The only thing less convincing than Tom Cruise portraying a gruff drifter would be Tom Cruise playing a 6′ 5″, 250-pound cop. So it should come as little surprise that Tom Cruise is in negotiations to play a 6′ 5″ 250-pound former cop-turned-gruff-drifter in One Shot, the film adaptation of the Jack Reacher character featured in 15 novels. One Shot follows Reacher as he investigates a sniper that has murdered five people already.
The project would come before Cruise fades into Oblivion, Joseph Kosinski‘s pet project. TC has clearly had his eye on the Jack Reacher character for a while, as he optioned One Shot over five years ago with producing partner Paula Wagner.
When asked about the obvious disparity between Tom Cruise and someone who is intimidating, as Reacher is portrayed in the books, author Lee Child weaseled out of the question thusly, “Reacher’s size in the books is a metaphor for at unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way.” Like with bright white teeth and wanton use of the word “glib.” A real terror, that one.
