Jeremy Renner, Who’s Gone All ‘Hollywood’ Now, Reportedly Offered Lead In ‘Bourne 4′

Friday, April 1 by

Reports are trickling in, after an exclusive by Latino Review, that Jeremy Renner is about to get the offer to play the lead role (not Jason Bourne) in the next installments of the franchise. This makes sense, after a field that was rumored to include no less than: Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch, Kellan Lutz, Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer and Benjamin Walker (via Playlist) seemed to be a little heavy on the pretty boys. Bourne has always been a slightly grittier take on the genre, so Renner seems to be a good fit, despite his involvement in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.

Again, this is just an offer, so it’s not known whether Renner will take the role should this story pan out, but it clearly demonstrates that the producers don’t want to venture too far from what made the first three installments work, which is fine by me. Here’s to hoping this pans out and the next Bourne hero isn’t Alex Pettyfer.

    But he’s just so…….bland

Perhaps I would think he’s too bland for a jilted husband or a reluctant messiah, but I think he is the right level of robotic for ‘Bourne’. This character never had heart, and after seeing Renner play Dahmer, I’m inclined to get excited about this one, heart be damned.

I see your point, but the thing about Damon as Bourne was his conflicted nature, he did the cool calm ‘robotic’ assassin thing well, but it was the underlying decency of the character that compelled you to watch and appreciate Damon’s performance, his portrayal did have heart, it’s why we root for him, even though he’s basically a horrible brainwashed killer.
Of course the new movie wont even feature Jason Bourne, from what I’ve read it will focus on another operative from Treadstone/Blackbriar/Whatever, which means a new direction hopefully, unless they’re going to do yet another Hitman-who-has-a-soul thing again (yawn, isn’t every film about professional killers the same story?)

I think I agree with you, JIM. That was one of the real draws of the Damon-led Bourne franchise. And Renner has played so many out of control assholes in the last few years that I struggle to envision him in a role where I really connect and feel for his conflicted emotions. However, I do think he’s a stellar actor, and as such, will probably pull this off and make me a believer.

It was the same way with Kurtwood Smith for me. I couldn’t shake the memories of him in Dead Poets Society, even though he was hilarious as Red (in that 70’s show – for those of you who were dead or not from earth during their run).
