It took years to bring to the screen on account on nobody really wanting to be in it, but Alfonso Cuaron was finally successful in making Gravity. And now that film has a trailer. George Clooney and Sandra Bullock star as an astronaut and a scientist left stranded when their spacewalk goes awry. Hurtling out of control in their spacesuits, the pair cling to one another while searching for a way to contact Earth. Luckily for them, there is no such thing as space sharks.

Whether you liked Pirates of the Caribbean 4 or wished you owned a boat with a plank, so you could shove the film reels off of said plank, On Stranger Tides is a box office winner. Disney has collected over $639 million doubloons worldwide so far, which means there will be more of them. The only problem is that Johnny Depp and Pirates 4 director Rob Marshall are not yet signed on for a fifth installment. They’ve also set sail to make another project together, Thin Man, which is perhaps their way of abandoning ship.

If Depp pulls out, that’ll obviously create a major whirlpool for producers to fight out of. However, the studio is already throwing around new names for director: Sam Raimi, Chris Weitz, Alfonso Cuaron, Shawn Levy and their fantasy pick… Tim Burton. Apparently, they wanted Burton for #4, so it seems unlikely they’d get him now. Of those, I’d say Levy makes the most sense, given that his filmography contains many huge budget, family friendly CG-based movies. I guess we’ll see how it all shakes down.

Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Gravity’ Will Make Other Space Movies Look Like Idiots

Now that Gravity finally has found its cast in Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, we’re free to report on other aspects of the film besides the likelihood of Natalie Portman joining the project. Producer David Heyman had a chance to talk to Collider and had some interesting updates.

Production is beginning sooner than anticipated with cameras rolling in London this May. He also has high praise for the director, certain that what they are putting together is next level film-making.

“The whole film has been pre-vised and figured out, it’s fuckin’ awesome. I mean, unlike anything you’ve seen in space. It’s just great. He’s a privilege to work with—he’s a real visionary.

“We’re using technology that’s never seen before. This film will be more immersive, I believe, than anything you’ve seen before. You will really feel like you are in space. It will not be an objective view of space, it will be an immersive view of space. And you know as you say, with Children of Men, he loves these long shots. It’s gonna be a really bold, bold film.”

He also revealed that the film will not be shot in 3D, but rather converted in the post process. That’s bad though, right?? Please learn from Clash Of The Titans’ example. If you really want to earn higher ticket prices, you need to commit to the gimmick from day one.

Clooney To Defy Gravity As a Spaceman

Having already conquered the skies, the battlefield, the deep South, Las Vegas, and the bedroom of every woman he has ever desired, there is only one place left for George Clooney to go: Outer effing space. Ah crap, he’s been there too in Solaris. Well whatever, he’s conquering it again.

Clooney is set to appear alongside Sandra Bullock in Gravity, a film following the plight of two astronauts who find themselves stranded among the stars after an asteroid cripples their space station and kills their entire team in the process. Clooney, who will play the leader of the decimated astro-squad, snagged the role after Robert Downey Jr. dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Bullock’s character, a mother determined to get back to her children on earth, will reportedl drive much of the film’s plot.

Alfonso Cuaron will direct the Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures flick. Production is set to begin between April and May of next year, provided that an asteroid hasn’t collided with the planet and destroyed all life by that point. (Deadline)

Now Universal Wants Sandra Bullock For ‘Gravity’

Man, Alfonso Cuaron is having a bitch of a time finding someone to star in his Gravity movie. Angelina passed on it twice, Scarlett Johannson and Blake Lively were rumored to be in contention, and then it was announced that Natalie Portman was in talks for the role. Well, she passed. Now Universal is trying their damndest to woo Sandra Bullock for the part. If you ask me, Bullock should pass as well. She doesn’t need to be caught in the center of a widely-publicized story about how she was second banana to a few younger women. That’s so last year.

If Bullock does indeed pass, they should just go with Olivia Munn. She’s already got the helmet and everything.

Natalie Portman’s Name Floated For ‘Gravity’

Alfonso Cuaron and Warner Bros have had a hard time finding a leading lady to anchor Gravity after Angelina Jolie has declared herself anti-Gravity twice. A slew of actresses including Rebecca Hall, Naomi Watts, Sandra Bullock, Marion Cottilard, Blake Lively, Sienna Miller, Abbie Cornish, Scarlett Johannson, Olivia Wilde, and Carey Mulligan have been approached for the role, but none have agreed to float at zero G’s in a room full of Teamsters. Now, there’s news that Natalie Portman may be buying a box of Dramamine.

A firm offer has gone out to the actress after early buzz about Black Swan has her on track for an Oscar. The belief is that if she can handle that challenging role, she’s more than capable of carrying the unofficial Lost In Space sequel. (THR)

Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively Sparring It Out For ‘Gravity’ Lead

It was rumored last week that Blake Lively was making a play for the role of sexy astronaut in Alfonso Cuaron‘s Gravity. However, it’s been expected that role was Scarlett Johansson‘s for the taking. Well, now it’s official that both ladies are pushing for the part, with reports that they both have tested for the role.

Will this create a rift between the two? Will that rift involve wrestling?? Hopefully. We’ll let you know if and when Pay-Per-View tickets for the event go on sale. Gravity is said to be a really ambitious, experimental film that would require a lot from whichever actress lands the part. Neither Johansson or Lively have carried a film of this magnitude to date, but both are ready to step up. Personally, I’m really torn. Either would be super-convincing as an astronaut. (THR)

‘Gravity’ Might Be Kind To Scarlett Johansson

Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity may have lost Angelina Jolie, but it now looks like Scarlett Johansson will fill her ridiculously hot shoes. Bleeding Cool reports that Johansson has verbally agreed to star in the film with her Iron Man 2 co-star Robert Downey Jr..

Johansson’s role in Iron Man 2 didn’t amount to much beyond the trailer, so don’t go thinking she and RDJ are the next Bogart and Bacall. This could all be talk, but that’s no reason to poo-poo the idea. Please put any negativity aside for a moment or two and imagine Scarlett at zero G’s. That’s something we could all have if we wish together. We can do this!!
