworld or perhaps Disneyland. Maybe both. The first film, which was titled Pirates of the Caribbean: [SOMETHING], came a bit after Johnny Depp’s work on 21 Jump Street, but before his death. The film also starred Orlando Bloom, who I’m completely positive is dating that hot Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr. I don’t need Wikipedia to tell me who Miranda Kerr is banging.

Hmm. I know they were together like two years ago, but I also know it’s hard to stay faithful on movie sets. Especially with Salma Hayek and Keira Knightley around.

7. Toy Story 3

This was at least the 10th film by Pixar. Some of the other films they did were ANTZ, Bee Movie, and Shrek. This made more money than all of those films, possibly combined. Toy Story 3 was based on a script of the same name. Both the script and the film featured a cowboy, a deep sea diver named Hank, and myriad friends. This film also made millions of dollars. Steve Jobs was also involved in every Pixar movie. I believe he actually wrote the script for Mulan.

If Spinning Teacups can be a ride, so can these.

The announcement that James Cameron and Disney are teaming to create Avatar: The Ride seems like a no-brainer. The movie made butt-clumps of cash and the instantly recognizable characters live in a lush world of breathtaking beauty. Also, there are these, like, dragon things they fly on. It only makes sense that the world of Pandora would me immortalized as a thrill-ride.

However, there are a few other films out there that deserved their chance to frighten and exhilarate thousands of excited fans. But alas, for some reason or another, the deals never went through. Here are seven films that would undoubtedly make kick-ass amusement park attractions.

Final Destination 3

Though it would be tough to get the insurance companies on board, Final Destination 3 would make an excellent roller-coaster. Think of how scared you and your friends would be knowing that the brakes and safety equipment could give at any moment. But which moment? It’s the anticipation that’s truly scary.

Titanic

Titanic has thrill ride written all over it. Imagine the rush as you cling to a railing with icy water rushing to meet you. Then your life boat-shaped pod drops and stops just short of making a splash before rising up and doing it all over again.

James Cameron is chomping at the bit.

It turns out that the immersive 3D world of <a href="http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/Avatar-2-will-explore-pandoras-oceans/” target=”_blank”>Avatar just wasn’t immersive enough. As such, James Cameron and Disney have decided to go one step further by building the world of Pandora. No, they’re not creating an alien world and launching it into orbit (at least not until the technology is there). They are actually building at Avatar theme park ride at Animal Kingdom in Orlando, Florida.

“Avatar created a world which audiences can discover again and again and now, through this incredible partnership with Disney, we’ll be able to bring Pandora to life like never before. With two new Avatar films currently in development, we’ll have even more locations, characters and stories to explore,” said James Cameron in a press release. “I’m chomping at the bit to start work with Disney’s legendary Imagineers to bring our Avatar universe to life. Our goal is to go beyond current boundaries of technical innovation and experiential storytelling, and give park goers the chance to see, hear, and touch the world of Avatar with an unprecedented sense of reality.”

That’s awesome news for Cameron. How gratifying it must be to see a world you created turned into an experience. I think we all can agree that Titanic would have made an awesome ride. (Deadline)

Look I am a bad person to be reporting about this. I only saw 5 minutes of Avatar on HBO, and the trailer made me uncomfortable when I saw it in front of Inglourious Basterds. That’s right, I didn’t like the giant blue cat-people-things. I’ll get up on my soapbox and say that we need better movies, not shinier, more expensive ways to cram mediocre movies down our dumb throats. But Cameron seemingly doesn’t agree, and he’s got billions of dollars that also disagree. Here’s the official press release:

James Cameron and Vince Pace Form New Venture to Accelerate 3D Solutions Across All Entertainment Platforms

Legendary filmmaker and 3D visionary, James Cameron has teamed up with acclaimed cinematographer and fellow 3D pioneer, Vince Pace to form CAMERON – PACE Group (CPG), which seeks to accelerate worldwide growth of 3D across all entertainment platforms including features, episodic and live television, sports, advertising and consumer products, pioneering a new generation of camera systems, services and a variety of creative tools that are innovative, powerful and easier to embrace. Cameron and Pace unveiled the new company this morning during a press conference at the 2011 NAB Show in Las Vegas.

CPG will build upon the strong foundation of PACE and the 3D technology to which its co-founders have individually and collectively contributed, such as the revolutionary FUSION 3D system. In combination, Cameron’s and Pace’s technologies, products and services have been responsible for $4.7 billion of box office receipts and have played an extensive role in 25 features, seven concert and music entertainment projects and 40 sports productions worldwide, including “Avatar,” “TRON: Legacy,” “Resident Evil: Afterlife” and “U2 3D.” This history puts CPG in a unique position to respond to the growing demand for high-quality 3D entertainment and to provide 3D technology innovations that serve studios, filmmakers, directors of photography, producers, networks, studios and broadcasters. The company plans to take full advantage of its position to drive innovations in technology and deliver products, services and creative tools in unprecedented ways.

In addition to making advanced technologies, tools and services available to the global entertainment community, CPG will serve as an industry advocate for 3D technologies, practices and creative tools that will help filmmakers and other content producers realize 3D’s full potential as a creative and powerful storytelling and live broadcast medium. It will also drive public advocacy by setting the “gold standard” for the public’s perception of 3D, which will result in compelling, engaging and high quality 3D entertainment.

“Our goal is to banish all the perceived and actual barriers to entry that are currently holding back producers, studios and networks from embracing their 3D future,” said James Cameron, Co-Chairman of CAMERON – PACE Group. “We are dedicated to building a global brand that is synonymous with high quality 3D and spans multiple channels, from features to episodic television, and changes the boundaries of what is understood to be 3D material.”

“CPG’s mission is to step up industry-wide efforts to help filmmakers realize 3D’s full potential as a creative and powerful storytelling medium and accelerate the growth of the next generation of 3D solutions across all platforms,” said Vince Pace, Co-Chairman and CEO of CAMERON – PACE Group. “Through our expanded reach and new generation of 3D solutions, we will deliver a variety of creative tools including SLATE2SCREEN™ 3D production services, educational workshops for industry professionals in FUSION 3D and FUSION 3D Mobile Workflow Units that support end-to-end solutions for both the live and recorded production environments. CPG will deliver CAN DO solutions.”

CAMERON – PACE Group already has an extensive list of current and upcoming projects, including “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” “The Three Musketeers,” “The Invention on Hugo Cabret,” “Life of Pi,” and “47 Ronin.” For a more extensive list of CPG projects, as well as a comprehensive overview of CPG’s available products and services, please refer to, www.cameronpace.com.

PACE has begun the formal rebranding process and its operation under the CAMERON – PACE Group banner is effective immediately. CPG will be headquartered in Burbank, CA, at the current home to PACE. CPG is going to expand PACE’s technology impact by developing new solutions and implementing current solutions worldwide. These activities will require the company to both expand its existing staff of engineers and technicians and fill a number of newly created positions. Is this just McCord’s free time, lounge around outfit, or a preview of her Comic Con costume? You wish. Instead, it’s her wardrobe for an upcoming episode of “90210” where her character tries to seduce a nerd.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a woman in uniform, but it seems like the cleanup would be exceptionally difficult. Also, if the character of Naomi wanted to impress a nerd, all she’d really have to do would be to go up to him and say,”I am an attractive woman and you are a nerd, and I want to make out with you.” The hours of makeup (and tail attachment surgery) would just be icing.

James Cameron, the only guy with any original ideas in Hollywood, has thrown the proposed Battleship movie under the bus in a recent German interview.

James Cameron, the only guy with any original ideas in Hollywood, has thrown the proposed Battleship movie under the bus in a recent German interview, coming to us from Moviefone. In a brief rant, he chides Universal and their $200 million Battleship plans for essentially being derivative and awful. Of course, it’s possible that Universal wasn’t willing to exercise Cameron-like patience and wait around for 12 years between projects, because that’s not always a viable business model.

He stopped short of predicting it would be a nightmarish mash-up of special effects and thin plots, ’cause, you know, glass houses and whatnot, but he does go on about how Hollywood puts too much of a premium on established brands and not enough on creating new ones. He seems to (consciously or not) overlook the fact that respected helmer Peter Berg is running the Battleship circus, which throws a little more credibility behind the production of a big-budget feature based on a simplistic board game. (The fact that Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker are also on board is another story altogether.) His words may have had more gravity if he had cited a Michael Bay movie, but Transformers movies only come out every nine months or so, and Cameron didn’t want to wait that long to let his feelings be known.

Cameron summed up his point nicely, saying, “They want to make the Battleship game into a film… This is pure desperation.” Says the gentleman whose next two projects are Avatar 2 and Avatar 3.

Not only has Avatar grossed over $2.7 billion, but according to Torrent Freak, it also holds the title of most pirated film of 2010 with 16.5 million illegal downloads. If each one of those pirated movies would have brought in $10 (and that’s a conservative estimate), the film would have made an additional $165 million. That could have bought Cameron a lot of robots. Cameron pushes through a minor stroke.

We knew it was too good to be true. James Cameron has been wooed away from the 3D epic Cleopatra starring Angelina Jolie. Fox made a "huge" donation to Cameron's environmental fund in order to get him to commit to Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 as his next films.
This will tie him up through 2015 at minimum. Seeing how it takes him three years to put his shoes on, it's unlikely he'll expand the lush digital world he aims to capture. The plan as of right now is to have him start scripting early next year to get Avatar 2 in theaters by December 2014. He'll decide whether he wants to shoot the sequels back-to-back once scripting is complete. So get ready for Avatar to stay in the news cycle for a long time to come. As well as reports of Angelina Jolie kicking drums of oil into Cameron's beloved ocean. (Deadline)

James Cameron inched closer to committing to Avatar 2 at a world media event for the Blu Ray release of an extended Avatar. “Our plan is to make 2 and 3 together as a single large production and release them a year apart,” Cameron said. “It’s in progress right now. There’s a lot of writing, a lot of designing and there’s a lot of tech work that we’re going to do.”

Hasn’t he invented everything already? He should be able to just crank out more Na’Vi, but of course Cameron wants to push things further. If he’s going to make two movies together, that could take five years. He wants to anticipate technological advances five years out, so that Avatar 3 still looks fresh when it’s released.
More after the jump...

More after the jump…

“In order to do that, we have to refine our technical processes beyond the end of where we were finishin Avatar 1 a year ago. We need to future proof ourselves out five or six years to the end up the third film if you will. So we’re taking that time now. Partially because going through the process, even though we refined that process as the film went along, there were certain things we would have had to go full stop to be able to improve and upgrade. We’re in that process right now.”

That’s where Cleopatra comes in. Sony wants Cameron to do their historical epic with Angelina Jolie. Could he squeeze that in while his techies are building him new Pandora trees?

“I haven’t made any decisions about that. Here’s a decision. I’m not going to work on a film between 2 and 3. It’s really just a question of whether I do one between now and when we start 2. We’re still evaluating how much of our tech work, how much of our facility work, how long it’s going to take. So that’s not decided as of right now. I’d love to just start on Avatar 2 right now but I don’t know if that’s possible to do or if it makes sense to wait.”

Cameron also discussed bringing his feature True Lies to the small screen. Personally, the news of a True Lies TV series seemed like the best idea since "Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles." I love James Cameron’s ultimate Arnold movie, and TV seems like the way to bring it back. You’re not going to get Arnold and Jamie Lee back, and 16 years later, would you want to? But hire some hot new talent and do the future missions of Boris and Doris.

Alas, like the Terminator sequels, James Cameron’s not going back. “I’m not really doing that,” Cameron revealed during a press conference for the extended Blu Ray edition of Avatar. “That was initiated by others, friends of mine who wanted to do that. I said, ‘Yes, go with God, do True Lies but do I have to show up to do anything?’ They said, ‘Absolutely not.’”

Cameron actually wrote a script for True Lies 2 back when Arnold was still an actor and there was no need for a PATRIOT Act. After 9/11 happened, Cameron said he had no interest in a domestic comedy about terrorists. I still do though, but the new producers won’t have any access to Cameron’s rejected sequel ideas.

“[I wrote] a number of sequel scripts but I honestly don’t know. I have nothing to do with it, so if it’s great you heard it here, I had nothing to do with it. If it sucks, I had nothing to do with it.”

Looks better than East St. Louis.

Fox has released two trailers for the upcoming Avatar Extended Collector’s Edition Blu-ray, a three-volume set with 45 minutes of unused footage as well as an extended cut of the film with scenes of Earth. In the trailers, we catch a glimpse of these scenes, which seem to portray our planet as a violent, overcrowded hellhole not unlike most major cities or your average Denny’s.

Frankly, I can see why they cut the scenes. While the extended footage paints a bleak picture of Earth’s future, it’s still preferable to the brutal world of Pandora. After all, the people of future Earth look miserable, but at least they’re wearing pants and have neon signs. That’s much better than running around the jungle naked like some blue savage, trying to talk to trees. (Collider)

Catch a glimpse of Earth’s crappy future after the jump…

It was this, or a pic of Jamie Lee Curtis. No offense to Curtis, but I stand by my decision.
Director James Cameron is heading back to the small screen with a planned television adaptation of True Lies. The 1994 film, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a secret agent and Jamie Lee Curtis as his bored, unknowing wife, was a box-office hit and also garnered critical acclaim. Deadline Hollywood is reporting that the series, which is about to be shopped to the networks, will be produced by Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV.

This marks Cameron's second foray into the world of television. In 2000, he produced the Fox series "Dark Angel," which only lasted two seasons, but still managed to introduce the world to the wonders of Jessica Alba's 19-year-old ass. Here's hoping that Cameron's latest effort has as profound an impact on our society.

Claiming dominion over all things aquatic or 3D, James Cameron went all king of the world on Piranha 3D last week, and now the film's producer Mark Canton (who looks like what would happen if Phil Spector banged Albert Brooks) is showing his teeth in response. And he raises a few damn good points! Though, they are lengthy points. Here's just a few favorites, but I encourage you to check out the entire response after jump. Go on wit yo' bad self, Mark Canton:
“Mr. Cameron, who singles himself out to be a visionary of movie-making, seems to have a small vision regarding any motion pictures that are not his own. It is amazing that in the movie-making process - which is certainly a team sport - that Cameron consistently celebrates himself out as though he is a team of one. His comments are ridiculous, self-serving and insulting to those of us who are not caught up in serving his ego and his rhetoric."
Snap.
"Shame on you for thinking that genre movies and the real maestros like Roger Corman and his collaborators are any less auteur or impactful in the history of cinema than you. Martin Scorcese made Boxcar Bertha at the beginning of his career. And Francis Ford Coppola made Dimentia [sic] 13 back in 1963. And those are just a few examples of the talented and successful filmmakers whose roots are in genre films. Who are you to impugn any genre film or its creators?"
Double snap.
And now... fighting words:
“Jim, are you kidding or what? First of all, let’s start by you accepting the fact that you were the original director of PIRANHA 2 and you were fired."
(Runs around in exaggerated circle playfully slapping own face a la early Martin Lawrence)
No. He. Didn't. Don't MAKE a James Cameron take off his earrings!!
Full letter after the jump...

“As a producer in the entertainment industry, Jim Cameron’s comments on
VanityFair.com are very disappointing to me and the team that made Piranha 3D. Mr. Cameron, who singles himself out to be a visionary of movie-making, seems to have a small vision regarding any motion pictures that are not his own. It is amazing that in the movie-making process – which is certainly a team sport – that Cameron consistently celebrates himself out as though he is a team of one.
“Jim, are you kidding or what? First of all, let’s start by you accepting the fact that you were the original director of PIRANHA 2 and you were fired. Shame on you for thinking that genre movies and the real maestros like Roger Corman and his collaborators are any less auteur or impactful in the history of cinema than you. Martin Scorcese made Boxcar Bertha at the beginning of his career. And Francis Ford Coppola made Dimentia [sic] 13 back in 1963. And those are just a few examples of the talented and successful filmmakers whose roots are in genre films. Who are you to impugn any genre film or its creators?

“Having been deeply involved, as either an executive or as a producer, on Tim Burton’s original BATMAN and the first MEN IN BLACK, as well as 300, and now IMMORTALS, one of the things that has been consistent about all of the filmmakers involved in these landscape-changing global films is that, in each and every case, all of the directors were humbled by their predecessors, their colleagues and by their awareness of the great history of film that came before them. The enjoyment and the immersion of an audience in a movie theatre, as they had and will have with the above-mentioned films, and as audiences are experiencing with PIRNAHA 3D now, comes from the originality and the vision of the filmmaker, and not just from the creation of the technology. You as much as anyone certainly knows that there are many pieces to the puzzle. Going to the movies still remains, arguably, amongst the best communal experiences that human beings can share.

“My sense is that Mr. Cameron has never seen PIRANHA 3D…certainly not in a movie theatre with a real audience. Jim, we invite you to take that opportunity and experience the movie in a theatre full of fans – fans for whom this movie was always intended to entertain.

“Does Mr. Cameron have no idea of the painstaking efforts made by the talented young filmmaker Alex Aja and his team of collaborators? Clearly, and this one is a good bet, he has no clue as to how great and how much of a fun-filled experience the audiences who have seen the film in 3D have enjoyed. Those of us who have tried to stay in touch with the common movie audiences – the ones who really matter, the ones who actually still go to the theatre, put on the glasses, and eat the popcorn – take joy and pride in the fact that movies of all kinds, including PIRANHA 3D, have a place in filmmaking history – past, present and future. 3D unto itself is not a genre Jim, it is a tool that gives audiences an enhanced experience as they experience all kinds of movies. I believe Mr. Cameron did not see PIRANHA 3D either with any real audience or not at all. On opening weekend, I was in a Los Angeles theatre with a number of today’s great film makers including JJ Abrams, who actually had nothing short of the fabulous, fun 3D experience that the movie provides I am fortunate enough to have worked on, and continue to work on, evolutionary movies in all formats from just simple good story telling, which still matters most of all, to CG movies to tent-pole size 3D movies, and genre 3D movies like PIRANHA 3D.

“What it comes down to, Jim, is – that like most things in life – size doesn’t really matter. Not everyone has the advantage of having endless amounts of money to play in their sandbox and to take ten years using other people’s money to make and market a film….like you do. Why can’t you just count your blessings? Why do you have to drop Marty Scorsese’s or Tim Burton’s names, both gentlemen who I have personally worked with, and who have enjoyed great joy and success with movies of all genres and sizes well before the advent of modern 3D? Then as now, they were like kids in a candy store recognizing, far beyond your imagination, the possibilities of storytelling and originality.

“For the record, before you just totally dismiss PIRANHA 3D and all, in your opinion, worthless genre movies that actually undoubtedly gave you the ability to start your career, you should know that PIRANHA 3D had an 82% “fresh” (positive) ratting on Rotten Tomatoes on opening day – a web site that all the studios, filmmakers and the public use as a barometer of what makes a quality film.

“We know that PIRANHA 3D has not achieved a boxoffice that is on the level of many of Mr. Cameron’s successes. To date, PIRANHA 3D has earned over $30 million around the globe with #1 openings in several countries. And, as the “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes indicates, critics and many, many others have embraced and celebrated PIRANHA 3D for the fun and entertaining – and even smart – movie-going experience that it is.

“Let’s just keep this in mind Jim….you did not invent 3D. You were fortunate that others inspired you to take it further. The simple truth is that I had nothing but good things to say about AVATAR and my own experience since I actually saw it and didn’t damn someone else’s talent publicly in order to disassociate myself from my origins in the business from which we are all very fortunate. To be honest, I found the 3D in AVATAR to be inconsistent and while ground breaking in many respects, sometimes I thought it overwhelmed the storytelling. Technology aside, I wish AVATAR had been more original in its storytelling.

“We have to inspire, teach and mentor this next generation of filmmakers. It is garbage to suggest that any film or any filmmaker who cannot afford to work to your standards should be dissuaded from following his or her craft by not making 3D movies or not making movies like DISTRICT 9, for example, which probably cost the amount of AVATAR’s craft services budget, but totally rocked it in the movie theatre and in the marketplace. In that case, it was not a 3D movie. But had it been, it certainly would not have been any less original or impactful. The enormous worldwide success of AVATAR has been good in all respects for you, your financiers, your distributors and the industry, as well as for the movie going public. Jim, there is a difference between Maestro which is a word that garners respect, and Dictator or Critic which are words better left for others who are not in our mutual boat or on our team. You are one of the best, it is reasonable to think that you should dig deeper and behave like it. Young directors should be inspired by you, not publicly castigated by your mean-spirited and flawed analysis.

“While we are all awed by your talents and your box office successes – and I compliment you on all of them – why don’t you rethink how you address films with which you are not involved? You should be taking the high road that is being travelled by so many of your peers, and pulling with them to ensure that we, as an industry, will have a continuum of talented filmmakers that will deliver a myriad of motion pictures both big and small, with 3D or any other technologies yet to come that will entertain audiences throughout the world. That is the challenge that we face. That is the future that we should deliver.

“Please go see PIRANHA 3D in a theatre near you.”

Hey, everybody! James Cameron has something important to say about the dangers of using 3D technology in an inappropriate manner, so listen up!
I tend almost never to throw other films under the bus, but (Piranha 3D) is exactly an example of what we should not be doing in 3-D. Because it just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3-D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like Friday the 13th 3-D. When movies got to the bottom of the barrel of their creativity and at the last gasp of their financial lifespan, they did a 3-D version to get the last few drops of blood out of the turnip.
First of all, comparing Piranha 3D to Friday the 13th Part III is like comparing Kim Kardashian to the cast of "The View." Both are incredibly stupid, but one is still fun to watch if you're in the mood (for porn). Piranha 3D knew what it was supposed to be, and it hit the mark. Critics agree, and its Rotten Tomatoes ranking rivals that of Avatar (not that the two movies should be compared). Why should a film that is meant to be nothing more than a fun, summer gore-fest be excluded from using 3D technology? Not every 3D film needs to be a smug, ham-fisted retread of Dances with Wolves.
Second, if you want to talk about squeezing blood from a turnip, how about Avatar Special Edition, which is charging fans roughly $15 dollars to see a movie that was still in theaters less than a year ago. Oh, let's not forget the eight minutes of extra footage, which comes out to about $2 per new minute. At the end of the day, if people want to pay $15 to see Avatar again, good for Cameron. But if those same people want to pay to see fish dismembering topless girls, who is he to judge? (Vanity Fair via Movie Line)

In 30 years, wearing 'Blueface' will be considered racist.
Good news for Avatar fans! You now have a reason to live for at least three-to-four more years (besides those yearly trips to Branson with your mother).
In an interview with the New York Post, director James Cameron said he's still in the "tons of notes" stage of his production of Avatar 2, and the sequel won't be completed until at least 2014. But it may be worth the wait, since the director plans on filming the third installment at the same time.
"Right now, the thinking is that [Parts] Two and Three are going to be done together," he said. "They'll be released separately, probably a year apart or maybe even two, but they'll be done in a bunch. I'm mapping out the story line right now, so there's a proper arc that plays out over two films but buttons nicely at the end of Two, so you don't get this horrible second-act/end-of-'The Matrix' feeling."
What a jerk! The only feeling I had at the end of The Matrix Reloaded was one of pure euphoria. Granted, I watched the film on a return flight from Mexico, and a condom full of "Blanco" had ruptured in my large intestine, but still. Cameron should keep his opinions to himself.

James Cameron is saying awesome things again. I love the way he talks. He's the perfect mix of Ned Flanders and drill sergeant that will stomp your mudhole. This news may come as a big "DUUUUHHHH" but the HMFIC revealed to MTV Movies Blog his plans to include underwater filming in Avatar 2.
"I think what we should do there is -- because we'll have to have characters that are in and under the water -- is that we should actually capture them underwater. It's not the same as going diving, but I like to keep my diving, which I do for pleasure, separate from work. Diving for shooting a movie is work. Diving for exploration is a gas. I like to keep my peas and carrots separate."
Awww... doesn't he just say the darndest things? Peas and carrots. That's some Canadian charm. Go on and tell us about the re-release of Avatar, you folksy so-and-so. I want you to be my new grandpa.
"You mean the alien kink scene? It's been restored, every last frame of it. Seriously. All 20 seconds of it."
Grandpa, don't say gross stuff around my friends!! Yuck!! Gross!! He called boot-knockin' "kink". What are they teaching up there in Canada?!!

James Cameron is saying awesome things again. I love the way he talks. He’s the perfect mix of Ned Flanders and drill sergeant that will stomp your mudhole. This news may come as a big "DUUUUHHHH" but the HMFIC revealed to MTV Movies Blog his plans to include underwater filming in Avatar 2.

"I think what we should do there is — because we’ll have to have characters that are in and under the water — is that we should actually capture them underwater. It’s not the same as going diving, but I like to keep my diving, which I do for pleasure, separate from work. Diving for shooting a movie is work. Diving for exploration is a gas. I like to keep my peas and carrots separate."

Awww… doesn’t he just say the darndest things? Peas and carrots. That’s some Canadian charm. Go on and tell us about the re-release of Avatar, you folksy so-and-so. I want you to be my new grandpa.

"You mean the alien kink scene? It’s been restored, every last frame of it. Seriously. All 20 seconds of it."

Grandpa, don’t say gross stuff around my friends!! Yuck!! Gross!! He called boot-knockin’ "kink". What are they teaching up there in Canada?!!

Your story checks out, James. Let's hope you were wrong about Skynet.
If there's one thing I love in this world, it's eating a nice big meal and then heading home to drop a deuce. If there's a second thing I love, it's Avatar. That's why my head almost exploded when I saw this picture. It manages to combine my love of Avatar and my love of defecation in a humorous and timely manner.

For those of you who don't know, the photo is from Uncle John's Bathroom Reader, the Rolls-Royce of bathroom periodicals. This particular page from back in 1999 confirms James Cameron's long held assertion that he had to wait so long to make Avatar because technology had to catch up to his vision. I guess he isn't a pompous windbag after all, at least not in this instance.

Although, as someone on a comment board pointed out, this is James Cameron. He could have easily sent one of his robots back in time to add that page. (Film Drunk)

Yo James! Time to get my blue ass paid again, bitch!James Cameron spent all of his money on hookers and underwater robots. The rest he just squandered. But those robots gotta eat, and now that the famed director is officially out of cash, he needs a way to make a quick buck before he has a full-blown cyborg uprising on his hands. Enter Avatar Special Edition. For roughly $15 dollars, you can see a movie that you paid to see less than a year ago. As if that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is not enough, there are also eight minutes of never before seen footage. That's only about $2 per minute. Compare that to your average 90's phone sex hot-line, and you'll find it's a bargain. Rumor has it that all they did was add five extra steps to every running scene. That might not sound like much, but remember, it's in 3D! See the TV trailer for Avatar Special Edition after the jump...

Clappin' all night in this bitch. Thanks to better than expected DVD sales, richy-richerson James Cameron is set to earn $350 million dollars from Avatar. That's a record breaking number for a director to make from one film, and well over a thousand times more than what a blogger can earn annually for writing pithy articles about movie-making on the Internet. But that doesn't matter to me. It's really my passion for Photoshop that keeps me going. The $350 million figure far outpaces the $97 million that Cameron earned for Titanic. That number will climb, of course, when he re-releases a 3D version of Titanic later this year (after re-releasing Avatar). We need a new term to accurately describe that amount of money. It's not f*ck you money, it's f*ck the continent of Asia money. (Deadline)

Awwwwe, not again! I got greedy! In what might as well be billed as the Please Give Us $12 More Dollars Tour, James Cameron's Avatar is returning to 3D and IMAX 3D theaters on August 27th. For those of you who are skeptical about paying for the "re-release" of a film that was still in theaters six months ago, 20th Century Fox has upped the ante by adding more than eight minutes of never before seen footage! If you're paying $12 or more for a 3D ticket, that comes out to well over a dollar-per-minute of new footage. The only way I'll pay to see Avatar again is if the new material consists of Jake Sully injuring himself to the point where his Avatar is confined to a wheelchair, just like his human body. Now that's irony! (Coming Soon)
