Fox’s plan to use shameless crossovers and gimmicks to maintain the relevance of its animated shows appears to be working, at least in the near-term. 5 minutes of the Family Guy-Simpsons crossover was released at Comic-Con on Friday, and it’s got people…interested.

The event, which is technically the hour-long Family Guy premiere with an appearance from The Simpsons, has been hyped shamelessly by Fox. But the fact that this thing is getting traction, lots of media attention, and, judging by the clip, a few laughs, could mean good things for the two aging shows.

Well, if not “good things,” then at least “not-so-bad things.”

‘Allen Gregory’ Did So Poorly Last Night That Fox Bought Some More Eps Of ‘Bob’s Burgers’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/allen-gregory-did-so-poorly-last-night-that-fox-bought-some-more-eps-of-bobs-burgers/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/allen-gregory-did-so-poorly-last-night-that-fox-bought-some-more-eps-of-bobs-burgers/#comments Mon, 31 Oct 2011 18:34:26 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=234390 That weird guy that really likes 'Bob's Burgers' will be thrilled.

“Fire up the grill!” and some more such metaphors! Bob’s Burgers will be getting an additional nine episodes in its second season. Fox announced today that, in the wake of Allen Gregory’s limp debut, that it will be picking up Bob’s Burgers for 22 episodes, rather than the original order of 13, as if to say, “We’ve already got a whole stable of cartoons with lukewarm audiences, Allen Gregory.”

The Jonah Hill-produced Gregory debuted last night between Family Guy and The Simpsons Halloween Special, but failed to rake in more than a 4.7 share, which is apparently a disappointment, even though The Simpsons scored a 4.0 and Family Guy a 3.2.

Huh. Weirdly enough, someone at Fox this morning probably addressed a group sitting around a coffee table and said, “This show isn’t drawing enough viewers. We need a show that more people will watch. Like Bob’s Burgers.”

All hail Bob’s Burgers.

Tornados have devastated the South, killing 300 people in their wake. Far less important: Fox is postponing new episodes of their animated series because of it. I think we’ll all manage just fine.

Due to national sensitivity about the storms, Fox is holding off on airing special crossover episodes of “Family Guy,” “American Dad” and “The Cleveland Show” until next season. The story device that brings all the universes together is a hurricane, so I can see how that would be in poor taste. Then again,”Family Guy” has aired lengthy musical numbers about people contracting AIDS and teenagers abandoning their babies in a dumpster, so I wouldn’t call Seth MacFarlane and Fox, “America’s Most Sensitive Content Team.”

I like that they’re employing the far-under utilized TV crossover gimmick, though these shows have all overlapped several times in the past. At least, “Family Guy” has with the other two. Now, if there was a “Simpsons” / MacFarlaneverse crossover, with some “Bob’s Burgers” sprinkled in,¬†you’d have my very valuable attention. (Deadline)
