Don’t you hate how there aren’t any good comedies set in the colonial period? Yeah, you do. Even if you didn’t even know you did. AMC sure does, and that’s (presumably) why they’re stepping out with We Hate Paul Revere, one such comedy that follows two guys who sure do hate Paul Revere.

Of course, it would have been fairly predictable for AMC to cast some d-bag in the role of Paul Revere, like one of the Workaholics, or maybe Ed Helms. Nope. They got one of the more likable people in the world, Ron Livingston, to play Paul Revere.

Why do those two guys hate Paul Revere so much? Especially if he’s played by affable everyman Ron Livingston? Maybe they’re jerks. Or maybe Paul Revere is a jerk. Sometimes people just don’t get along. It’s not necessarily a testament to their personalities. Whatever.

Just watch the show. It’s rare that networks take such a high-concept risk that doesn’t sound stupid right off the back. With any luck, we’ll ALL be hating Paul Revere for years to come.

When all else fails, go to Netflix. And apparently, all else had failed The Killing, which was cancelled by AMC after season one, then brought back, then cancelled again and so on. The Killing really copped out pretty hard by not providing any closure as to who the guilty party was at the end of the first season, and it pissed fans off.

But I guess as those fans left, new ones stepped up, because Netflix has offered to take on season four this time around. Tune in starting on August 1st.

And here’s the trailer. It seems as though the cops did something bad…

We need Breaking Bad. In the absence of actual new Breaking Bad episodes, which seem very, very unlikely, we were willing to satisfy ourselves with Better Call Saul, the Breaking Bad spinoff that we just learned has been delayed for about six months, BUT also picked up for two seasons.

So that’s for the future. WHAT ABOUT NOW?

Well, now AMC, realizing that we need something to get us through, and they’re plum out of Better Call Saul casting announcements, has gone ahead with a Breaking Bad marathon that will start on August 10th, then air marathon episodes on Sundays until the finale in October. The marathon will also be sprinkled with interviews and behind-the-scenes stuff that Netflix won’t give you.

Aside from that “bonus” this is very little that you can’t get from Netflix at literally any time.

In case you thought that The Walking Dead was going to stop airing any time soon, think again. Producer David Alpert sat down in an interview and revealed he has thoughts for a tenth season arc, and a twelfth season arc. Nothing’s certain, but the show seems to be building steam later in its run, so I would put the prospect at “likely.”

We’re currently about to enter season five this fall, so we’re not even at the halfway point. This prospect should make AMC giddy, as the program is smashing records for cable ratings, and has warranted its own talk show (Chris Hardwick’s The Talking Dead) and a spin-off that is taking shape.

So, if you thought maybe this whole zombie thing was going to get resolved halfway through this upcoming season, then the whole gang goes out for smoothies, you’re probably long. Unless the “going out for smoothies” plot stretches out for seven seasons. But hey, this is The Walking Dead, so they’ve spent similar amounts of time on equally trivial pursuits.

A show like Mad Men never really seems to half-ass anything, with every little detail labored upon. So it should come as little surprise that while most TV studios were sending out those “Burn Notice for your consideration for Best Series!” flyers and ads, Mad Men took a different tact.

They put together a portfolio of self-referential ads to get their point across, and did so all in the vernacular of the shows ad firm. The results are pretty great and very clever. Take a look:

Better Call Saul is underway in New Mexico, meaning that it’s likely that the proposed November premiere date is attainable and realistic, which in turn means that this isn’t some cruel hoax dreamt up by AMC and Vince Gilligan to taunt us with a return to the Breaking Bad universe.

So we’ve got the script pic, and a pic of a skatepark.

BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

I dunno. Maybe the script is so weak that they’ve turned to a Bam Margera skateboarding cameo in the first episode. If so, ick. But more than likely, Saul will just be dicking around at some skatepark with the scum of the earth.

Or maybe they take the sitcom route, and that Huell and Saul are good friends until one day Saul bets Huell that Huell can’t land a 540 fakie McTwist. Huell comes up a bit short on the landing, and because he lost the bet, he now has to be Saul’s henchman.

Or whatever. Here’s the pic:

Lest you think that some level of activity on Twitter will change the course of events for fictional characters living 40 years in the past, think again. With the first half of Mad Men‘s final season in the bag, showrunner Matt Wiener has been making the rounds, and he’s said that nothing anyone can do will change the course of events for the show in the final eight episodes.

Now, we can read into that innocuous statement all we want and scream, “WHAT IS HE FORESHADOWING? WHAT WOULD WE WANT TO CHANGE? DOES SALLY DIE?”

But we’re not gonna, because it’s pointless and won’t change a thing. Just like voting in a democratic election.

He also assured us that there won’t be any spinoffs or sequels. So if you were looking to Better Call Meredith! to get your fix of the SCDP crew, think again. It’s not going to happen, though we’d all like to know how Meredith spends her down time. Probably staring at a wall quietly.

AMC has had a large enough roster of success recently (no thanks to Low Winter Sun), that they can afford to go in some different directions. And I would certainly consider a period piece drama about a shady doctor who steals people’s organs to be a “different direction.”

So enters Knifeman, the awesomely-named show that is based on the John Hunter biography The Knife Man: Blood, Body Snatching And The Birth Of Modern Surgery.

The best thing this should could have done is combine Knife Man into one word. Sexy.

John Hunter will be portrayed as an arrogant, charming surgeon, which sounds pretty trite, but whatever. I don’t want to see a demure, awkward surgeon. If I wanted to do that, I would just head down to the emergency care place on Fairfax. The staff there is so weird.

Many have failed in trying to adapt Preacher, including Kevin Smith, DJ Caruso, and Sam Mendes. I never would have thought that Seth Rogen would succeed where Sam Mendes failed, but here we are.

Preacher tells the story of a man who becomes inhabited by the wills of both an angel and a demon, while getting empowered as an almost God-like being. The story takes place in Texas and…

Darabont, who has been outspoken about his ousting from the show by network execs (supposedly), had been quiet until he started bombing around doing interviews for LA Noir, at which point reporters knew what people REALLY wanted to know about.

In case the point wasn’t made then, it’s being made now. With a lawsuit alleging that AMC never paid Darabont for his profits interest in the successful show, meaning that they owe him tens of millions of dollars.

More specifically, this claims that AMC uses an unrealistic licensing fee amount to show the program is barely, or not, profitable.

AMC, a network known for giving shows a death sentence, then offering them a last-minute reprieve (though it probably won’t in this case because seemingly no one enjoyed Low Winter Sun), has given the Detroit cop drama the ax after one season.

All the grittiness in the world couldn’t save the at-times-illogical show that seemingly ran circles around viewers for no good reason. It also failed to capitalize on Breaking Bad‘s enormous lead-in, and fell completely flat once the acclaimed series aired.

The good news is that there’s only so much Sunday night to go around, especially considering it doesn’t just belong to HBO anymore. So this clears up thirteen Sunday slots for a newer, better show, possibly one involving a morally ambiguous attorney in the American Southwest? That could be pretty cool.

The Walking Dead has enjoyed an immense amount of success, so, knowing AMC’s delight in spinning off shows and talk shows from original successes, it’s no surprise that they’re toying with another Walking Dead. If rumor is to be believed, it’s a prequel of sorts, shedding some light on the initial outbreak and the efforts to contain it.

The series won’t appear until 2015, so there’s always a chance that we could enjoy a real-life zombie outbreak before the show starts, which would render this whole endeavor moot. It would also render us all dead, which would be disappointing, but only because we wouldn’t be able to see that Walking Dead prequel that AMC was so excited about.

AMC, after canceling The Killing twice, realized that its forces couldn’t be stopped, so the best strategy was just to let it keep airing in an unpopulated area. Enter Netflix.

Netflix, which partnered with AMC to bring back the show for a second season, will now be the sole distribution channel for the program (unless some weirdo wants to buy the DVDs).

I don’t know what the fourth season will be about, but I doubt it’s about who killed that girl in the first episode, because if it is…ugh. That’s a slow-developing story, even by AMC standards. The final season will be six episodes, so that’s rather merciful.

I think a Laura Palmer zombie is probably the only thing that can save this.

AMC, who has a bit of success in the comic book/graphic novel-adaptation department with The Walking Dead, is looking to to parlay their good fortune here with another adaptation, this time of a gritty, cartoonish Western, called Preacher.

And just in case fortune doesn’t smile on them, they’ve got Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg in to develop it. That won’t hurt. Rogen took to Twitter saying that “Looks like seven years of hard work is about to pay off.” He then rattled off some Preacher characters on his Tweet, allowing fanboys to pick up the scent.

No word on confirmation from AMC’s end, let alone a possible air date, but as we all know, Twitter serves as a legally binding contract, so Seth Rogen will have to make good on his promise or face decades of jail time.

Even the president of AMC himself was bored with the news. Charlie Collier, through a release said, “We are very happy to make what has to be one of the most anti-climactic renewal announcements ever:  The Walking Dead is renewed for a fifth season.”

Hahaha. See? They’re having fun with it. I bet that company OWNS casual Friday. Dockers and Tommy Bahama everywhere.

Don’t get me wrong, I love arm wrestling as much as the next guy (provided the next guy doesn’t care for arm wrestling all that much), but it’s a strange trajectory for AMC, the network behind good shows like Mad Men, The Walking Dead (sorta), and the defunct Breaking Bad, seems to have taken a schizophrenic step with King of Arms, a reality show about regulars on the arm wrestling circuit.

I’m doing myself a disservice by urging readers not to confuse the title with Radiohead’s most recent album King of Limbs, because I think it would be hilarious if people transposed an arm wrestling reality show with a really, really serious rock record.

It’s unlikely this show will take some subversive or odd look at the world, considering the producers behind Deadliest Catch are behind it. But I’m not better than a reality show about arm wrestling, and if it steps in to Low Winter Sun‘s timeslot, then all the better.

As for the name of this majestic development, it will be the Oriental Movie Metropolis, which I’m sure doesn’t sound quite so lame in its native tongue. It’s projected to cost about $6 billion, and has been announced to open in 2017.

For the many of us who fear that two more hours (minus commercials) isn’t nearly enough time to get us to wherever we need to be at the end of Breaking Bad, heres some solace: We’ll have an extra thirty minutes to get there, thanks to Vince Gilligan adding 15 minutes to each episode.

Will that be enough time to flush out some huge conspiracy taking place right before our eyes, or to allow redemption for the remaining villains? Eh, probably not. But it will allow for a little more crying, screaming, desperation, and some unwelcome violence.

Maybe the extra runtime will help account for the six months we’ve seen in flash forwards. Or maybe there’s absolutely nothing the show can do that will satisfy us and keep us from remembering that it’s going to be gone forever.

AMC has announced today that it reached an agreement with Sony Television to license the Saul Goodman spinoff from Breaking Bad, and the word on the street is that it’s a prequel. The show hasn’t technically been ordered yet, but they’re probably just waiting to deal us some really harsh blow in the next weeks of Breaking Bad, then smooth things over with the announcement.

Unfortunately, the prequel revelation does NOTHING to give certainty to the fate of Saul in a Breaking Bad context, so we can all assume that Walter White shoots him with that huge gun, then dumps ricin in the wounds in a macabre twist.

Or he’s fine.

Some other things that are (and aren’t) mentioned:

  • The prequel will be an “evolution” of the character, so he might start off as a normal, non-slimy, non-awesome person. Vince Gilligan LOVES evolutions of star characters.
  • The show will be an hour long, and not the thirty minute comedy that had been rumored a couple months back.
  • It’s not mentioned if Vince Gilligan will be as involved in this as he is in Breaking Bad. It would be great to have him on board creatively, but the world may require his authorship on another, non-prequel project.
  • LITERALLY NO MENTION OF HUELL. He’s probably in the bathroom. He’s got a stomach thing.
  • Its working title is Better Call Saul. No shit.

One might look at the subject of this headline and think, “Huh. Slow news day.” Nope. However trivial, this story focuses on two of my favorite things, billionaires and Breaking Bad, so that story on the Pacific Rim sequel is just going to have to live by the wayside.

In this Buzzfeed story, we learn that Buffett isn’t just a fan, but went so far as to make a sketch with Bryan Cranston that supposes that Buffett’s investment in See’s Candies is just a front for a meth operation. This was for his annual shareholder meeting, which means that Warren Buffett might be a bigger badass than Walter White himself.

In the story, Buffett praises White’s business acumen, which is sort of like saying that the Nazis used a beautiful color palette for their uniforms.

Eh. With such a fanboy oriented show as The Walking Dead, the idea of spending a half hour fawning over what the audience just saw makes a bit of sense, but the bar for the level of discourse remains pretty low with that show. “Zombies are awesome. People killing zombies is awesome. Ergo, The Walking Dead is awesome.”

Breaking Bad mires itself in nuance which is why these immediate retrospectives are inessential, and any looks forward would be unwanted.

Nonetheless, interest in Breaking Bad will reach a fever pitch, so why not try to capture 30% of the audience with a program about what they just saw? It’s innocuous enough, but this news reinforces the feeling that Breaking Bad is a show that deserves academic dissertations and journal articles, not a free-form gabfest for 30 minutes as hosted by self-proclaimed nerd Chris Hardwick.

It is no surprise that happy-go-lucky Bryan Cranston has a dark side. I mean, no one could play a character as dark as Walter White in Breaking Bad without having some firsthand experiences with pain and rage.

Sho’ nuff, this month’s GQ has a profile on Cranston preceding the final eight episodes of Breaking Bad‘s run, and in it, Cranston says…this:

It was a woman he dated after his short-lived first marriage. She was a drug addict, terribly unstable, and she followed Cranston to New York when he left L.A. to work on the soap opera Loving. She stalked him, leaving messages on his answering machine: “I’m gonna kill you. I’m gonna cut your balls off. I’m gonna have your d*ck sawed off.” Finally, one day, the woman showed up at Cranston’s Upper West Side apartment, banging on the door.

And I envisioned myself killing her. It was so clear. My apartment had a brick wall on one side, and I envisioned opening the door, grabbing her by the hair, dragging her inside, and shoving her head into that brick wall until brain matter was dripping down the sides of it.

Then this, to make us feel a LITTLE better:

Then I shuddered and realized how clearly I saw that happening,” continues the actor. “And I called the police because I was so afraid. I was temporarily insane — capable of doing tremendous damage to her and to myself.”

Not willing to so much as breathe until they have an amazing show in every genre of television, AMC has announced that they’re dipping their toe into sci-fi (no, zombies aren’t sci-fi) with Line of Sight, a series about a man who works for the NTSB, investigating a plane crash.

Oh, did I mention that the plane crash was “MYSTERIOUS?” Because AMC sure did.

In investigating the crash, his life begins to slowly unravel, thus confirming that it is, in fact an AMC show. No news on who the actor playing Lewis Bernt, NTSB investigator is, but I would hazard a guess it will be someone awesome. Perhaps the girl that plays Sally Draper. Everyone likes her!

In the current drought of Breaking Bad episodes, and the certain vacuum to follow, let’s take what we can get and overanalyze the shit out of it, regardless of where our findings take us.

Here we’ve got a still featuring Walt seemingly pleading with Jesse, with Jesse looking all, “Talk to the hand girlfriend.” Or maybe he’s looking all, “I ate too much Lotaburger, and I was supposed to cleanse today. I hate myself.”

In any event, one guy looks desparate and one guy looks nonplussed, which makes this still no different than every other frame of film that’s manifested itself in seasons 1-4.5.

Here’s the pic. LET THE GREAT EXPERIMENT BEGIN!

While we all know that, come July or August, Breaking Bad will be gone forever and will never be coming back, AMC still gives us hope. That hope is coming in the form of a potential Saul Goodman spinoff, which might just be half an hour long, and might just be a comedy.

I’m on board. Of all the characters I’d like to examine after the mothership runs its course, Saul takes the cake. The half-hour rumor is also promising, as I don’t know if audiences could stomach 60 minutes of smarm. 30 sounds nice, though.

Bob Odenkirk is a comic actor with a distinguished resume, so let’s hope that producer Vince Gilligan gets the itch and gets this thing going so that we don’t have to leave this world just yet.

AMC, whose had a tremendous amount of success with The Walking Dead, is back at the well of evil, soulless beasts, this time with The Terror, a series premised upon a British Royal Navy crew that gets stuck in the arctic, only to have a terrible, terrible monster attack them…IN THE SNOW!

The series is set in 1847, so it will also appeal to all those fans of English period pieces that also love watching high-budget action TV in which the protagonists get ripped to pieces. That is to say, it will appeal to everyone.

The Terror will be based on a 2007 novel of the same name, so, at the very least, this story might turn you on to a pretty cool book. If you’re the type of person that can or wants to read.

After developing an iron-grip stranglehold on Sunday night television (or at least sharing its grip with HBO and Showtime), AMC wants a night all to itself, and that’s shaping up to be Real Original Thursdays, during which the network will offer up some reality TV shows that supposedly won’t make our eyes bleed.

To give you some flavor, here’s a little teaser from Freakshow, a reality program that follows Todd Ray, who runs a group of freaks (that can’t be the politically correct term) that operate down on the Venice Boardwalk in LA.

Take a look and see what you think. It premieres on Valentine’s Day…because of all the romance.

‘Walking Dead’ Sets Yet Another Record With Season 3.5 Debut http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/walking-dead-sets-yet-another-record-with-season-3-5-debut/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/walking-dead-sets-yet-another-record-with-season-3-5-debut/#comments Mon, 11 Feb 2013 22:29:20 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=253472 Turns out things about zombies are pretty popular.

The post ‘Walking Dead’ Sets Yet Another Record With Season 3.5 Debut appeared first on Screen Junkies.

Making a strong argument for the philosophy of “give the world half a season, then wait months and months, then give them a little more,” the mid-season premiere of The Walking Dead outdid the season premiere setting another record for the show, cable, and presumably, the universe with 12.3 million viewers, up from 10.9 million at the onset of the season.

The show isn’t just performing well when benchmarked to cable, but its draw with viewers 18-49 is outperforming network fare like Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, and other shows that are far worse and don’t feature zombie epidemics as plot points.

This development leads us to the conclusion that a show on cable will not always underperform compared to those on networks, provided that the cable show has zombies. Always bet on the show with zombies, even if it’s a webisode on McSweeney’s or something.

It’s all there in the headline, but some more details are probably due.

After a decent response to its airing of the pilot episode in black-and-white in July, The Walking Dead will be running its first two seasons in all that colorless wonder in February, according to showrunner Glen Mazzara.

Having not seen the black-and-white pilot, I wonder if the absence of color lends the show any more gravity, as we all suspect it would. Entertainment often seems more important and iconic when drained of its color. I’m sure this holds true for The Walking Dead, too. At least until T-Dog shows up and goes “Aww hell no!” when he sees a zombie.

Then the show will go back to seeming pretty unimportant.

But then we’ll see Daryl do something awesome in black-and-white, and the show will feel important again.

And back and forth, up and down, like bubbles in a lava lamp until the show is cancelled.
