This picture was released as a first look at Doug Liman‘s All You Need Is Kill. Cruise plays a soldier fighting in a war with aliens who finds himself caught in a time loop of his last day in the battle, though he becomes better skilled along the way. I really hope there’s a scene where he says gesundheit to someone before they sneeze.

All in all, it’s a pretty sweet mech suit and I’m interested to see what else Doug Liman has in store. Perhaps Bill Paxton with a flame-thrower that has a chainsaw bayonet? That’d be cool.

The film offers a soldier in battle, repeatedly living out the day of his death, and over time becoming, a better soldier. Doug Liman, who directed the first two Bournes (and Swingers!), will be directing the project. It’s anticipated that filming will start in fall of next year.

Aside from his weird turn in next summer‘s Rock of Ages, it seems that Tom Cruise has been pursuing more action-oriented fare recently, filming One Shot where he will play serial badass Jack Reacher, and signing on for Joseph Kasinski’s sci-fi film Oblivion.

That’s why they call it “acting,” I guess.

Doug Liman is officially on board to direct All You Need Is Kill, Empire Online is reporting.  Based on the 2004 sci-fi novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, the film will follow the story of a soldier who is killed whil fighting aliens, but finds himself caught in a time loop, reliving the events leading up to his death over and over again. With each subsequent death, the character improves his skills while attempting to break the cycle.

This really makes me mad. Warner Bros. acted like I was nuts when I pitched them my idea for a mash-up of Starship Troopers and Groundhog Day. They kept telling me things like "you’re not authorized to be in here" and "put your pants back on." Well, we’ll see who’s crazy when they get a call from my lawyer, Robert Kardashian.
