Comic-Con 2012: Marvel Announces ‘Ant-Man’ Happening

Marvel Studios and director Edgar Wright played a little bit of a prank on the media and fans for Comic-Con this year. In the lead-up to their panel for the upcoming Iron Man 3, director Edgar Wright posted on his Twitter account about being in London and missing Comic-Con, etc. Well it turns out this was all a smokescreen to hide the fact that ahead of the Iron Man 3 panel Marvel Studios was going to show some test footage shot for Ant-Man, with Wright in attendance.

And although there’s no casting news or a release date yet, they showed the shit out of that test footage! It’s about a minute long and showed Ant-Man at ant-size taking out two full-sized henchmen with his incredible shrinking powers. So, with this test footage, plus Marvel’s online announcement that an Ant-Man movie, which we first started hearing about in 2006, is finally coming, and it looks like it’s really happening. Edgar Wright Doing A Little Bit Of Work On ‘Ant-Man’

With the film being on their production slate since the mid-2000′s, it looks like Marvel’s Ant-Man is inching closer to reality. Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World writer/director Edgar Wright has just finished shooting a test reel for the film. Though this is a far cry from an actual film, it will give Wright a good idea of how to eventually pull off the look and tone of the film which he’s co-written with Attack the Block’s Joe Cornish. These tests will also help establish a way to make Ant-Man‘s powers look convincing on-screen.

There’s also hopes that a Wright-directed Ant-Man clip will be the after-the-credits Easter Egg attached to next year’s Iron Man 3.

With Marvel slated to make a big announcement about their secret film project at Comic-Con, this test reel news only adds to the speculation. However, Latino Review have reported that Guardians of the Galaxy have been chosen for Marvel’s 2014 release. Just last month, the website reported that Black Panther would be the mystery film on Marvel’s slot. Those reports were debunked. So take the Guardians report with a grain of salt. We won’t really know until Comic-Con whether or not Latino Review are correct or once again totally full of beans.

Edgar Wright Starts Up Again on ‘Ant-Man’

Edgar Wright, director of Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim Vs The World has resumed work on his screenplay for a movie about the under-appreciated Marvel super-hero Ant-Man after break of more than two years. Much of that break was spent on Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, another comic book property, albeit not one as big or franchise-driven as a Marvel super-hero. Although as Marvel super-heroes go, Ant-Man is going to be pretty…small (GET IT EVERYONE??). Wright: “This one’s not about about the urgency of summer tentpoles and things going into production without a script. It’s slightly different than that. ” Anyway, funny super-heroes are in now, what with Iron Man and everything, especially if The Green Hornet does well financially this week. The question now is how involved Wright’s Ant-Man will be in that whole overarching mythology thing Marvel is trying — maybe Scott Pilgrim will get to joi The Avengers eventually? (24 Frames)

For those not in the know and too lazy to look it up, Ant-Man is a scientist who shrinks down to tiny size and controls the thoughts of ants via a special helmet. Yeah. Pretty dumb. So why is Edgar Wright making a movie about this? He undoubtedly has a golden touch, but can he turn Ant-Man into something watchable? Turns out, he hasn’t given it too much thought.

I haven’t actually started the second draft yet–I’m not going to be able to until this film [Scott Pilgrim] is out–but what we wrote for the first draft, and what Marvel really liked, is that it’s funny, but it’s a genre film. It’s about the level of comedy that Iron Man has. The idea is to make a high-concept genre film where it’s within another genre. His suit and its power is the big gadget and it takes place in the real world. I just wanted to do something that was slightly different than the superhero origin film. I felt that between that and the various mad scientist, crazy doctor films that we’ve all seen, this would be a way into an origin that was slightly different. I’m not really a multi-tasker–I haven’t done anything since Marvel liked our first draft.

Word on the street is that Wright’s first draft is amazing. I still think it’s pretty dumb. Ants are really non-threatening unless you’re planning to commit some kind of picnic-based heist. Or if you’re lackadaisical when it comes to guarding your pee hole. And if that’s the case, maybe you’re just not well-suited for a life of crime. (Box Office Magazine)
