Mayans Be Damned, ‘Avatar’ Sequels Are Three Years Out

Monday, January 24 by

This next piece of news will cause streaks in your blue face paint, Avatards. The good news is that James Cameron plans to shoot two Avatar sequels back-to-back. The bad news is that you’ll be dressing ridiculously for a long, long time to come. Cameron tells EW:

“I am in the process of writing the next two Avatar films now. We are planning to shoot them together and post them together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart. Christmas ’14 and ’15 is the current plan.”

So run that estimate through the James Cameron technology development filter… multiply by future chance of 3D fatigue… carry over the one… five years. We’ll probably be waiting five years. Sadly, Giovanni Ribisi may lose his boyish looks by then. Oh yeah, he’s probably going to come back for the sequel.

“Basically, if you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form.”

So, just like Nightmare On Elm Street 4? Except better for the oceans.

“Fox has partnered with me to donate a chunk of the profits to environmental causes that are at the heart of the Avatar world. I didn’t want to make more Avatar movies without a grander plan in place.”

Almost makes up for the pollutants rendered while producing 3D glasses. Ah, the Circle Of Life.
