We’re 26 seasons into the grand Simpsons experiment, and I’m pretty comfortable calling it a success. Creative controller Al Jean say down with Deadline for a state of the union interview and said he didn’t know when the madness would end.

Jean stated that rumors of ratings troubles are perennial and not to be taken seriously. He offered this assessment:

Every fall, we are after football and our ratings are great, and then in the spring, when football is over, it looks like a drought. Nonetheless, our ads are in the top 5 of all networks, we’re huge in M18-34, and we rerun really well.

He says in the piece (which is definitely worth a read for both fans and the curious alike) that no formal conversations have taken place about the end of the show. And you know what?

I believe him. Keep going strong, Al.

The Showrunner For ‘The Simpsons’ Has An Idea For How He’d Like To End The Show http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/the-showrunner-for-the-simpsons-has-an-idea-for-how-hed-like-to-end-the-show/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/the-showrunner-for-the-simpsons-has-an-idea-for-how-hed-like-to-end-the-show/#comments Mon, 25 Aug 2014 17:40:30 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=264434 ...by starting it back over.

After years and years and years of criticisms saying the show is circling the drain and that the best years are behind it, The Simpsons seems to be enjoying something of a renaissance. The show’s crossover episodes are generating a fair amount of buzz, and the rerun marathon on FXX is getting insanely good ratings. It’s a good time to be The Simpsons.

So naturally, now is the time that showrunner Al Jean decides to muse about how he would like to end the show. There’s no indication that a finale is on the horizon, but his way of shutting things down sounds pretty appealing.

He thinks that the show would end with the opening Christmas pageant from the very first episode, suggesting that the world of The Simpsons plays out on a loop, rather than linearly, and that everything will start over again. It also goes a long way to making the reruns more appealing, considering they’re actually not taking place in the past of the show. It’s weird, but practical.

Of course, no word yet on an end date. If the show can right the ship a bit, hopefully we’re years and years away.

‘Simpsons’ Executive Producer Teases The Upcoming Death Will Be ‘The Yellow Wedding’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/simpsons-executive-producer-teases-the-upcoming-death-will-be-the-yellow-wedding/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/simpsons-executive-producer-teases-the-upcoming-death-will-be-the-yellow-wedding/#comments Wed, 30 Apr 2014 17:54:42 +0000 Wookie Johnson http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=261361 And also kinda spoils it.

With the death of beloved and reviled characters becoming more prominent on television, it only makes sense that The Simpsons would follow in the footsteps of Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, The Good Wife, and Family Guy. However, the shocking death that is scheduled to happen in the upcoming 26th season premiere just got a bit less shocking.

Executive producers Al Jean and Matt Selman sat down with TV Line to discuss the upcoming ruination and might have spoiled the whole thing. As well as Game of Thrones if you’re not caught up.

“This is going to be a bigger deal than King Joffrey on Game of Thrones – the Yellow Wedding!” Jean said during a conference call. “The character that dies is portrayed by an actor who won an Emmy for playing that character. People who reported on it then reported we were killing an ‘iconic’ character; I’d like to say it’s a great character, but I never used the word ‘iconic.’ It’s a terrific character and it [happens in] our premiere this coming year.”

But just because a character is dying, that doesn’t mean he (or she) won’t pop up in a future episode.

“We always have kind of a flexible reality,” Jean admitted, suggesting we could see the departed in a Halloween episode or in a dream sequence.

“What we told the performer is, ‘This does not mean the end of your participation in The Simpsons,’” [EP Matt] Selman added.

Selman’s quote implies that the performer is not a member of the regular cast as they all provide multiple voices. In fact, there are only two guest stars that have won an Emmy for their work. That narrows down the candidates and gives a good sense of who this ‘iconic’ character could be. I won’t spoil it for you here and I advise that book readers don’t either.

A number of cities were vying to host Comic-Con last year, but Springfield really should have been in the running. Nerdy celebrities seem drawn to the town like jocks to an obnoxious geek with stretchy underwear. Recent examples include the Flight of the Concords duo, Seth Rogen, Ira Glass, “Weird Al” Yankovic, and regular pal around Stephen Hawking. Well, add another nerd to the nerd pile (which is next to Springfield’s flaming tire pile): Michael Cera.

Cera will guest star on the next season of “The Simpsons” as a seemingly splendid love interest for Lisa. He’ll play a boy named Nick in an episode called “The Daughter Also Rises,” not “Nick and Lisa’s Infinite Playtime” or something similar. Here’s what Executive Producer Al Jean says about the episode:

“He starts quoting Hemingway and she says, ‘You’re not a product of the Springfield public schools, are you?’ And he goes, ‘No, I come to Springfield for the food and the women,’” says executive producer Al Jean. “So he talks a good game. [But] she starts to realize that he’s less than expected.”

A new kid in Springfield who’s as smart as Lisa? I don’t believe it, or at least I wouldn’t, if I hadn’t seen it many, many times before. Ah well, I imagine it’s hard for a show that’s been on for over 20 seasons, which begins each episode with a boy writing the same thing on a chalkboard multiple times, to not repeat itself. (EW)

More about the season finale after the jump.

The season finale boasts five superstar guests, and still gives Simpsons regulars something to do. “The Simpsons have a dog, they make him ugly and enter him in an ugly dog contest,” Jean said. “The judge is Krusty and he drops out, so Moe becomes this great judge like Simon Cowell. So they give him a shot on American Idol and we’ve got all the judges. We got Simon, Ellen, Randy, Kara and Ryan Seacrest are all in the episode.”

The Treehouse of Horror Halloween episodes are a staple of The Simpsons we always look forward to. This October’s boasts another A-list guest star. “We recorded Hugh Laurie for a segment where Homer and Marge are taking a cruise together on a sailboat and they find him as a castaway and he completely disrupts their romance. It is like Dead Calm.”

Season 20 just came out on DVD and Blu Ray, to take advantage of the show’s entrance into HDTV. DVD fans can still look forward to the show’s 13th season release on old school DVD, and even it has a behind the scenes guest star.

“Stan Lee did a DVD commentary for season 13, the episode he appeared in. He’s a legend, man. It was such a thrill. A wonderful guy and a real hero to people like me. I asked him things in the commentary like, ‘Why did the Watcher in Fantastic Four say he was never supposed to interfere when all he did was interfere with people?’ He laughed. He said, ‘You got me.’”

The Simpsons remains a staple Sunday nights at 8 on Fox.
