Those who saw Adam Wingard‘s You’re Next replied universally with, “More! More! I would like to see more.” Despite this interest, the studio doesn’t have any intention of moving forward with a sequel which is too bad now that Wingard and writer Simon Barrett revealed what that film would have been. The Playlist asked the team behind the much buzzed about The Guest, what we could expect from Lamb Mask’s return. You’re Next spoilers ahead…

Barrett: I’ll give you the starting point: in the end credits of “You’re Next,” it’s implied that Sharni might be a suspect.

Wingard: The end credits are supposed to be a police dossier breakdown, with a whole schematic over all of the actors’ photos. And all of their photos are over where they died in the film. So when Sharni’s name came up, it says “suspect?” If we ever had a sequel, that’s where we’d go.

Barrett: Yeah, it was a hint. So the idea would be that it opens in a prison van and she’s handcuffed to a bunch of other female prisoners, en route. We’d see that she was railroaded —even though her trial isn’t for another year, no one will take her seriously.

Wingard: She gets blamed for all the murders…

Barrett: Because it’s just her and a bunch of corpses. Then the prison van would get attacked by Lamb Mask and his associates, because he would survive the stab to the head.

Wingard: With Lamb Mask, it was going to be that because of the stabbing, now he couldn’t feel pain.

Barrett: Yeah, because of the damage to his frontal lobe, he couldn’t feel pain. And is basically “Darkman.” And it would be about her in the woods getting chased down while handcuffed to these other women, some of whom are her friends, others are her enemies. And then they’d take refuge at a certain point. It would get more complicated than that, but it was basically her, in the woods, handcuffed to a few other prisoners. At a certain point, they wouldn’t be handcuffed anymore. We had a really concrete idea and if anything it would have been more action oriented.

Wingard: What about the house where they end up?

Barrett: I was going to have them take refuge in a meth lab and it was going to be booby-trapped.

Wingard: So the idea would be that instead of her setting all the traps, the place where they’re hiding would already have the traps set. Which they’re trying to set off and there would be all these guys in the animal traps.

Barrett: Yeah there’d be all of these insane nail cannons and stuff that the meth lab guys would set off. And the meth lab guys would be a part of the movie too.

This is the level that all horror films should reach to achieve. Instead we’ll get six movies about an inanimate doll staring at a door and then that door slams closed.

Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens appeared on Good Morning Britain to promote his new film, The Guest, which doesn’t sound all that exciting as a concept. What makes this appearance one for the books is that Stevens lost it and devolved into a giggle fit when the host commented, “This is a big opportunity for you in Hollywood, you must’ve had to beat off a LOT of American men to get this part.”

Oblivious to her double entendre, the host continues to push her point by asking, “Why does that make you giggle? Did you not have to beat them off? …With a big stick?” This, of course, forced Stevens even deeper into childish laughter. Hilarious.

But notice how he doesn’t answer the question though.

In The Guest, a family loses their military son leading to a nice stranger appearing on their doorstep claiming to be a fellow soldier sent to check in on them. But like any movie where a house guest is mentioned in the title, you know that guest is going to turn the homeowner’s life upside down. They may go the You, Me, and Dupree route by upgrading your cable package without asking or taking a dump in the master bathroom or they might go the Dan Stevens route by seducing your teenage daughter and murdering everyone. In either case, it’s important they chip in and help out around the house.

Everyone knows that going on vacation with your parents sucks but for the Davison family it’s MURDER. I mean actual murder. As in, they are killed ruthlessly by masked assailants. I shouldn’t have been so plucky considering these are people’s lives.

But anyway, that’s the premise behind Adam Wingard‘s You’re Next. A family is attacked by killers in their secluded vacation home during a family reunion getaway. However, the murderous intruders may have bit off more than they can chew when they encounter Sharni Vinson‘s Erin, the girlfriend of the eldest Davison son whose mysterious past makes her hard to kill. Is she a robot? I might know but ain’t saying.
