Jason Reitman appears to be getting a little more somber with his fare these days, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Harkening back more to Up in the Air than Juno, Men, Women and Children seems to take a long, uncomfortable stare at the characters.

And that seems to happen while creepy slow piano music is playing. However, an upside to the gravitas is that we get to see comedic actors like Adam Sandler, Judy Greer, and Dean Norris (I would argue he’s comedy) take a more serious approach.

Anyway, it’s not for everyone, but it might be for you.

Brad Pitt, in addition to being a personal lubricant for any woman over the age of 20, is one of the generation’s most respected actors, having logged decades worth of Oscar-quality films.

But as with many actors of his caliber, his start was less auspicious — there are a bunch of late-’80s and ’90s stinkers with his young, beautiful mug in them. Some actors get lucky right out the gate (see: Jennifer Lawrence), but most actors that anyone cares about had to slog through bit parts in horrible movies to make a name.

In a cutthroat industry like Hollywood, we shouldn’t chastise them. Hell, we all gotta make rent. But that doesn’t make it any less schadenfreudelicious to look back on some of the awful early roles of actors who can now buy and sell us several times over.

Jennifer AnistonLeprechaun (1993) No one will pretend for a second that Jennifer Aniston has any cred as a “meaningful actress” — I’m guessing her shot at Oscar glory is as unlikely as her chances at a meaningful long-term relationship. But one year before she became Rachel Greene, she starred with Willow in horror comedy Leprechaun. This series is still cranking out sequels and prequels; no telling if she’s gonna add to her rumored $11o million net worth by reprising her role.

Leonardo DiCaprio – Critters 3 (1991) The funniest thing about this role is the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio pretty much looks like the same 17-year-old punk 23 years later. Still, it’s funny to see Martin Scorsese‘s go-to actor competing with a bunch of nasty Furbies with sharp teeth in the second sequel to an 80s B-movie franchise. Unfortunately, Leo makes it through the film without getting his punchable face chewed through.

Steve Carell – Curly Sue (1991) Steve Carell is the most aiiight comedian on the face of the earth, so I’m not sure if anyone missed much from his quick, nobody role as a waiter in this charming early-1990s vehicle for the surviving Belushi brother.

Damon WayansBeverly Hills Cop (1984) The funniest Wayans brother (by far) offers Eddie Murphy his bananas in a pretty funny bit role that served as something of a predecessor to his Men on Film bit on In Living Color.

Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zellweger – Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1994) This movie is indescribably bad, and features a pre-”awright, awright, awright” McConaughey basically being an evil redneck to Zellweger’s obnoxious, interminably screaming minx. Don’t watch this. Consider yourself warned.

Continue to the next page for the very humble beginnings of Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, Angelina Jolie, and more…

The Internet has pervaded modern life, and in case you don’t ascertain that from your daily encounters with your phone and laptop, now director Jason Reitman is going to show you with his newest film, Men, Women, and Children starring Adam Sandler.

The film is about the role technology plays in our interactions, but the trailer reads more like a PSA for Internet addiction with its silent, somber demonstration of people texting, typing, surfing their way to loneliness and isolation.

Reitman has shown he is capable of wielding a deft hand in some instances (Up in the Air, Thank You for Smoking), but also willing to oversell matters (Juno, Young Adult) in others. It’s hard to tell which camp this will fall into, but we have to say we like the idea of serious Adam Sandler getting whores much more than goofy Adam Sandler getting whores. If only because the goofy Adam Sandler would probably mistakenly pick up Rob Schneider in drag.

This is a rough one. Even though we have reported it before, we must now revisit the sublime unpleasantness that is a Kevin James-Adam Sandler video game apocalypse film called Pixel. The premise of the film is that Sandler is a video game expert who helps the Earth ward off an attack from prominent video game characters. Kevin James plays the president. YES. I’M AWARE OF WHAT I JUST WROTE!

It’s a mildly interesting premise before you read the words “Adam Sandler and Kevin James.” Then it just gets terrible. To its credit, it did manage to snag a wildly entertaining Jane Krakowski as the First Lady, so maybe there’s some hope for this film. As mentioned earlier, it also stars Peter Dinklage.

I don’t know what to think. Let’s put judgment on hold until we see a trailer. Until then, as with all Adam Sandler and Kevin James films, “cautious pessimism” is the way to go.

During an appearance on Norm MacDonald‘s podcast, Adam Sandler said he didn’t think he would ever host Saturday Night Live, saying that he was “slow” now, and he didn’t “know how good it would be.” Well, those are both very valid concerns to a normal person, but they sound like contrived excuses from the man who brought us Jack and Jill.

So if there were some of you out there, staring at the TV in anticipation, with a little pennant that said “Adam Sandler!” you’ll just have to get your fix from one of his terrible films, because you’re not going to see him return to his roots.

While it wasn’t discussed on the podcast, it warrants mentioning that Adam Sandler was fired from Saturday Night Live in 1995, so there could still be some bad blood there, even though he’s gone on to make billions of dollars kissing Paul Blart.

It sounds awesome!

It’s pretty well documented that Sandler is a Q*bert fan. It’s not at all, but I think we’re all pretty comfortable assuming that the sun rises and sets over his Q*bert fascination.

Sound like a stretch? Well, perhaps it was the best way to show Adam Sandler riding an ostrich, Mr. Hollywood Genius.

Anyhow, I thought 50 First Dates missed the mark and Blended looks like it’s even a further cry from the greatness that was The Wedding Singer. It’s clear that Sandler stop trying, but what excuse does the hair stylist who worked on those kids have to give? Talk about phoning it in.

It seems the good people at Forbes realized a few years back that there are far fewer billionaires reading their articles on tax shelters than there would be middle-Americans reading pseudo-mathematical lists about rich celebrities.

So they’ve up and created a list that quantifies who the most overpaid actor is. And it’s Adam Sandler. Does something qualify as news when everyone knows it to be true?

The list is predicated on an entrant’s salary vs. the profitability of their movie. However, it’s safe to say that Jack and Jill would have LOST far more money if Sandler hadn’t starred in it. But to his detriment, that means it never would have been made.

Regardless, Sandler is responsible for Jack and Jill, and thus should be at the top of many, many, many bad lists.

For a few months now, we’ve known of the Adam Sandler project The Cobbler, but beyond the name and the star, details have been scarce. We know that it’s actually about a cobbler (probably played by Sandler) that manages to infiltrate the lives of his customers.

Unfortunately, that’s not enough to know if it’s going to be good or not. The recent addition of Dustin Hoffman and frequent co-star Steve Buscemi helps, but Hoffman was in Meet the Fockers, and Steve Buscemi was in Mr. Deeds, so again, no help.

Oh. Wait. It’s got Method Man in it. I’m a huge fan of the resume of Mr. Man, so I’m comfortable removing any implied tuba sounds from future reports on this film.

Though it does hinge on the concept of magical shoes, Adam Sandler is in talks to star in an honest to goodness quality movie. One that involves more acting and less yelling.

The Station Agent’s Tom McCarthy has his sights on Sandler to star in The Cobbler, an indie drama about a shoe repairman who metaphysically steps into the lives of the people whose shoes he repairs. If this were in Dennis Dugan‘s hands, I’d be rolling my eyes. But, for now, it’s nice to see Sandler in a movie about shoes that won’t require him to put Kevin James’s toes in his mouth. (THR)

Because the well of American scripts in which studios can shoehorn Adam Sandler is beginning to run dry, director Chris Columbus has turned to the world of Korean cinema and the 2010 export Hello Ghost as a starring vehicle for Mr. Happy Madison.

Hello Ghost is a film about a man who has survived multiple suicide attempts (yay!) and now has the buren of helping four ghosts that interlope in his life until their problems are solved and they go on their merry ghost-y way.

Unless we actually get to Adam Sandler repeatedly try to kill himself, then fail at even that, then maybe we should just toss this in the pile with Click and Grown Ups 2 and keep living our lives.

There’s very little to draw from in this image (below), but it’s still enough to confuse the viewer on several fronts.

Why are they falling? Is that a Mad Men-type metaphor?

Why does everyone appear terrified about falling except Adam Sandler? The fact that he is furthest down indicates that perhaps he is the bravest, which would be why he’s smiling, and also possibly their leader.

Kevin James has a really weird beard. That’s not a question, but still merits discussion.

Why are they all wearing t-shirts when their exposure to water was a near-certainty? It’s probably because they don’t have great bodies.

Is the tagline for the film really “Summer isn’t just for kids?” Who made that claim? Also, having four man-children jumping to the abyss on the poster doesn’t really do much to refute that claim. If they put Ian McKellan, Christopher Walken, and maybe Richard Nixon on the poster, getting wet in t-shirts, then you could state a case that, no, summer is not just for kids, but having Adam Sandler enjoying summer doesn’t speak to its adult disposition.

David Spade? DAVID SPADE?

Adam Sandler is looking to team back up with his The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates co-star Drew Barrymore for a film about two adults, who, after their first date goes horribly awry, find themselves trapped at a family resort with all their kids from previous marriages.

Yuck.

I’m thinking that they will get together in the end after the kids perform some machiavellian deeds to bring them together. Some other conditions precedent will be Sandler saying “poop” and his yelling at a child in his toddler/Jewish grandmother hybrid voice.

Get excited?

The post Reel Rumble: Who Was Funnier On SNL: Adam Sandler or Andy Samberg appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
We don’t always agree on the happenings in the entertainment community, and we like to make our beefs public. Today, in honor of the upcoming release of That’s My Boy, we’re debating who was funnier on SNL: Adam Sandler or Andy Samberg?

Andy Samberg

Andy Samberg is a funny guy, but most importantly, HE’S NOT ADAM SANDLER, which should allow him to win any Reel Rumble against Adam Sandler. His best years lay ahead of him, which is more than can be said for Sandler, and his scant past work wins by default when compared to Sandler’s later years.

It remains to be seen if Andy Samberg will become a bona fide star, but I’ll take his future promise over Adam Sandler’s current slate of films, which includes Grown Ups 2 and a comedy called Valet Guys with Kevin James. Included in Andy Samberg’s upcoming filmography are two films co-starring Sandler (the aforementioned Grown Ups 2 as well as the animated film Hotel Transylvania, as well as The To Do List (formerly The Hand Job). It’s close, but I’ll take Samberg, thankyouverymuch.

The next comparative category, mouth size, isn’t very close. It’s Samberg in a walk.

Both actors also have more than a passing interest in comedic music, with Sandler having charmed audiences in his SNL days with ditties like “Red Hooded Sweatshirt,” “Lunchlady Land,” and the entire catalog of Opera Man.

Meanwhile, Samberg is 1/3 of the hilarious and talented Lonely Island and responsible for the SNL Digital Shorts “Dick in a Box” and “I’m on a Boat.” Not even close there, Sandler.

Adam Sandler

Who was funnier on SNL, Adam Sandler or Andy Samberg? Sandler, hands down.

To insinuate that Andy Samberg’s time on Saturday Night Live was funnier or better spent than Adam Sandler’s is laughable in its own right. Samberg wouldn’t have his brand of comedy if not for Sandler. He’s in the house of manboy that Sandler built. Though many comedy greats worked under the lights of Studio 8H before Adam Sandler joined the cast in 1991, Sandler was the first to introduce the buffoon vibe to the show, and thus reinvent the institution. By simply doing the silliest thing possible, he was able to shine amongst a sea of future superstars. Sandler shared his time with Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Mike Myers, Chris Farley, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, and David Spade and still stood out. Samberg rose to prominence amongst a much weaker cast and writing staff. You can’t give a culinary trophy to a chef who cooks for the starved.

I will also mention that Andy Samberg had every opportunity to win this superlative but squandered them. This is done by virtue of the Digital Shorts format itself. Designed for Internet praise, these pre-taped and production-heavy videos strayed from the “live” confines SNL had worked within for thirty years. Of course, the standouts like “Dick In A Box,” “I’m On A Boat,” and “Jack Sparrow” were well-received. They grabbed headlines by making use of cheap celebrity stunt-casting and sly winks to the camera. Regardless of Samberg’s weak lyrics and lame rap skills, the Internet ate his awkward performances up. Whereas Sandler made his way before a live audience in a time before the “Like” button existed without smug grins to convey a punchline just hit.

Though this is not a defense of all his films, it is unfair to judge the man’s entire career based on however Drew Barrymore ruined him. That would be like refusing to rock out to “Say It Ain’t So” just because Weezer has finally slipped off the cliff of Sucking Really Bad. Also, by that precedent, a fair amount of blame can be cast in Samberg’s direction because when his work is bad, it’s really bad. Like abysmal bad. “Throw It On the Ground” and that Gotye short this past season owe me minutes of my life back. Minutes that I will redeem by not watching Jesse and Celeste Forever.

In summation, Adam Sandler: hard-working, unique, a star for the ages. Andy Samberg: similar to every Internet comedy group, coasted on the work of his not-so-camera-ready partners, wack rap skills, and need of a haircut.

According to the A.V. Club, the film made only 1/3 as much as A Night at the Roxbury, which makes it a terrible, terrible failure, so in case you thought that director Jorma Taccone was being straight with you when he said a sequel was in the works, let’s just set things straight right now.

No.

Will Forte, while doing press for That’s My Boy, has said, “I don’t think anybody in their right mind would give us any money for it.” Which is pretty damning considering he should be the most optimistic person of all, being Mr. MacGruber and everything.

That’s a shame, because MacGruber was pretty damn funny and weird, and we have to hear this bleak outlook while he’s doing press for another phoned-in Adam Sandler project which did manage to get made as some studio exec shrugged and just mumbled, “I dunno. Adam Sandler?”
