Crime doesn't pay... especially if you're an idiot.

Your parents/J. Edgar Hoover used to tell you that crime doesn’t pay. What they left out was this: Crime doesn’t pay if you’re an idiot.

In honor of that valuable lesson, (and with 30 Minutes or Less coming out on DVD/Blu-ray) I’m here to show you seven of the most inept duos in cinema history. Enjoy.

Check out the assortment of Sony “Action Unleashed” DVDs!

Dwayne and Travis, 30 Minutes or Less

These two screwups (to put it mildly), played by Danny McBride and a startlingly brilliant Nick Swardson, have what seems like a good plan: Strap a time bomb to a pizza delivery guy and force him to rob a bank and hand the cash over to them. Wait, on second thought, that seems like a terrible idea. Anyway, their basic idiocy and lack of experience in criminal matters doesn’t help things. It takes more than dynamite to achieve one’s humble dream of opening a tanning salon/brothel.

Jasper and Horace, One Hundred and One Dalmatians

Like a lot of dumb criminals, Jasper and Horace aren’t bad dudes, really. But they’re working for one of the most evil villains of all time: Cruella DeVil. They basically follow the Laurel and Hardy template of “tall dumb guy, short, slightly-less dumb guy.” Funny thing: Horace (the short one) often correctly guesses what the Dalmatians are up to, maybe because he shares some kind of animal savant quality with them. Nobody ever listens to Horace though, and thank God for that – unless you’re a Dalmatian fur enthusiast.

As such, we felt the need to pay tribute to the wildly popular comedian with this compilation of awesome Aziz Ansari animated gifs. And to be honest, you’d rather watch Aziz acting stupid in animated-gif form than read anything I’m going to write.
Given the willingness of so many media figures to blame Hollywood, it's probably only a matter of time.

A bizarre ransom attempt unfolding in Australia is eerily similar to the plot of the upcoming comedy, 30 Minutes or Less. Madeleine Pulver, a teenage member of one of Sydney’s wealthiest families, was allegedly strapped with a “collar bomb” that included a ransom note demanding cash from her father William, the CEO of an international software company. The plot of 30 Minutes or Less involves a similar attack in which a hapless pizza boy is strapped with a bomb and forced to rob a bank.

Thankful, the girl has been freed from the device and reunited with her parents, and an investigation is underway into who is responsible for the crime. But you can almost hear the producers of 30 Minutes or Less panicking. The fact that the bizarre incident happened just over a week before the film’s premiere could prove to be a major headache should anyone try to pin the incident’s inspiration on the film.

At this time there is no evidence to suggest that 30 Minutes or Less inspired the attack. In fact, the film was based on an actual collar-bomb attack that occurred in Pennsylvania back in 2003. If anything, the Pennsylvania incident would seem to be the more likely culprit. But the striking similarities between the incident in Sydney and the film’s plot could prove too worrisome for film studios that have long been known to error on the side of caution.

The Arnold Schwarzenegger film Collateral Damage and several other films were delayed for months following the September 11th attacks out of fear that their terrorist-heavy plots would offend moviegoers. Obviously, the incident in Sydney is nowhere near the scale of 9-11. But even so, it’s not hard to imagine the film being delayed should a controversy arise. And given the willingness of so many media figures to blame Hollywood for every ill our society faces, it’s probably only a matter of time.

(The Herald Sun)

Zombies? Check. Robbers? Check.

The Los Angeles Film Festival’s annual Coffee Talk series began this year with the panel of directors. Ruben Fleischer, Philip Noyce and Richard Kelly shared their experiences with an audience of fans and aspiring filmmakers. Afterwards, the hung out in the hallway speaking to anyone who had a question.

Fleischer stayed over an hour and when I asked him for an interview, he was happy to continue talking about his upcoming movies, this summer’s 30 Minutes or Less and his next film, The Gangster Squad.

<a class='img' href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/video/second-30-minutes-or-less-red-band-trailer/' title='Second '30 Minutes Or Less' Red-Band Trailer'>
Second '30 Minutes Or Less' Red-Band Trailer

Q: Going from Zombieland to 30 Minutes or Less and The Gangster Squad, are you getting to do the movies you want to make?

Ruben Fleischer: Yeah, 100%. I’m lucky because I’m not a writer but I’ve happened to come across these amazing scripts. I think Zombieland and<em 30 Minutes or Less are what they are because of the scripts that started it. Now with Gangster Squad, it’s seriously one of the best scripts I’ve ever read. So the fact that I’m getting the opportunity to bring it to life is just super exciting.

Q: When you’re not a writer/director, how do you connect with someone else’s material?

RF: I guess it’s just a matter of taste. For me, Zombieland was just an original take on a genre that I wasn’t even that big of a fan of but just the sensibility and the sense of humor about it was so fresh that I guess that’s what I responded to. With Gangster Squad, it’s a genre that I love, like the classic gangster movie. This is just a really amazing version of it. It’s based on the real cops that worked to bring down Mickey Cohen in Los Angeles in 1949. It’s a really cool world, a really dramatic world, iconic movie genre. I just can’t wait to get started on it.

Q: What is location scouting like when you’re looking for a period too?

RF: It’s challenging, especially in modern Los Angeles because they’ve torn down so many of those buildings. But we have the benefit of visual effects so if we have a street that’s pretty good but there’s a McDonalds in the middle of it, we can get rid of the McDonalds. Some of the places like Union Station, City Hall, Olvera Street, they haven’t changed that much from when they were originally built. It’s just the environments maybe around them have changed so we’ll avoid that through visual effects or just creative camera angles.

4 photosJesse Eisenberg Runs From Juggalos In ’30 Minutes Or Less’ Pics

Q: With 30 Minutes or Less coming out in August, what were the demands of a summer movie on the studio level?

RF: Well, on a personal level I want it to be a successful movie, just because I feel like that’ll help me continue to get to make movies. But I also really am proud of the movie. I think it’s super funny so I want as many people to see it as possible. This summer there’s a lot of comedies, especially R-rated comedies. There’s The Change-Up Friends with Benefits Horrible Bosses Bad Teacher and our movie. I think we’re lucky because ours is the last of the comedies so hopefully it’ll stay around longer. I’m not sure but I just hope Sony promotes it and does a lot to get people into the theaters.

Q: Was the heist genre one you were fond of also?

RF: Yeah, it’s a bank heist movie and there are a lot of references to Point Break and Heat and some of my favorite heist movies in this film. I think it’s definitely an original take on a bank heist just because with the exception of I think Quick Change, there’s not that many comedy bank robbery movies. Quick Change is like the only other comedy bank robbery movie so it’s distinct because of that.

Q: Were references to Poin Break and others in the script or did those come from the actors?

RF: Point Break was definitely in the script. Heat was one just that I think anybody who loves movies just loves Heat, so we got to do our own version of Heat in a funny way.

Q: I love when movies refer to other movies because I’m thinking it even if no one says it. Why do you think a reference can be such a dirty word to people?

RF: I think there’s different versions of it. There’s people who are derivative. I guess that’s bad. Ours is almost postmodern because ours is an action comedy and we have references to Die Hard, Point Break, Beverly Hills Cop, Lethal Weapon, you name it. They’re all embedded in the movie. It’s not like Hot Fuzz in that we’re so directly referencing those movies but there’s an acknowledgment that we’re the same genre as these other movies.

Q: What prep do you have to do before you start shooting Gangster Squad?

RF: We have 12 weeks of prep. We’re going to be doing all the location scouting, finding all the actors to play all the roles, figuring out the shots, figuring out the costumes, staging how we’re going to do the action sequences. There’s just an immense amount of things to figure out.

Q: What are the action set pieces in that?

RF: It’s basically an action movie in period clothing. There’s car chases, gun fights. It’s like a classic action movie.

Q: What kind of movie would you want to do next?

RF: It’s really open. I want to see how 30 Minutes does. I want to see how Gangster turns out. Because I don’t write, I kind of just have to see what’s out there and what’s available and what script I respond to when I read it. I’m trying to make a career where I’m not just one kind of director, like I’m not just an action-comedy guy. I would love the opportunity to be able to make any sort of movie. Hopefully Gangster Squad will put me more in that direction of not just being thought of as a comedy director.

Q: Is there a genre that’s a tough sell that you’d want to use your clout to do one?

RF: Well, there’s a lot of them now but I love westerns a lot. I’m so excited for Tarantino’s. I loved True Grit. I love Leone so that would be a fun genre to explore.

Q: It seems like a lot of filmmakers want to do a western. Maybe it’s the classic Hollywood dream.

RF: That or gangster movie to me too. I love The Untouchables. I love The Godfather. I love gangster movies so this is a huge opportunity but I think a western just would be really cool.

Q: Is there one article of clothing or period prop you’re looking forward to keeping from the set?

RF: I can’t say until we’ve done it but whether it’s the guns, the hats, the trench coats, there’s going to be so many cool things to choose from. It’ll be exciting to see.

30 Minutes or Less hits theaters August 12.

Way less than 30 minutes, actually. We’re talking seconds.

Below are two new posters to go along with the recently released trailer for 30 Minutes Or Less, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Aziz Ansari. It’s based on a true story, but a crazy true story, not one of those bullshit, heartwarming true stories you see advertised every now and again. (I’m looking at you, tail-less dolphin movie.) Eisenberg plays a pizza guy assaulted by criminals played by Nick Swardson and Danny McBride. They strap a bomb to his chest and force him to rob a bank, and somehow his buddy Aziz gets involved. This has all the elements I look for in a comedy: great cast, ridiculous premise, maximum hijinx potential.

The posters feature a scared as hell Eisenberg and Ansari, mid-robbery, as well as the very first intelligent apes from Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Didn’t you know this takes place in the Apes universe? Just like in the true story its based on. (30 Minutes Or Less Official Site)

We finally have a look at Jesse Eisenberg and Aziz Ansari in the heist comedy 30 Minutes Or Less. The comedy follows Eisenberg and Ansari’s broken friendship after Eisenberg is rigged to explode unless the duo rob a bank within nine hours. As predicted, Ansari is the angry guy and Eisenberg is the guy who seems like he might wet himself at any given moment. CALLED DAT SHIT!

Although we’ve yet to see a trailer, let’s all imagine a slow-motion shot where Eisenberg and Ansari scream as their car jumps a drawbridge. In the meantime, we have the above pictures. Looks like Ansari is playing “Angry Guy,” while Eisenberg plays “Nervous Guy,” McBride plays “Redneck Guy,” and Swardson plays a Juggalo.

We’ve reported on Bad Teacher, 30 Minutes Or Less, and Anonymous before. But now we have first looks and better descriptions of the doings that transpire on-screen. Check it.

ANONYMOUS

Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds ranging from Mark Twain and Charles Dickens to Henry James and Sigmund Freud, namely: who was the author of the plays credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature. Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when cloak-and-dagger political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles hungry for the power of the throne were exposed in the most unlikely of places: the London stage.

You should also note that this drama is directed by Roland “ID4″ Emmerich. The Globe Theatre is so f*cked.

BAD TEACHER

Some teachers just don’t give an F. For example, there’s Elizabeth (Cameron Diaz). She’s foul-mouthed, ruthless, and inappropriate. She drinks, she gets high, and she can’t wait to marry her meal ticket and get out of her bogus day job. When she’s dumped by her fiancé, she sets her plan in motion to win over a rich, handsome substitute (Justin Timberlake) – competing for his affections with an overly energetic colleague, Amy (Lucy Punch). When Elizabeth also finds hersel fighting off the advances of a sarcastic, irreverent gym teacher (Jason Segel), the consequences of her wild and outrageous schemes give her students, her coworkers, and even herself an education like no other.

Drinking and drugs? I guess it’s no big deal as long as she’s not the Driver’s Ed teacher.

30 MINUTES OR LESS

In the action-comedy 30 Minutes or Less, Nick (Jesse Eisenberg) is a small town pizza delivery guy whose mundane life collides with the big plans of two wanna-be criminal masterminds (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson). The volatile duo kidnaps Nick and forces him to rob a bank. With mere hours to pull off the impossible task, Nick enlists the help of his ex-best friend, Chet (Aziz Ansari). As the clock ticks, the two must deal with the police, hired assassins, flamethrowers, and their own tumultuous relationship.

I see the major plot hole already. When it turns into a hostage situation, they’ll undoubtedly call out for pizza. Well, who’s gonna deliver it? That’s how you end up with dead hostages, my friend.
People grieve in different ways.Michael Pena and fart detective Nick Swardson are in talks to join Danny McBride and Aziz Ansari in 30 Minutes or Less. Swardson will play the best friend to McBride's rigged-to-explode pizza guy cum (titter (hee hee!)) bank robber. Pena, who we'll see opposite McBride in season two of Eastbound and Down, is in talks to play a tattooed assassin. It's a good thing that the roles aren't reversed. I can't imagine Swardson as a tattooed assassin. Mostly because I can't take an assassin with a tramp stamp seriously. I don't know. He just seems like the type. (THR)

Michael Pena and fart detective Nick Swardson are in talks to join Danny McBride and Aziz Ansari in 30 Minutes or Less. Swardson will play the best friend to McBride’s rigged-to-explode pizza guy cum (titter (hee hee!)) bank robber. Pena, who we’ll see opposite McBride in season two of Eastbound and Down, is in talks to play a tattooed assassin. It’s a good thing that the roles aren’t reversed. I can’t imagine Swardson as a tattooed assassin. Mostly because I can’t take an assassin with a tramp stamp seriously. I don’t know. He just seems like the type.
The director of Zombieland, Ruben Fleischer, is doing a movie about pizza and Aziz Ansari is in negotiations to star. 30 Minutes or Less follows an aimless delivery man who is forced to rob a bank by two goons who strap a bomb to his chest. Ansari would play the poor sap's straight-man buddy, on hand to recommend deep breaths and "stepping back and looking at the situation from a different perspective." So my headline doesn't make complete sense. Sue me. (Don't sue me). Seeing Ansari in a straight-man role would definitely be a change of pace for the actor. Not that he's a Jim Carrey type, but Ansari has been known to expend physical energy on stage, especially when discussing Coldstone Creamery. Danny McBride is rumored to play the unfortunate pizza pusher, which would set up a nice dynamic. I can already hear McBride putting his unique North Carolina twang on an Indian racial slur. (THR)
