A few years ago Richard Linklater made Bernie, based on the true story of Bernie Tiede, a polite mortician who murdered the old woman with whom he shared an unlikely friendship. The existence of the film has caused lawyers to reopen Tiede's case and they've found enough evidence to free him from his life sentence. But without any old women around who are willing to take him in, Richard Linklater has agreed to fulfill that role.

Linklater testified on Tiede's behalf this past Tuesday and offered him the apartment above his garage. Judges agreed to release him under Linklater's care but with the condition that he doesn't murder anyone else. If he does, they'll make him go live with Mike White. (The Statesman)
