This Friday, the hotly anticipated summer flick Apollo 18 finally hits theaters. Of course, it’s somewhat unclear as to why this release is “hotly” anticipated, given that the studio has been remarkably tightlipped about such trivial things as the basic premise of the film. However, one thing we do know about it is that it’s a “documentary-style” film that tells the story of a big government conspiracy to hide the truth about what really happened on the Apollo 18 mission to the moon.

This, at least, should provide a little hope for movie buffs, because if there’s one thing a good suspenseful thriller needs, it’s a convoluted conspiracy. After all, no one wants to watch a movie where the government is helpful, honest and forthcoming; where giant corporations abide by the law and are unwilling to commit treason for the sake of profit; or where a race of aliens is simply “passing through,” with no intention of annihilating our species so they can take over our planet. No, we want to watch movies about villainous criminal syndicates and cabals of rich old men who secretly control the world so that, even subconsciously, our brains can think, “hah, I knew it.” Because it’s a relief to know all the crappy stuff in life is someone else’s fault.

So if Apollo 18 is any good at all, chances are it will be because there’s a good conspiracy propping up an otherwise weak premise. And if this is the case, the film will be keeping good company. There are lots of films driven, if not propped up, by ridiculously convoluted conspiracies.

Here’s a rundown of some of the most convoluted movie conspiracies of all time, so you can better appreciate where I’m coming from.

Above the Law (1988)

Movie conspiracies about covert CIA operations and corrupt police officers are a dime a dozen. So in that regard, Above the Law isn’t all that special. It’s just a movie about how the CIA is selling crack in order to finance its illegal black ops around the globe. All in all, pretty standard Hollywood material. But what really sets this conspiracy flick apart from the pack is the presence of one Mr. Steven Seagal. And his presence is required because you know the only way this CIA drug conspiracy was going to be brought down was with the help of a Chicago cop who just happens to be a former CIA agent and kung fu master.

The Game (1997)

This movie isn’t based on your typical conspiracy, its primary distinction being the fact that both the audience and the guy being conspired against are, to some extent, “in on it” the whole time.

Uberwealthy banker Nicholas Van Orton (Michael Douglass) is given a really unusual gift by his eccentric brother Conrad (Sean Penn). It’s a gift certificate for “the game.” Nick doesn’t know what the game entails, only that he must be subjected to numerous psychological and physiological tests before it can begin. But it seems the game is actually a ruse designed to get all his money. Soon Van Orton is broke and on the run, trying to figure out who the hell is trying to kill him—a typical conspiracy film scenario. Yet with this film, I really don’t want to give away to much, because I fear many people haven’t seen it. So let’s just say that, while it is a thrilling story, it’s hard to believe the premise is possible at all. (Sometimes you just have to go with it, right?)

The Manchurian Candidate (1962)

Every film buff knows the plot of this movie. A platoon of American soldiers is captured by the Soviets during the Korean war. While the soldiers are in Soviet custody, one of them is brainwashed so that, whenever he sees a queen of diamonds playing card, he will obey any order given. After a successful demonstration of the full potential of this brainwashing, the Commies release the guy so he can go back to America and be their patsy. And the worst part is, in America he’s under the control of his own mother, who is one of the real spies her Joe McCarthy-like husband is always warning his fellow Americans about. Of course, the Communist conspiracy is eventually thwarted, but not before a bunch of bad stuff goes down. As for the nature of the conspiracy itself, while I’m sure it is convenient to have secret agents doing your bidding from the heart of your enemy’s territory, I really wonder whether having a brainwashed assassin would be worth all the trouble. If you really wanted somebody dead, there’s probably an easier way. Plus, I’d take one really nasty guy in full control of his capacities over ten hypnotized assassins any day.

Apollo 18 has released its creepiest trailer yet, just days before launch. The found footage horror opens this Friday in theaters and from the looks of things, it’s going to be scary. Much like Blair Witch made you afraid of the woods and Paranormal Activity made you afraid of houses, this one will really make you wary of going to the moon. This looks a lot scarier than the crap that Tom Hanks and Bill Paxton had to deal with.

‘Apollo 18′ Trailer Is Go For Launch

What could be worse than a nice trip to the moon with some friends when all of a sudden you discover that NASA hid the real purpose of your trip, which was, of course, the investigation of moon monsters?

Nothing. Nothing would be worse than the thing I just described.

Well, Apollo 18 posits exactly that, conveying the struggle on the American astronauts using that oh-so-popular found footage technique. There isn’t a lot to glean from the theatrical trailer, other than something else is out there, and it doesn’t seem to be making their trip more pleasurable.

Moon monsters: Can’t live with ‘em, can’t acknowledge their existence for fear of government reprisal.

The astronaut horror movie Apollo 18 has been moved around more than the vegetables on a fat man’s plate, and I for one am tired of it. First it was supposed to premiere in March. Then it got moved to April. Then it got moved again to January, 2012. Now it’s back to 2011, with an August 26th release date.

Well that’s just great, Apollo 18. Did you even once stop to consider the feelings of Final Destination 5, which was also scheduled to premiere on August 26th? No, I suppose you didn’t. Now it has to move its release date up two weeks to August 12! Now when you decide to move yet again, August 26th will be a wasteland. How irresponsible can you get? (Bloody Disgusting)

With Hollywood eager to buy up science fiction pitches after the success of Battle: Los Angeles, it only makes sense that The Weinstein Company push back the release of the looks-to-have-promise Apollo 18 by eight months. Oh, wait. No. That doesn’t make sense at all.

What the hell? That trailer looked great. Did They Might Be Giants threaten litigation? Was Tom Hanks upset by the horror house portrayal of his beloved moon?? They also pushed back Piranha 3DD and added the re-titled Our Idiot Brother starring Paul Rudd and hot actresses and the Sarah Jessica Parker/Pierce Brosnan joint I Don’t Know How She Does It to the schedule.

The new release dates are as follows:

Apollo 18: January 6th, 2012

Piranha 3DD: November 23rd, 2011

Our Idiot Brother: August 26th, 2011

I Don’t Know How She Does It: Who cares?

Apollo 17 was the last official mission to the moon, supposedly due to “budgetary constraints.” Yeah, right, NASA. We all know it’s because you found aliens and didn’t want to tell us. The question is: what types of aliens. Michael Bay says they were Transformers, but we all know that’s total bullshit. So, which is it? Are there Predators? ETs? ALFs?

Watch the trailer (link above) for a look at Apollo 18, a movie in Cloverfield-esque NauseaVision that tells the story of a secret NASA flight to poke a stick at the real moon-beasts. I like the use of different cameras, from shaky handhelds to ship cameras. Looks like it could be a fun thriller, and very different from the recent murder-on-the-moon drama Moon.

Houston, you should totally get off the moon, if you want to live. The moon infection is spreading… dear god no…

The Weinstein Company is set to launch this puppy on April 22, 2011.

Check out this new poster for Apollo 18. Apparently, there’s a reason we’ve never gone back to the moon, and it has nothing to do with the fact that we’re about 14 trillion in debt.

Using the fake documentary/”found footage” technique employed by Blair Witch and Cloverfield, the film chronicles the mission on Apollo 18, a moon landing that conspiracy theorists believe secretly went ahead despite a Presidential order to stand down. Once on the moon, the crew supposedly encountered something besides rocks and craters.

In case you’re too stupid to figure it out just by looking at the poster, they found aliens. And apparently, these aliens can develop technology that travels to our moon, but they can’t develop sensible footwear. (/Film)

"A little privacy while I fill this."

Faced with the challenge of not being able to decimate any landmarks has given Roland Emmerich cold feet. It came as a surprise when the Independence Day and 2012 director signed on the direct the low-budget, “found footagealien invasion flick The Zone, given the ginormous budgets with which he’s used to working.

Shooting was slated to begin next week but now the plug has abruptly been pulled when the director’s camp commented, “This is not a project (Emmerich) is pursuing at this time.” Of course, Timur Bekmambetov‘s plans to release the similar “found footage” alien tale, Apollo 18, just a few weeks before The Zone‘s slated release date doesn’t help matters. That, and I’ve heard that the creator of The Zone Diet is really well lawyered up. (THR)
