Ever since the announcements that Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard (both of Christopher Nolan‘s Inception) were going to be in The Dark Knight Rises, there’s been a frenzy of speculation over who they’re going to play. It turns out the official announcement is kind of anti-climax – they’re both playing characters you’ve probably never heard of:
“Gordon-Levitt will play John Blake, a Gotham City cop. Cotillard will play Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member who wants to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors.”
Now we know! As far as I (and Wikipedia) know, these are not characters from any Batman comics, but instead are original creations for the movie. Kind of strange that they don’t even share a name with any major comics characters, but I guess that’s The Nolan Touch at work.

Yeah, I agree. I’m not a big fan of Robin as a character so maybe I’m biased, but I just don’t see him fitting in Nolan’s Batman universe.
