In a move that takes a time-honored fantasy epic and peppers it with a bit of self-referential winking that will delight Tolkien purists, Peter Jackson has decided that The Hobbit can't be told without a Stephen Colbert cameo.

Colbert has long expressed his fascination with fantasy works, namely The Hobbit, and told Playboy in an interview that he visited the set in New Zealand earlier this year at director Peter Jackson's invitation, so the news isn't all THAT surprising. In the interview, found here, Colbert not-so-subtly deflects questions about his involvement as an extra.

Given the timing, it's assumed he won't be making the appearance in December's An Unexpected Journey, but one of the other ones with a really nerdy name. Something like The Peasant's Requiem of an Orc or some crap.
