In order to prove that they can still totally make their premiere date despite losing the film’s director, Marvel has released this first promotional still of Paul Rudd in Ant-Man. Notice that I didn’t say as Ant-Man. Filming has just started and they probably haven’t gotten around to those parts yet. Just these scenes were Paul Rudd is dressed like Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Here he stands beneath San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge with something like disgust in his eyes. Maybe a bunch of ants crawling all over an ice cream sandwich because that’s always a bummer to see and it’s not like you can just wash it off?

I think Warner Bros needs an intervention. In their haste to compete with Marvel, they’re green lighting anything featuring characters in tights. Yesterday came news that Jason Momoa has been signed to play Aquaman in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and presumably the Justice League movie after that, and today comes news that Aquaman will also star in his own standalone movie.

In a move that shows their total lack of vision, the studio has hired two screenwriters to write their own unique takes on the character. Gangster Squad writer Will Beale will script one probably terrible film while 300 writer Kurt Johnstad writes the other piece of shit. Whichever one is deemed less terrible will be the movie they spend hundreds of millions of dollars on. It’s advised that Beale and Johnstad stay away from scenes involving Aquaman diving off a pier.

Guardians of the Galaxy proved to Marvel that they can score a hit even without a title with a large built-in fan base. The brand has become the draw. Collider reports that the studio is moving forward with plans of bringing another group of cosmic superheroes to the big screen with The Inhumans. It’s reported that there’s already a script from an in-house Marvel writer while the studio is surely making arrangements to attach a director.

There’s also a rumor swirling that Vin Diesel might get involved. Over the weekend, Diesel posted on Facebook, “I get the strange feeling that Marvel thinks I’m Inhuman… Haha.” That’s not really that funny Vin but that’s okay because we really only like you for your muscles.

Having already voiced Groot in Guardians, it’s unclear if Diesel will act with his body this time. Or even be involved at all. This isn’t the first time he’s caused speculation via his Facebook page. Should he be involved, however, there’s a perfect workaround built in to The Inhumans that would allow him to play two characters in the Marvel Universe without any confusion. The group’s leader, Blackbolt, never speaks due to his destructively-powerful voice. Much like Diesel.

How Not to Do a Female-Led Superhero Film http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/how-not-to-do-a-female-led-superhero-film/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/how-not-to-do-a-female-led-superhero-film/#comments Fri, 08 Aug 2014 18:14:27 +0000 DustinSeibert http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=263894 Marvel's planning a female superhero-driven film in 2017. But will it be any good? Here's how the studio can blow it — and how they can make it great.

The post How Not to Do a Female-Led Superhero Film appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
Sony reportedly has a Marvel-based female superhero movie on deck for 2017.

Have reasons to fear.

It’s high time for a movie of its type, especially considering the increased demands for one in the face of the myriad ultra-successful, male-driven comic book films we’ve seen in the past decade or so. While there hasn’t been a female lead in a comic book film since the genre got a massive injection via the Marvel Cinematic Universe — which became the highest-grossing franchise in U.S. history — there’s absolutely a precedent for female-led superhero films, despite what many headlines would have you believe in order to earn your click. The problem is, none of them have been especially memorable. (Raise your hand if you can describe the plot of 2005′s Elektra without consulting Wikipedia.)

If Sony makes a female-fronted Marvel superhero movie, it would have to be in the Spider-Man universe, which really leaves room for only one of three characters: Spider-Woman, the mercenary Silver Sable, or the shameless Catwoman rip-off Black Cat, who was already introduced in this year’s Amazing Spider-Man 2, albeit only as her alter ego Felicia Hardy. Since Sony doesn’t own the characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, forget about seeing Scarlett Johansson head up her own Black Widow film anytime soon.

Any ideas about Sony’s plans for the movie are mere speculation at this juncture, so we have to sit on our thumbs for a while. But there are certainly ways that Sony or any other studio, for that matter — could blow a successful female-led superhero film. Here are a few:

Overly sexualize the hero: The very second thought I had the first time I saw a picture of Halle Berry’s Catwoman (right after “Hmm, where’d I put the Jergens?”) was, “This movie is gonna be a massive failstick.” Lo and behold, it was totally execrable. Tim Burton got away with camping up Batman and Catwoman in 1992, but in 2004 — during a period when superhero films were moving away from silliness — Halle’s take on the character was the essence of eye-rolling. Any contemporary female superhero in film needs to be sexy by default, but her sexuality needs to be matched by a heaping helping of smarts and savvy for her to be taken seriously.

Crappy casting: I wrote a little about this already, but the importance of good casting to the success of a female-driven superhero movie can’t be understated. It’s arguably even more important than a male character-driven film, because nerdboys have very specific ideas in their minds about the women they see in comic books and the actresses they see playing them – it’s like a spank bank for which Bob Kane is the proprietor. I was surprised Elektra even got made considering the spectacular awfulness of its predecessor, 2003’s Daredevil, but Jennifer Garner never belonged in this role to begin with. Elektra needed to be a played by a kick-ass, dark-haired, olive-skinned Latina or Greek goddess (think Maria Menounos with a dye job and some acting skills), not the chick who relegates herself to bad Matthew McConaughey rom-coms.

Making a movie around a throwaway character(s): Perhaps the most obvious challenge of a female-driven comic superhero flick is the disproportionately small number of lady characters that matter to the public at large. Sure, you have folks coming out in droves to see The Hunger Games’ Katniss Everdeen and Divergent’s Beatrice Prior (a.k.a. Family Dollar’s Katniss Everdeen) on the big screen, but the YA set has way more cred among money-dropping moviegoers than buxom comic characters. Even Wonder Woman arguably the most popular female comic book character of all time — has been plagued by failure in attempts to adapt her for the big and small screens. There’s no way any of the female X-Men could carry their own film with their current actresses (except maybe Ellen Page’s Shadowcat), and I’ve seen nothing about a She-Hulk film. Vampirella has been done so poorly in the movies that I can’t see anyone turning around that bus. DC’s Birds of Prey is a cool group, but Christopher Nolan set the bar so high for films in the Batman world that I don’t know if anyone can tackle it again without face-planting…though we’ll find out soon enough.

A new film without introduction from a previous film: Again, Wonder Woman is probably the safest bet for her own movie in 2014, but even she’s getting ushered in via Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Marvel Studios could absolutely make a movie where Johansson carries the mantle as the lead in a Black Widow film, but she’s been in three films already. Sony releasing a Black Cat flick makes the most since the studio is boning up to create a “cinematic universe” around Spider-Man, and she’s already been introduced. But not enough people appreciated ASM2, and if Sony can sh*t out three or four more movies in that universe that moviegoers will care about, I’d be surprised. Under the right author, Jessica Drew’s Spider-Woman is a fantastic, compelling character, so hopefully Sony can incorporate her in future Spider-Man sequels so she can get her own film.

Think inside the box: As an avid comic reader, I realize that the world of comic book adaptations shouldn’t begin and end with Marvel and DC. My favorite female comic book lead in recent years is the titular character in Garth Ennis’ excellent Jennifer Blood. She’s a complicated anti-hero in every way, and a well-done, hard-R-rated movie around her could truly resonate with people. Hack/Slash, an indie title that sends up the slasher film genre – complete with ample blood and boobs – is reportedly being worked into a film. However, the lead character, Cassie Hack, has to be carefully cast: she’s smoking hot and frequently scantily clad, but she’s not a bimbo, and methinks whomever will be at the helm of that film will have difficulty navigating those waters. While not technically a super power, I’d love to see S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Maria Hill get her own vehicle, as she’s one of the most ass-kicking female characters who also has a personality. Finally, Greg Rucka’s Batwoman, an open lesbian forced out of the military for “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” is ripe for a film that the big studios probably aren’t progressive enough to tackle just yet.

As we all know, the most frightening, scariest battles among superpowers are those to take control of premiere summer release dates. Early May is generally considered the summer kickoff, and a big film usually accompanies that time frame. For 2016, both Batman V. Superman and Captain America 3 were both laying claim to it.

Well, after the success of Guardians of the Galaxy this week, which was dwarfed only by the success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, DC Comics has laid down its sword, falling back to a REALLY early March 25th release date.

Does this mean that DC Comics and the powers that be over there are all a bunch of pussies?

Yes. They’re scared of a guy with a shield. Totally lame. I mean, DC has Batman and Superman, and I think in two years, we’re going to be so sick of Marvel films that there will be riots in the theaters (don’t hold me to that).

So, Marvel wins, Captain America gets to send out a save the date, and the other movie will premiere when America is snowboarding and shotgunning beers on spring break.

The Eight Coolest Post-Credits Scenes in Movies http://www.screenjunkies.com/general/the-eight-coolest-post-credits-scenes-in-movies/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/general/the-eight-coolest-post-credits-scenes-in-movies/#comments Wed, 06 Aug 2014 12:13:53 +0000 DustinSeibert http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=263746 Marvel didn't start the trend of hidden post-credits scenes. Here are a few of our favorites.

The post The Eight Coolest Post-Credits Scenes in Movies appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
The Marvel Cinematic Universe, with its now de rigueur post-credits “hidden” scenes, has kept legions of viewers’ asses plopped firmly in their Fanta-stained seats well after the final credits start rolling. The latest MCU post-credits scene, following the conclusion of Guardians of the Galaxy, is too good to ruin here, but I’ll say two spoiler-free things about it: It fit in perfectly with the tone of the movie itself, and it will likely go over the heads of most people under age 30.

For any teenaged readers who thought Marvel was the progenitor of this post-credit-scene business, think again — it’s been going on for decades. Early on, though, it was a rare and unexpected thing that most people found out about only after someone said, “Did you stay until the very end??” Because there was no YouTube, people either had to pay to see the film again in theaters or wait until it came out on VHS to see the scene.

Some of the best post-credits sequences tease sequels (some of which never happened), put a little cherry on top of the material you just saw, or feature an outtake or off-script riffing (which happen more commonly during end credits these days). Some of our favorite post-credits scenes on this list are simply ones that make me reminisce on my childhood.

Which reminds me: YouTube Powers That Be, how can you NOT have a video sequence of Raul Julia’s M. Bison sticking his hand out of the rubble after the credits of 1994′s Street Fighter?!?? That’s classic stuff!

Kill Bill (2003) – This quickie scene is an outtake of Uma Thurman’s Beatrix Kiddo ripping an eyeball out of a member of the Crazy 88 army, clearly delighting in it. It should get fans excited for the rumored upcoming release of both Kill Bill films combined.

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) – This 45-second sequence is just as irreverent as the movie that preceded it; while it worked back then, it now serves as a reminder that the Ron Burgundy schtick is kinda played out after a decade. Raise your hand if you actually *loved* Anchorman 2. Thought so.

The Fast and the Furious (2001) – This scene shows Vin Diesel’s Dominic driving through Baja, having successfully escaped the cops in the states. It set the pace for a franchise continuity that’s 13 years and running. Fast and Furious films are awesome. More please.

Lethal Weapon 3 (1992) – Because this is footage of an actual building being demolished, I am pretty sure the filmmakers didn’t pay for it considering it’s a scene that few people would see, because people didn’t stay past the credits in 1992. My guess is the building was being blown to bits anyway, so they filmed it and had Mel Gibson and Danny Glover dubbed talking in character over the video. Pretty lazy, if you ask me.

Iron Man (2008) – Since the original Iron Man was the first movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (and arguably still the best), its post-credits scene introducing Samuel L. Jackson as (black!) Nick Fury is still the most memorable, as it left nerdboys salivating for what MCU had to offer. With few exceptions, it hasn’t let us down.

Crank (2006) – Made when people were still funding Jason Statham-led films, Crank wasn’t very memorable in general. But its post-credits sequence — a 16-second recap of the film reimagined as a 16(ish)-bit video game — is cool mainly because it’s so unique.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) – An awesome film from the roota to the toota that aged remarkably well, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off kept viewers watching throughout the end credits roll, only for Ferris to tell everyone to shove off. If there’s an earlier post-credits scene that matters, I know nothing about it.

Masters of the Universe (1987) - Every little snot-nosed ’80s kid loved He-Man, and the live-action movie was extra-awesome. For little boys, that is. Everyone else hated it, which means Skeletor was never able to make good on his Ahnuld-esque “I’ll be back” post-credits promise.

Sony recently announced that they were pushing back the next installment of Spider-Man because it’s not doing as well as other Marvel films (my guess), so some bandwidth in the studio will allow for a new film. Of course, this too will be a superhero film, because those are the only films that exist any more.

As the headline so tactfully conveys, there are no further details, other than it will be released in 2017, and it will feature a woman superhero, perhaps in response to the clamor that there are no female superhero movies. Ok. Fine. It will be a superhero from the Spider-Man universe, of which most people know very little. But they’ll be educated. Oh, how they’ll be educated!

Spider-Man‘s answer to The Avengers, Sinister Six, will arrive in theaters in 2016, and will no doubt give us much of the backstory we don’t really need when plopping in front of a superhero film.

THANK GOD.

I mean, five years ago would have been a better time — before the deluge of Marvel films at the box office — but considering that Marvel and Disney have pretty much earmarked every single weekend in the future for some sort of Marvel film, you might as well bone up on the world they’ve created.

This video makes it easy to follow every little inside joke in the universe. It’s not exactly Marvel 101, but if you’ve seen some of the films, this could offer a little depth in what may have otherwise just seemed like big summer fare.

Educate yourself and enjoy.

With Guardians of the Galaxy breaking box office numbers as I type this and The Avengers: Age of Ultron set to dominate next summer, Marvel has decided to take a moment to breathe, step back, and have a good look at how they got to a film about a machine-gunnin’ raccoon. Posted to their official YouTube page, this recap covers the major events of Phase One and Phase Two (so far) and it cuts together so well.

Marvel made history by creating so many intricate connections between their diverse array of films as that’s pointed out here. The video covers everything from Iron Man to Guardians of the Galaxy (and even includes footage from Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk because we can’t ignore that those happened) ending on a shot of formerly-teased villain Thanos resting upon his floating throne of rock. Excelsior!

So which actors and actresses came closer to their comic book counterparts?

The post Gallery: Rating the Big-Screen Counterparts of Comic Book Characters appeared first on Screen Junkies.

It’s inherently difficult to get flesh-and-blood women to replicate the impossibly buxom and Amazonian character models of our favorite comic book characters. It can be done (see: Wrestler-turned-porn-chick Chyna as She-Hulk in the X-rated Avengers parody), but some filmmakers aren’t even trying that hard.

Take Zoe Saldana, who plays Gamora in Marvel’s new Guardians of the Galaxy flick. Saldana is a certified hottie whose star is burning bright right now, but the problem with the casting is Gamora is often drawn as a 6-foot-plus green badass who could break your soul with her thighs, and Zoe is a 5-foot-7 waif who’s always in desperate need of a cheeseburger.

It’s the same issue with Israeli actress Gal Gadot, who will play Wonder Woman in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice film. Princess Diana’s always had an imposing frame that put her on par — or ahead of — her male superhero counterparts. Gadot, though, looks like she’s never done a bicep curl in her life, which hasn’t been lost on Wonder Woman fans.

You can’t please everyone when it comes to casting iconic characters. But when it’s done right, few people will complain. Here, we examine some comic adaptation castings that were right on the money, and some that were a giant failstick. Scroll through the gallery above for the best and worst examples, accompanied by our totally scientific rating system.

All signs point to Guardians of the Galaxy, despite being based on lesser-known source material from Marvel, making an absolute killing at the box office this weekend. And the next weekend. And probably on DVD. And PPV. And merchandising.

While the tools used predict such information are a little “inside baseball” and foreign (focus groups, ouija boards, surveys) we got our first real piece of evidence today when it was revealed that last night the film took in $11.2 million, which is more than Captain America, the year’s high-water mark, did in its first night.

The predictors are expecting $40-$50 million tonight, with the weekend totaling $80-$90+ million.

In any event, the film is all but guaranteed to have the biggest August opening ever for a film, eclipsing The Bourne Ultimatum’s $69 million.

Yay, Hollywood revenues. It’s nice to know that these studio execs will finally see some money from their hard work.

By Jared Jones

It’s rather fitting that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy would be the first film I’d review for Screen Junkies, as it’s a movie that seems damn near impossible to critique. Sure, Guardians adheres to many of the conventions we’ve come to expect from a comic book movie (dead parents, cryptically-introduced characters who speak entirely in exposition, etc.), and betrays most of its plot conventions before they are even established, but its absolute refusal to take itself seriously doesn’t exactly open the door for criticism.

Of course, then you see a wisecracking racoon unleash a barrage of machine gun fire while riding on the back of a talking treebeast, and you nearly pass out from the deluge of blood that rushes from your head to your nerd boner.

Guardians of the Galaxy can best be described as a two-hour montage set to a 1970′s Jock Jams mixtape, complete with some of the most intense and plain beautiful CGI your puny eyes may ever gaze upon. It’s the kind of movie Pete Hammond would describe as an “uproarious, fun-filled thrill ride!” while sucking on the taint of whatever PR firm had hired him to write it. For once, his blatant hyperbole would be accurate.

The story is a rather familiar one in terms of comic book adaptations: Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is abducted by a gang of intergalactic mercenaries (led by the always delightful Michael Rooker) after watching his mother succumb to cancer, and twenty some-odd years later, he is roaming the galaxy as a common, if wickedly inventive thief. That is, until he stumbles upon the Infinity Stone capable of destroying entire civilizations (DUN-DUN-DUN!) and is forced to band together with a crew of misfits and miscreants in order to save the galaxy. Yadda yadda yadda hijinks ensue.

But yes, back to the CGI. As someone who has always preferred his world-building to take place in our actual world, even I must admit that Guardians was able to create the kind of exceptionally detailed, fully realized CGI-scapes that make paying the extra $10 for 3D glasses worth it. Not that I have to, being a fancy film critic that I am now and all (*spins bow tie*). The post-opening credits scene, which sees Quill a.k.a “Star Lord” shimmy his way across a barren planet to steal the Casket of Ancient Winters/Tesseract/whatever, was the highlight for me in that regard. The whole sequence plays out like a steampunk take on the 1912 Utah opening from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and if you can’t get into that, the door is right over there.

That said, the inevitable success of Guardians will ultimately (and rightfully) be attributed to its cast and the witty repartee they develop. Marvel movies — and really, any comic book adaptation — only shine when they opt for the absurdist route, in my opinion, and director James Gunn‘s script never once pauses to talk about “destiny” or “fate” or whatever hackneyed cliches often punctuate comic book faire. A gravel-voiced Christian Bale speaking in platitudes about the moral weight that comes with being a cape-wearing crime fighter? I fart in your general direction, sir. A gravel-voiced Dave Bautista discussing his inability to understand metaphor? I’ll take two, please.

*Every* character in Guardians is the comic relief, Zoe Saldana‘s somewhat flat Gamora excluded, and that’s what makes the movie such a fun, effortless experience to watch. That, and the breakneck pace at which the film itself moves, because good God, does this flick hustle information past you like an irritated flight attendant on a frat bro-filled plane to Spring Break, Cancun. But on top of it all, Guardians of the Galaxy is just funny, plain and simple. Who would’ve guessed that a WWE star not named The Rock has legitimate comedic timing, or that Vin Diesel repeating the same line of dialogue over and over and over again would never not be hilarious? Spoiler alert: Bautista kills it, and I want a baby Groot-sized potted plant on my desk ASAP.

If I could lob one legitimate criticism at Guardians, it would be that of its villains. As I’ve noticed in more and more blockbuster action movies to come out in recent years, Guardians in the Galaxy would like you to believe that its bad guys — mainly, the Vader-esque Ronan — are all-powerful, menacing, genocidal killers, yet it never really commits to that narrative or establishes what exactly is motivating them (other than the classic standby of “world destruction”). Ronan and his cronies are merely blips on the radar who pop up when needed to cause a little mayhem, but they never really give the impression that they possess the destructive power that warrants the fear they instill.

Guardians’ PG-13 rating is most likely to blame for the movie’s lack of any real stakes or sense of impending doom, and I guess that’s forgivable. But just once, I’d like to see a quote unquote “popcorn flick” have the balls to actually commit to decisions it makes. If you’re going to kill off a character, kill off a character. If you’re going to have one character betray another, maybe establish a relationship between the two that last more than 30 seconds to give said betrayal some actual gravitas.

It’s a minor complaint in an otherwise glowing review, but something Marvel should maybe consider when developing Guardians of the Galaxy 2-8. Oh, did you not know that this movie is going to a box office juggernaut greenlit for a sequel by night’s end? Or that Chris Pratt is probably the next king of the box office? Because yeah, that’s all about to happen.

Grade: B+

At the Marvel panel at Comic-Con (which I’m guessing is a pretty big deal), it was announced, in the wake of news that James Gunn will be writing and directing the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, that the franchise will also spinoff an animated series.

It’s no surprise that the series will air on Disney XD, considering the recent(ish) acquisition of Marvel by Disney. The property will join Avengers Assemble and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., which are both getting picked up by the network for second seasons. Seriously, there’s a cartoon called Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., and it’s getting a second season.

Marvel is seems to be going fairly apeshit with its expansion since the Disney synergy emerged. In addition to the half-dozen secret movie release dates, they’ve got Daredevil on Netflix, Marvel’s Agent Carter coming to television, and probably fourteen other things I’m forgetting because there are just too damn many.

In order to keep feeding the beast of high-profile release dates that Marvel/Disney has staked out for the next four years or so, there’s no time for annual evaluations and strategic meetings. There’s your gut, and there’s following what it has to say. And Marvel’s gut is saying that Guardians of the Galaxy is going to be huge, that James Gunn did a great job writing and directing, and that he should be hired for the second one with no more discussion.

And so it shall be.

Gunn has been picked up to write and direct the next installment of the film (release date July 28, 2017). I don’t entirely understand the virtue in making this announcement now, before the first one premieres. I mean, it’s not like he won’t have three years to film and edit the sequel. My guess is this is something of a marketing move, with Marvel demonstrating just how confident they are that this movie is going to kick ass.

It’s like booking a Super Bowl trip while your team is in the Wild Card hunt. Only the Wild Card hunt is a raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper. Or the Super Bowl is voiced by Bradley Cooper. Shit. I think I screwed up this analogy.

In this age of superhero blockbuster decadence, it doesn’t even seem possible to make things too big. The Avengers represents like five franchises, Batman is fighting Superman, and the crossover opportunities seem endless.

However, could worlds really collide to bring us Superman in a Star Wars world? Or, far less likely, vice versa?

Almost certainly not, but when Zack Snyder Tweeted out this image of the Man of Steel holding a lightsaber, it sure did get people talking about what’s to be discussed at his upcoming panel at Comic-Con.

Of course, Warner Bros works with DC, and Disney owns Marvel (and Star Wars), so there’s no natural fit, nor is there much incentive for Disney to play nice with the enemy.

But still, you’ve got our attention you crafty marketer, Mr. Snyder. So what the hell does this represent, other than our gullibility?

Disney knows that they’ve got a good thing going with Marvel, and, rather than exercise their usual restrain when it comes to scheduling releases, Disney/Marvel has taken to announcing one superhero movie after another, with little to no plot details or even a title.

And we got one more at Comic-Con yesterday, as they politely asked attendees to clear their schedule for May 4th, 2018. I have an aromatherapy appointment that day, but I should be free by 4:00 or so if anyone wants to go see the last matinee.

Seriously, nothing beyond that is known, just like with their other 5 (FIVE!) TBA blockbusters dates. So to summarize, leave open (courtesy of Jen Yamato from Deadline): July 28 and November 3rd, 2017, July 6 and November 2nd, 2018, the above May date, and then May 3rd, 2019.

You’ll know more about these mystery films when we do.

It took them long enough, but now, DC Comics has watched Marvel’s success and thought to themselves, “Hey, we can make some money with this comic book stuff.” So with Dawn of Justice coming up in a year or so, DC continues to set the table for Justice League movies, spinoffs, and all the other crap we’ve seen from Marvel.

When both DC and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson realized that he had never been a comic book hero before, they worked to fix that as soon as possible. In a recent interview with Total Film, The Rock hints at a role, then gets less and less subtle about it.

“Just say the word” is a very thinly veiled reference to Shazam, a DC character who gets his powers by saying “Shazam.” I don’t know if it’s proper style to ever write “shazam” without following it with at least one exclamation point, but I’m yielding on matters of style to DC here.

The role sounds imminent, but we’ll probably be able to see him in the Superman/Batman film or the next one.

In the meantime, start spouting off gibberish words with enthusiasm to see if they grant you special powers.

We won’t have to wait too long to see more of Deborah Ann Woll after True Blood ends its creepy monster porn run in the coming weeks. She’s headed over to Netflix for a lead role in Marvel’s Daredevil. Woll will play Karen Page, the love interest of Matt Murdock, the blind attorney who fights crime as the man without fear. I guess that makes him really good around women. If I were ever in a one-on-one conversation with Deborah Ann Woll, I’d be so intimidated that I stutter like a SQMY disc player before hiding behind a potted plant.

Woll has a unique connection to the role already. Her real-life boyfriend is losing his vision due to choroideremia and the two publicly campaign to fight the rare genetic disorder, which I guess spares him from having to watch this season of True Blood. (EW)

There seems to be a diversity memo flying around the Marvel comic book offices pretty quickly these days. Not only did the company announce that Thor will become a woman (in print for right now), but Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada took to The Colbert Report to announce that Captain America will be black, starting this fall.

How does a white character become black? Because this is the world of comic books, where anything can happen. But more specifically, it will happen in a storyline in which the original Cap’n, Steve Rogers, will be replaced by Sam Wilson, aka, The Falcon due to Rogers’ weakening powers. Sam Wilson was played by Anthony Mackie in the most recent film adaptation, and would be a great Captain America, but so far this change is only being discussed in the comics themselves.

See? That was easy.

I guess the harder part will diversifying the bland names of the characters, and yes, I’m looking directly at “Peter Parker” as I say that.

It’s hard to describe the vibe of Big Hero Six with the written word. But about ten seconds in to the trailer, you’ll get it. While Marvel went live-action with The Avengers, Disney and Marvel teamed up to give us an animated Big Hero Six that has a look very similar to Ratatouille, which should be just fine with Pixar fans.

The Big Hero Six originally were a decidedly Japanese-inspired group of superheroes, but in this trailer, they take on a cartoonish American quality. Maybe it’s because they’re characters in an American cartoon. We’ll never know for sure.

As we’ve seen with the crazy box office business drummed up by The Avengers and it’s many spinoffs, the big idea these days is to assemble a group of characters, release some films with all of them, then release some individual films, then become REALLY rich.

We see DC Comics beginning to do it with Justice League, featuring Batman, Aquaman, and all the other men, and Marvel’s even doing it again with Spider-Man and his weird group of friends.

However, Universal doesn’t want to limit the opportunity to just comic book characters, as it’s supposedly assembling all it’s classic monster characters from it’s really old movies, like Van Helsing, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, and all those other people you grandfather won’t stop talking about. The premise kicks off in 2016 with a new Mummy film that presumably won’t have Brendan Fraser in it, but who knows?

We’re a week away from San Diego Comic-Con 2014 and Marvel is already stealing the show by releasing the first official look at The Avengers: Age of Ultron titular android. From the looks of things, you won’t even miss Loki.

As suspected, Ultron’s origin has been adapted to fit better in the established cinematic universe that Marvel has been building. The robot that will kill us all is created when Tony Stark hatches a plan to outsource his superheroing so he and The Avengers can spend more time enjoying shawarma bro-hangs. However, you can’t give a robot James Spader‘s voice and expect it not to start acting full-tilt creepy. In its pursuit to protect humanity, Ultron reasons that humanity needs to be wiped out. What a dense robot.

The Avengers must band together once again to take out this man-made threat. And, because it’s Joss Whedon, presumably give Tony Stark a good ribbing too.

Why? Doesn’t matter. Thor‘s a woman now. Goddess of Thunder.

Lady Thor will make her debut in a new comic series, and it’s rumored that the change is only temporary, but I think I speak for everyone involved when I say that if Lady Thor makes it to the big screen, we’d like to see the Natalie Portman love interest storyline continued, if not escalated.

Guardians of the Galaxy is back with an extended trailer to further convince you to see the film. It also does a great job of convincing me to download “Cherry Bomb” by The Runaways.

Marvel screened 17 minutes of footage from the film in IMAX and if the early reactions can be trusted, this film is going to be massive. According to Latino Review, the 3D is used to great effect for the sequences set in space. Think Gravity with much more to look at than Sandra Bullock’s face pasted on an astronaut’s body.

Performance-wise, Chris Pratt‘s muscles are about to become straight up celebrities and parents are going to have to be ever vigilant if they want to stop their children from approaching raccoons. Sounds like Marvel’s streak will continue. It’s their galaxy. We just live in it.

Marvel has finally heard your cries to put Nathan Fillion in one of their things. Although, not in the role you’d want him and in an extremely small dose. After the actor, who would make a great Ant-Man, hinted that he might appear in Guardians of the Galaxy, director James Gunn confirmed that, yes, Fillion shows up and does stuff in the movie. Gunn tweeted that Fillion “has a very small fun cameo he did as a favor to me.”

There you have it, nerds. You persisted and kinda got what you wanted. Now, let’s get to work on Neil Patrick Harris as Doctor Strange.

Fox hasn’t gotten QUITE as busy as some of the other studios with its superhero roster of films, but what it lacks in quantity, it might be going for in quality. Since Fox doesn’t have a Marvel or DC at its disposal, it’s going with the smaller, dare I say “grittier” adaptations of graphic novels.

Most recently, Fox has announced that it will be telling the story of Malignant Man, a dude who’s diagnosed with terminal cancer, only to find that the tumor is actually a parasite that gives him super powers. Fun for the whole family, no?

The film version will likely be directed by James Wan, who is currently hard at work on Fast & Furious 7.

If you’re excited about this project, you may want to take a breath, though. It’s currently not slated until 2017.
