Today’s the last day to party balls before getting wrapped up in all this Lent hogwash, so make it count. Might I suggest some sort of party, as they enjoy so much in New Orleans?

Taking inventory of parties in film is pretty much a step-by-step guide on how to throw a good party, but planning isn’t enough. The greatest parties in film and in our lives thrive on an intangible spontaneity that not even Martha Stewart could curate. Catching that lightning in a bottle, be it an impromptu beer bust, a sociopathic athlete, or a girl dying of a cocaine overdose, is the key to taking a party from good to great. I could prattle on about this, but the examples serve to do most of the heavy lifting here.

The House Party in Any Given Sunday

I’m guessing that Oliver Stone drew from the Dallas Cowboys parties of lore when he conceived this scene that is decadent enough to make Charlie Sheen blush. This party has tons of whorish women, athletes in silk shirts talking on cell phones, and, of course, sharks.

This scene is only later trumped by the one in which Lawrence Taylor’s character cuts Steamin’ Willie Beamen’s yellow Tahoe in half with a buzzsaw. Hmmm. Sharks or cars being cut in half? That’s a choice truly worthy of Solomon.

House Party 2’s Pajama Jammy Jam

Not every party on this list has to be depraved. Sometimes, you just want to kick back with some friends in your PJ’s, hang out with some non-threatening black dudes, and innocently pursue chaste women. It’s pretty much like a seventh-grade mixer. No. It’s exactly like a seventh-grade mixer, only with more high-top fades than I remember.

This party trades in safety. You’re not going to OD or get stabbed at this party. You might lose a dance-off, but rest assured that the winner will graciously give you a friendly eleven-step handshake and a hug when it’s all over. Having Martin Lawrence in attendance is a wild card nowadays, but back then the only way he would cause any trouble is if you kept bumping his DJ table.

If you’re worried about whether or not these guys gonna hurt nobody, let me save you some time – they ain’t gonna hurt nobody.

Many college-educated movie characters have more than the burdens of double secret probation on their minds.

President Obama recently announced a student loan forgiveness program that is being met with mixed reactions. The program would affect a measure that Congress has already passed. The revised plan would cap payments at 10 percent of discretionary income and any remaining debt after 20 years would be forgiven. Of course, there’s fear that people will take advantage of it.

But what about the people who really need it? People like Ogre from Revenge of the Nerds. He can’t be having too good of a go of it right now.

Here are ten characters deserving of student loan debt forgiveness.

Ben Braddock – The Graduate

Ban Braddock left college feeling uninspired and unaware of his place in the world. One of the top keys to success is a solid and well thought-out five-year plan. Lacking direction and desire for the career path can make paying bills a difficulty. He’ll definitely need some help from Uncle Sam if he doesn’t find his way.

Monty Kessler – With Honors

Monty Kessler thought that he’d made it when he was accepted to Harvard. However, acceptance is one thing. Graduating is another. Though a very hard working student, Monty’s thesis was stolen by a homeless Joe Pesci. Without a thesis, his shot at an Ivy League degree will go up in smoke. Leaving him with nothing but expensive tuition fees.

Lara Holleran – The Rules of Attraction

Thanks to her overprivileged upbringing, Lara will be well-off financially after school. But did she really get a proper education? She spent most of her college time experimenting with sex, drugs, and drink. Let’s be clear, I’m not saying I don’t condone that behavior. Okay. I’ll admit it. She made the list because she’s hot. She doesn’t deserve any help.

In an interview with MTV, Judd Apatow spills the beans that his upcoming film Funny People will include scenes and "marketing materials" for a bunch of fake movies in which Adam Sandler’s character George Simmons stars.

It’s a conceit that worked really well in Tropic Thunder, with the inspired trailers for such high concept spoofs as Scorcher, The Fatties: Fart 2 and Satan’s Alley (all three of which you can see after the jump, along with a short list of faux-films within the world of Funny People.

Films within Funny People, all starring George Simmons (Sandler):

Mistake: a romantic comedy co-starring Elizabeth Banks

My Best Friend is a Robot: a buddy comedy co-starring Owen Wilson, which you can look for as a poster in Sandler’s character’s house.

Redux: Judd Apatow calls this as a cross between Little Man and 17 Again, as Sandler becomes a six-month-old baby in it.

Mer-man: A male version of Splash with Sandler’s character filling Darryl Hannah‘s fins
