Some films did fine. Frozen held on well, Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle did more or less fine given their adult subject matters and R ratings.

But three movies that people expected little from did even worse than people thought. Grudge Match, that terrible, terrible looking film about elderly men punching each other, made $7.3 million. Justin Bieber‘s film, Hey, I’m Justin Bieber! Believe made $2 million, which doesn’t even begin to cover Beebs’ lip gloss budget.

Then there is 47 Ronin, which I thought looked kind of cool, and seemed like a decent Keanu Reeves vehicle. I was in the minority. The film made $9.9 million on a budget of perhaps $200 million. That’s a stinker, all right. It is widely assumed that unless the film increases its second-week take by 1000%, Keanu Reeves will be tied down to a highway and run over by a truck.

Get this…an old favorite gets a RE-IMAGINING! Crazy, huh?

While the idea of taking a beloved property and giving it a modern context is hardly new, it would appear that the producers of 47 Ronin hedged that concept against a number of other bold moves, including the bankability of the aging (but awesome and appropriate) Keanu Reeves, and giving first-time director Carl Rinsch a $170 million budget and the keys to the castle.

It’s far from definitive, but this trailer looks as though those risks may have paid off from a product standpoint. Now it’s up to those boring suits at the studio to find a market for this promising film.

In addition to maybe getting our hopes up for a Bill and Ted sequel, Keanu Reeves also took some time to talk about 47 Ronin. We’ll start with the romance angles for the ladies, but stick around guys cuz there’s some swords stuff too.

“I call it a story of revenge and impossible love. The samurai become outcast and decide to enact revenge on the person who is responsible for the death of their lord.”

Reeves plays  “an outsider, a kind of half-breed with a mysterious past, who’s in love with the princess and she’s in love with me, but we can’t be together.”

Now, swords.

“[I] just finished a sword fight a couple of weeks ago with a great actor named Hiroyuki Sanada. He’s fantastic.”

He IS fantastic. You probably know him best from swor fighting with Jackie Chan in Rush Hour 3 or beating the crap out of Jack and Sayid on the final season of “Lost.” What? I didn’t say he was fantastic at selecting projects. (MTV)

Though he should be spending his time getting that Werner Herzog Bill and Ted sequel off the ground, Keanu Reeves is gearing up for the samurai pig-pile, 47 Ronin. After many delays, the production is forging ahead by adding cast members.

Babel‘s Rinko Kikuchi, Hiroyuki Sanada, Kou Shibasaki, and Tadanobu Asano have all joined the cast. Four down, forty-three to go.

Directed by Ridley Scott‘s ward, Carl Erik Rinsch, the 3D blockbuster tells the story of forty-seven samurai who force their master to commit ritual suicide after attacking a court official. They then spend years planning revenge on the official and take their own lives after his. Seems… productive? (Variety)

Darn it?

Over the weekend we reported that Keanu Reeves hinted at the possibility of two additional Matrix sequels after a screening in London. Well, it turns out that not only did this not happen, but Keanu Reeves wasn’t even in London to make this announcement. Ha! You should have seen the look on your face. The intrepid journalists over at The Playlist took the time to contact Reeves’ representatives about this announcement, and they had this to say: “none of it is true…he did not speak nor get an award from the from the London International School Performing Arts.” Whoops! All hope is not lost for you Keanu-in-3D fans out there, since the actor is set to appear in the 3D action-adventure The 47 Ronin, which is set to be released in 2012. Or IS it??

I guess this means I also have to retract my report that Keanu Reeves is an idiot. This is so embarrassing.
