Ant-Man star Evangeline Lilly told Buzzfeed that while Edgar Wright’s interpretation of Ant-Man would have been both fun to make and to watch, it would have “stuck out like a sore thumb,” from the other films in the Marvel Universe.

She claimed that it was more of an “Edgar Wright-meets-old school comics” film than a Marvel film. And considering the continuity and consistency of the Marvel Universe is probably bullet point #1 for the studio, Wright likely walked away rather than be given notes and agendas, especially considering he co-writes much of what he shoots.

Now, Ant-Man gets Peyton Reed, the guy behind The Break-Up and Bring It On. At what price universe, Marvel? AT WHAT PRICE YOUR PRECIOUS UNIVERSE?

At least there’s Paul Rudd. Marvel can’t take that away from us. Unless they kill him off. Which they wouldn’t do. Unless it was for the good of the universe.

AHHHHH!!!!!

Since we all love Paul Rudd (don’t be contrarian on this one), let’s all treat a silly yearbook photo of him as news as we head into the dregs of the news cycle during this Holiday week. People have already started mainlining gravy and mumbling the word “football” over and over, so the studios have pretty much put the kibosh on anything until next Monday. Unless it’s bad news. Then we’ll get it Friday.

But until Monday or Friday, we’re gonna have to create our own news.

So here you go. I give you…news:

(Unsurprisingly, we can credit Reddit for this find.)

Everyone loves Paul Rudd. And everyone loves superhero costumes. (Shut up. Yes they do.) So it stands to reason that everyone will LOVE this Marvel Avengers and Ant-Man sneak peak that allows us to bear witness to Paul Rudd laying eyes on the Ant-Man costume.

That’s what Marvel has reduced us to. Quivering, petty people who get excited about a three-second shot of a Marvel character looking at something. Congratulations, Marvel.

You also get a somewhat muscular Paul Rudd listening intently to a scientist-type guy.

So, whether you like people looking at clothes, or people listening to scientists, there’s something in this clip for everyone.

Oh, and in case you, for some weird reason, DON’T love Paul Rudd, then maybe you can enjoy The Avengers portion of this sneak peek, which offers up a bunch of Downey and Renner.

You hear that? RENNER!

In order to prove that they can still totally make their premiere date despite losing the film’s director, Marvel has released this first promotional still of Paul Rudd in Ant-Man. Notice that I didn’t say as Ant-Man. Filming has just started and they probably haven’t gotten around to those parts yet. Just these scenes were Paul Rudd is dressed like Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Here he stands beneath San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge with something like disgust in his eyes. Maybe a bunch of ants crawling all over an ice cream sandwich because that’s always a bummer to see and it’s not like you can just wash it off?

Thanks to Comic-Con, the prospect of seeing Paul Rudd sarcastically mouth-off to an ant feels that much closer. Marvel had some trouble getting Ant-Man out of the gate but now we have a first look at the film. In hand-drawn poster form.

The poster by artist Andy Park confirms suspicions that the film will feature Ant-Man riding an ant and Paul Rudd will make that face he makes before he infers that someone or something is gay.

The Ant-Man drama has been put to rest, it would seem. A couple weeks after Edgar Wright stepped off the project, HIS project, abruptly, Marvel was scrambling to find a new helmer who could take Wright’s vision and run with it. After knocking on the door of comedy director Adam McKay, who turned the project down, the studio has found their director in Peyton Reed.

Reed doesn’t exactly follow Wright’s cults sensibilities, as he’s been the force behind broader comedies such as The Break-Up, Yes Man, and Bring It On. However, that doesn’t mean he CAN’T do it. Just that he hasn’t done anything similar yet. Also, though Adam McKay backed out due to prior conflicts, he’ll still be hanging around in an uncertain consulting role, so that’s pretty good news.

Edgar Wright’s disappearance from his own labor of love is still a little confusing, though, and any director who isn’t Edgar Wright is going to feel like a compromise on this one.

It was announced last week that Anchorman director Adam McKay was on the shortlist to direct Ant-Man in the wake of Edgar Wright‘s leaving the project. Now that list is even shorter as McKay removed himself from the negotiations after moving pretty far along in talks with Marvel. Citing that he’s too busy at the moment to film scenes of Paul Rudd swimming in a toilet, although he’d love to get to that should there ever be an Anchorman 3.

The shortlist also included We’re the Millers director Rawson Marshall Thurber and the just terrible Ruben Fleischer. It’s unknown if they’re still in the mix now that Marvel revealed their favorite was McKay. We will keep you posted when this important film is eventually reassigned. (THR)

Edgar Wright, the man behind the cult faves Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, has lef this pet project Ant-Man just a short time before filming was to begin.

The little-known Marvel property had been championed by Wright for years, and garnered more intrigue after it had been announced that Paul Rudd was to play the superhero.

However, due to the catch-all “creative differences,” Wright has walked off, amicably, if a press release is to be believed. The cast is currently set to stay, and while the studio behind the film, Marvel, can find a new director, it’s unlikely they’ll be able to replicate his playful reverence or the cult cache that he brings to the project.

But no doubt they’ll try.

In an effort to prove Paul Rudd can appear onscreen without Elizabeth Banks or Rashida Jones, Marvel is in talks to cast LOST’s Evangeline Lilly as the female lead in Ant-Man. The studio won’t comment on exactly who she’ll be playing but have mentioned this would not be a one-off appearance. Speculation is that she’ll play the daughter of Michael Douglas’s Hank Pym and love interest to Rudd who is probably an attractive entomologist or the character who will eventually become The Wasp.

Earlier it was reported that Jones was being looked at for this role. However, it seems that casting did not take shape despite her friendship with Rudd. Maybe he can still get her in there as the voice of a plucky caterpillar or something. (THR)

The news that Paul Rudd was cast as Ant-Man now seems a little premature. Yes, he will star in the film Ant-Man in the role of Ant-Man, however, he won’t be playing the Ant-Man we expected him to play. That role is actually going to Michael Douglas.

For those whose heads aren’t aching by my eleqountly worded introduction, Douglas will play Hank Pym, brilliant scientist/original Ant-Man. Rudd will play Scott Lang, thief who steals the technology and eventually uses it to become a hero. Edgar Wright has said in past interviews that the film will jump between the 1960′s and present day, showing both Pym and Lang as the miniaturized hero. There’s no word who will play the young version of Michael Douglas. Maybe Emilio Estevez is available. (Marvel)

Joseph Gordon-Levitt was also up for the role of Hank Pym, the scientist who can shrink himself and talk to insects, but denied the rumors almost immediately. In a tremendous blow to fans of hyphenate synergies, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has completely and utterly insisted that the announcement by Variety that the Ant-Man lead was down to Paul Rudd and JG-L as “lies.” More specifically, he said that any story of his involvement in the Edgar Wright superhero film was a lie; he didn’t speak for Paul Rudd, because NO ONE speaks for Paul Rudd except Paul Rudd.

And maybe Judd Apatow. Or Leslie Mann if Apatow isn’t around. But NOT JG-L.

Does this mean that Paul Rudd is Ant-Man. I dunno. Maybe? The idea of Edgar Wright directing Paul Rudd in a huge-budget summer movie sounds pretty damn sexy, so let’s hope so.

That’s all the update we got, so let’s just spend the next ten seconds or so imagining Paul Rudd preparing for the role by staring closely at an ant farm, and ruining people’s picnics at Griffith Park to get in the right headspace for the role.

Just like that old parable from the Bible where a mom is tasked with seeing her baby cut in half, Marvel Studios too has to choose. The studio and Edgar Wright have narrowed their two top choices to play Ant-Man and they’re both pretty likeable guys who never hurt you in anyway. Oof. This one’s going to be tough.

Paul Rudd and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are both up for the part, as well as “a remote possibility another actor could emerge” to take the role for less of Marvel’s money. But he’d better be damn likeable.

From the outset, I’ve seen Gordon-Levitt in this role but the idea of Rudd also interests me. Though his alternating sarcasm and mumbling comedy schtick has grown grating in the past five or so years, a cool film like this could be just the jolt he needs to keep it fresh. I’m still on Team JGL but could also be okay with James Franco or Michael Cera in the role. They’ll all be equally hysterical when shrunken down and trapped in some lady’s cleavage. (Variety)

Edagar Wright has long been circling the offbeat comic film Ant-Man, and after getting word that the project will go through, we’re now hearing that the project will be pushed up to summer 2015, putting it against Superman vs. Batman during that same period.

If Ant-Man is going to have as big a budget as one would expect, the move to summer is no surprise, and if it’s going to stay in the style of Wright’s previous Cornetto Trilogy, then there’s little risk of these two films stepping on each other’s toes. Similarly, The Avengers: Age of Ultron is coming out in May of that year, but that just puts Ant-Man further in the position to be the “alternative” superhero film of that summer.

Marvel Studios and director Edgar Wright played a little bit of a prank on the media and fans for Comic-Con this year. In the lead-up to their panel for the upcoming Iron Man 3, director Edgar Wright posted on his Twitter account about being in London and missing Comic-Con, etc. Well it turns out this was all a smokescreen to hide the fact that ahead of the Iron Man 3 panel Marvel Studios was going to show some test footage shot for Ant-Man, with Wright in attendance.

And although there’s no casting news or a release date yet, they showed the shit out of that test footage! It’s about a minute long and showed Ant-Man at ant-size taking out two full-sized henchmen with his incredible shrinking powers. So, with this test footage, plus Marvel’s online announcement that an Ant-Man movie, which we first started hearing about in 2006, is finally coming, and it looks like it’s really happening. With the film being on their production slate since the mid-2000′s, it looks like Marvel’s Ant-Man is inching closer to reality. Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World writer/director Edgar Wright has just finished shooting a test reel for the film. Though this is a far cry from an actual film, it will give Wright a good idea of how to eventually pull off the look and tone of the film which he’s co-written with Attack the Block’s Joe Cornish. These tests will also help establish a way to make Ant-Man‘s powers look convincing on-screen.

There’s also hopes that a Wright-directed Ant-Man clip will be the after-the-credits Easter Egg attached to next year’s Iron Man 3.

With Marvel slated to make a big announcement about their secret film project at Comic-Con, this test reel news only adds to the speculation. However, Latino Review have reported that Guardians of the Galaxy have been chosen for Marvel’s 2014 release. Just last month, the website reported that Black Panther would be the mystery film on Marvel’s slot. Those reports were debunked. So take the Guardians report with a grain of salt. We won’t really know until Comic-Con whether or not Latino Review are correct or once again totally full of beans.

Edgar Wright, director of Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim Vs The World has resumed work on his screenplay for a movie about the under-appreciated Marvel super-hero Ant-Man after break of more than two years. Much of that break was spent on Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, another comic book property, albeit not one as big or franchise-driven as a Marvel super-hero. Although as Marvel super-heroes go, Ant-Man is going to be pretty…small (GET IT EVERYONE??). Wright: “This one’s not about about the urgency of summer tentpoles and things going into production without a script. It’s slightly different than that. ” Anyway, funny super-heroes are in now, what with Iron Man and everything, especially if The Green Hornet does well financially this week. The question now is how involved Wright’s Ant-Man will be in that whole overarching mythology thing Marvel is trying — maybe Scott Pilgrim will get to joi The Avengers eventually? (24 Frames)

Yeah. Pretty dumb. So why is Edgar Wright making a movie about this? He undoubtedly has a golden touch, but can he turn Ant-Man into something watchable? Turns out, he hasn't given it too much thought.I haven’t actually started the second draft yet–I’m not going to be able to until this film [Scott Pilgrim] is out–but what we wrote for the first draft, and what Marvel really liked, is that it’s funny, but it’s a genre film. It’s about the level of comedy that Iron Man has. The idea is to make a high-concept genre film where it’s within another genre. His suit and its power is the big gadget and it takes place in the real world. I just wanted to do something that was slightly different than the superhero origin film. I felt that between that and the various mad scientist, crazy doctor films that we’ve all seen, this would be a way into an origin that was slightly different. I’m not really a multi-tasker–I haven’t done anything since Marvel liked our first draft.Word on the street is that Wright's first draft is amazing. I still think it's pretty dumb. Ants are really non-threatening unless you're planning to commit some kind of picnic-based heist. Or if you're lackadaisical when it comes to guarding your pee hole. And if that's the case, maybe you're just not well-suited for a life of crime. (Box Office Magazine)

Edgar Wright considers casting Vin Diesel.

For those not in the know and too lazy to look it up, Ant-Man is a scientist who shrinks down to tiny size and controls the thoughts of ants via a special helmet. Yeah. Pretty dumb. So why is Edgar Wright making a movie about this? He undoubtedly has a golden touch, but can he turn Ant-Man into something watchable? Turns out, he hasn’t given it too much thought.
