Melissa Leo won an Oscar, and got to drop an Academy Award winning f-bomb, for her portrayal of boxing manager mom Alice Ward in The Fighter. In January, Ward had a cardiac arrest, and after a long bout with illness, died today at the age of 79 in a Boston hospital.
Ward was the fiesty mother of nine children, including boxers Dicky Eklund and “Irish” Mickey Ward, portrayed in the movie by Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg. Both Bale and Leo gave Ward shout-outs in various awards speeches. Bale described her as “one tough cookie,” which is the nicest way possible to describe a fiery older woman. Science has proven this in several studies. (TheWrap)
