Slow News Day: Tim Burton Bows Out Of Disney’s ‘Maleficent’

With over 2 billion similar fairy tale movie projects in the works, there has to be room for one more, right? For money’s sake?

That was the question propelling the development of Maleficent, a live-action Disney feature a la Alice In Wonderland, which will tell the story of Sleeping Beauty from the evil witch’s point of view. Tim Burton was attached to direct and Angelina Jolie to star. It was to be a magnificent celebration of green screens and Hot Topic friendly character designs.

Then a Disney executive accidentally touched a spinning wheel or something and Tim Burton dropped out. Now the studio is scrambling for a new director to helm the project, written by Alice In Wonderland scribe Linda Woolverton. Jolie is still attached, but I guess if Johnny Depp isn’t involved in some way, Burton loses interest. (Hollywood Reporter)
