Yesterday, the Internet was abuzz with rumors about who Guy Pearce is playing in the upcoming Alien prequel, Prometheus. The news was that he would play Peter Weyland, industrialist and the Weyland half of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Those reports were in fact true and now we have a formal introduction to the man.

With this tease, directed by Luke Scott, we jump ahead thirteen years into the future for TED2023. Here, Pearce slimes it up as Peter Weyland while discussing his interest in changing the world. It’s a short bit that won’t appear in the actual film, but still a pretty cool nod to the world we currently inhabit. Gives me the impression that if anyone is going to stumble across alien xenomorphs, it would be a wealthy British entreprenuar. Richard Branson, I’m looking at you.

Guy Pearce has in fact joined the cast of Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus. Though we don’t know much about the top-secret Alien prequel, let’s assume it involves running around on a spaceship and probably playing a cocky guy who gets eaten. If that is the case, that’s a perfect role for Guy Pearce. I can imagine him running around on a spaceship right now. Ducking behind corners. Sometimes doing science stuff. It could be his Guy Pearciest role yet.

He’ll be joining Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Rafe Spall, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, and Logan Marshall-Green. No idea why Cillian Murphy isn’t also a part of this project. Maybe his voice-mailbox was full when they called. (The Playlist)

Not only that, but the prequel will be shot in 3D, and will probably be stretched into two films. Then again, all of this info comes from a poorly translated Swiss-television interview with Giger’s wife, and if there’s one thing my grandpa taught me, it’s never trust a German or a woman. Based on that logic, Giger’s wife is lying through her teeth, and her husband will not be part of the upcoming Alien animated short, which will be shot in 1D. Thanks, grandpa. Ridley Scott Could Go Back to Rubber Suits for ‘Alien’ Prequel http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/ridley-scott-could-go-back-to-rubber-suits-for-alien-prequel/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/ridley-scott-could-go-back-to-rubber-suits-for-alien-prequel/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 Alien was made back in the good old days when monsters were guys in rubber suits. If Ridley Scott is making a prequel to Alien, it would make sense to go back to the practical effects. It turns out the director's been consulting with Avatar creature designer Neville Page. Scott’s still not sold on that performance capture hocus pocus. “I just recently was talking to Ridley Scott,” Page said at a media even for the Blu-Ray release of Avatar. “He brought up a really interesting point about how the real rubber suits for him are still a preference because you get stuff that you’re forced to have be real. As a result, it feels real on camera or in camera. I thought, ‘Wait a minute, I thought we were doing everything digital now.’ Just like us, a director’s going to use whatever tools make sense for the end result.” That’s food for thought for Ridley Scott. Dude, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Bring back the rubber suit. Page said Scott was just gathering information to weigh his options. “He was talking more theoretical in regards to filmmaking and his experience on the original. It’s a choice of now moving forward, when you can do an alien fully digital, is that what he would do?” What do you think? Wouldn’t it be great to see an old school alien in the Alien prequel as opposed to more CG B.S.?

We know Ripley can’t be in the Alien prequel Ridley Scott is directing, but there may be a way for Sigourney Weaver to lend a hand. While promoting the Blu Ray release of the Alien saga and Avatar, Weaver gave her opinions on the Alien prequel.

“Certainly not as an actor but if they needed help with the story, I could probably help them,” Weaver said. “I have a good sense of what people appreciate in the series and what they don’t care about. So I hope they’ll ask me.”

More after the jump…

If we have anything to do with it, and we don’t, we’d suggest Scott ask her. I mean, this is the story of what leads up to Ripley’s four adventures. As for the casting rumorsCarey Mulligan, Natalie Portman, Noomi Rapace – Weaver’s confident there’s no replacing Ripley.

“I think it’s a tricky thing because you want to get a good young actress in there but she should be very different from Ripley. But I would trust Ridley. I mean, he found me. I think that it’s an important decision. As with all of these Alien films it’s an ensemble film, so it’s very important who you pick for all the parts I think.”

The other scandal in Alien-land is that it seems Fox wants to make a PG-13 movie. That might sound like a terrible idea for a story about monsters that burst from people’s chests and spray them with acid, but Weaver has a way of calming us down.

“I think unfortunately, because movies have changed so much and gotten so much gorier, that nowadays probably Alien would be PG-13 because there wasn’t much blood in it. Except for the swearing, I don’t know. It’s tricky. That’s a good question.”

It's said that the script is successful on both a creative and budgetary level, and we don't know much more beyond that. What we do know is that the action takes place 35 years before Ridley Scott's original and follows a female Space Marine General. The studio and director have named Natalie Portman as their top-pick for the role, with Noomi Rapace selected as an alternate. Other names that have been mentioned are Gemma Arterton and Carey Mulligan (who just screams Marine general). And beyond that, nobody knows nothing. People run around and get eaten, I guess. Ridley was upset when he wasn't asked to make Aliens, and then Cameron came along and pissed in his soup. Except Cameron's piss, arguably, improved the franchise. Now Ridley wants to piss back with even better piss. "The film will be really tough, really nasty… It's the dark side of the moon. We are talking about gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet?" You had me at "engineers of space." If these movies focusing on The Space Jockey of the first Alien film never happen, I'm pitching "Engineers of Space" to the The History Channel. I'm certain the title alone will land me a production deal. Meanwhile, The Playlist dug up an interview that Gemma Arterton did with the Sunday Times in which she says, "Ridley Scott saw Alice Creed and he loved it. He wants me to meet for Aliens: The Remake, or something." As you can tell by her attention to detail, Arterton is watching this project like hawk. Only time will tell if she could be the new Ripley. Ridley first has to take time off from poking his Cameron voodoo doll to meet with her. (CinemaBlend)
