Warner Bros. is getting close to landing a vampire movie. Before you roll your eyes and chuck your box set of”True Blood” at your Twilight poster, hear the rest out. The movie, Harker, is a retelling of Bram Stoker‘s Dracula, and the Scotland Yard detective on Dracula‘s tail. What it doesn’t say is when the film will take place, though a modern setting or a Victorian one could both be interesting backdrops for the familiar story.
Also lending this project legitimacy is the fact that Leonardo Dicaprio‘s production company, Appian Way, is throwing its weight behind the project. DiCaprio has no intention of starring in the film, which is probably a blessing, as I’m sick of seeing him as a cop and can’t imagine him as Dracula.
If all goes well with this film, Appian Way would like to establish Jonathan Harker, the Scotland Yard detective, as a franchise character, having him pursue more villains of lore in future installments. The film has of course been fast-tracked, though no production dates have been given. The way I see it, they’ve got about seven weeks before people throw in the towel and trade their vampire allegiances for zombie ones. Or maybe by that time, audiences will want to seeing him chase down Julian Assange. (Deadline)
