Vin Diesel has decided to parlay his Fast 5 heat into a starring and producer gig on The Machine, an MGM action comedy. According to the studio, Diesel will be playing "a human-like machine created in secrecy by the Pentagon as the world's first true ultimat weapon." Playing an emotionless robot should be right in Diesel's wheelhouse.

While the premise is hardly inspired, and the "action-comedy" tag has sent shivers down my spine since Cop Out, there is reason to get excited about this project. The team behind the script consists of Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, alums of both "Reno 911!" and "The State." They worked with Diesel on The Pacifier and Herbie Fully Loaded, so their track record as screenwriters is beyond reproach.

In case there was any question, Diesel's robo fighting machine does end up befriending a young boy. Once again, Diesel will show us what robots are really capable of. (THR)
