I think Warner Bros needs an intervention. In their haste to compete with Marvel, they’re green lighting anything featuring characters in tights. Yesterday came news that Jason Momoa has been signed to play Aquaman in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and presumably the Justice League movie after that, and today comes news that Aquaman will also star in his own standalone movie.

In a move that shows their total lack of vision, the studio has hired two screenwriters to write their own unique takes on the character. Gangster Squad writer Will Beale will script one probably terrible film while 300 writer Kurt Johnstad writes the other piece of shit. Whichever one is deemed less terrible will be the movie they spend hundreds of millions of dollars on. It’s advised that Beale and Johnstad stay away from scenes involving Aquaman diving off a pier.

Jason Momoa, the large gentleman who has been tasked with playing Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones and Conan the Barbarian, is reportedly in talks to play Aquaman in Zach Snyder’s Justice League movie.

The Justice League is the DC Comics version of The Avengers, and the first film is titled Dawn of Justice. Aquaman has historically been known as the wussiest of the superheroes; a guy who can talk to dolphins and swim really fast. My guess is that Momoa would change all that by ripping people’s heads off and swimming really fast.

Nothing has been confirmed at this point, but Snyder has apparently been looking for a way to get Jason Momoa into this film, and if it means he needs a blonde wig and orange bodysuit at this point, so be it. ds

Marvel Comics has announced an initiative to further involve the comic creative teams in the production of their feature films. Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief, Joe Quesada, in response to flopped film adaptations, told Comic Book Resources, “We’d sit there going, ‘Why didn’t they hire comic book people?’ Well, that’s what Marvel is doing.”

While there is no doubt this will be great news to comic enthusiasts, as they will see more faithful adaptations of their favorite stories, it may not be seen as a boon to the movie studios or mainstream audiences. Perhaps cramming 50 years of lineage into the first installment of a superhero movie might be construed as a smidge tedious? Most moviegoers haven’t been clamoring for more faithful adaptations, but the ones that have are a pretty noisy bunch. But that doesn’t mean they’re right. The comics are still their own, but once a feature is made, a much wider market must be considered. And those people don’t so much care if Aquaman peed in the pool as a wee lad, nor how that affects his relationship with nature.

While this initiative remains nebulous at this point, we can count on seeing more Marvel creative-types in the credits of their upcoming movies. Which is probably due. Beyond that, we can expect some infighting between filmmakers and Marvel as to what’s best for the end product, so that might be entertaining.
