Even with a micro-budget, the tour was still financially a loss, but was probably the best marketing I could have done for the money. It can be done for smaller filmmakers as well. His model certainly won't work for an unknown, but someone has to successfully break studio control to start a trend. My understanding is that his goal is to leverage his popularity to forge a path. Both have significant followings, thus are able to capitalize on their work without corporate backing. Most other artists that have attempted to follow Reznor's example are in the same financial boat as they would have been with major label backing. I fail to see how movies would be any different, except initial costs are much higher, leading to an even greater decrease in efficacy. I said it doesn't work for most small-time filmmakers without any clout. Even though a small time film maker will have a smaller budget, he's still going to have a difficult time recouping his investment without the power Smith has. If Smith had tried to self-distribute 17 years ago instead of selling his film, we wouldn't be talking about him right now. I didn’t say it could never work for anyone else. How is this "Complete B.S."? The only point you made is Kevin Smith is popular, so it's feasible that he can recoup $4 million without an over inflated advertising budget. But if an indie filmmaker makes a file for $100 thousand (clerks was shot for $27 thousand), they wouldn't need Smith's clout. I think Smith is doing something very noble and putting his name on the line to do so. Yeah, that does sound like complete BS.
