Johnny Depp, having shown an affinity for playing historical characters, will be tackling one more that made news recently: Whitey Bulger. The Irish mobster who served as the inspiration for Jack Nicholson's Frank Costello in The Departed was arrested almost three years ago after decades on the run.

Black Mass will tell usual rise-and-fall story of Bulger. This casting news, along with the film's pursuit of Tom Hardy as the FBI man on his case, could knock several other competing projects out of the water. The most notable of which would be Ben Affleck's take, written by Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire scribe Terrence Winter.

I don't know much else about the Depp film, but I do know that you don't just go around keeping Ben Affleck from making movies about Boston. That's a dangerous game, my friend.
