It has been decided by the powers at Fox that one actor is suitably frowny above all others. Inside Llewyn Davis star Oscar Isaac has once again taken a titular role with his casting in X-Men: Apocalypse. Apologies to Jake Johnson.

Here Isaac will play the mutant, Apocalypse, the world’s most powerful mutant born in ancient Egypt. His advanced healing abilities have enabled him to live thousands of years and exist in the film’s 1980′s timeline. Just as his advanced love of David Bowie and T-Rex albums have enabled him to wear really weird lipstick.

This won’t be Isaac’s first foray into tentpole films. You can soon see him in Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens as a guy whom we know jack about.

In the tradition of Marvel “What If?” scenarios, what would happen if Guardians of the Galaxy was more like Friends. Here’s what that would look like. While, not as entertaining as Spider-Pig, it’s still pretty good.

Since we all love Paul Rudd (don’t be contrarian on this one), let’s all treat a silly yearbook photo of him as news as we head into the dregs of the news cycle during this Holiday week. People have already started mainlining gravy and mumbling the word “football” over and over, so the studios have pretty much put the kibosh on anything until next Monday. Unless it’s bad news. Then we’ll get it Friday.

But until Monday or Friday, we’re gonna have to create our own news.

So here you go. I give you…news:

(Unsurprisingly, we can credit Reddit for this find.)

The post Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’ Adaptation Just Got Alright, Alright, Alright… appeared first on Screen Junkies.

By Jared Jones

Last week, Stephen King fans around the world uttered a collective cheer when it was announced that The Stand would finally receive the feature-length treatment it deserved, then doubled over in agony when they learned that said adaptation would actually be broken up into 4 feature-length films. With the success of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay and The Hobbit trilogy carving a new way for movie studios to soullessly milk us for every penny we’re worth, needlessly broken up film adaptations are hotter than Hansel right now, artistic integrity be damned, and The Stand will be no different.

But as they say, every cloud has a silver lining, and it looks like The Stand’s silver lining will come in the form of smooth-talking Texan who drove Lincoln SUV’s before he was ever paid to. The Guardian is reporting that Matthew McConaughey has been pegged for the role of Randall Flagg, the story’s lead antagonist, in the four-film version of The Stand which will be directed by The Fault in Our Stars’s Josh Boone.

The role of Flagg would really serve as a tip in the cap of McConaughey, who as you well know is having the best 2014 of any human being on this planet or any other (#InterstellarPuns). In addition to winning an Academy Award for his portrayal of Ron Woodruff in Dallas Buyers Club, McConaughey has received heaps of praise for his standout roles in Mud, True Detective, and most recently, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar.

On Kevin Smith’s “Babble On” podcast, The Stand writer/director Boone went into further detail about his original plans for the film, which he describes as “the Godfather of post-apocalyptic thrillers”, and how it came to be the multi-part epic that Warner Bros. is backing.

I really wanted to do an A-list actor, really grounded, credible version of the movie. I sold them on that and they hired me…I sold them on a single, three hour movie. I went and got [Stephen] King sold on it, everybody’s really excited…I told the story non-linear and that was the way I was able to compress that book and get everything into that script. You open with Mother Abigail dying and sending the guys off, and then you jump back in time… So what happened is the script gets finished, I write it in like five months, everybody loves it, King loves it, $87 million is what it was budgeted at, really expensive for a horror drama that doesn’t have set pieces.

They came back and said “would you do it as multiple films?” and I said “fuck yes!” I loved my script, and I was willing to drop it in an instant because you’re able to do an even truer version that way. So I think we are going to do like four movies. I can’t tell you anything about how we’re going to do them, or what’s going to be in which movie. I’ll just say we are going to do four movies, and we’re going to do THE STAND at the highest level you can do it at, with a cast that’s going to blow people’s minds. We’ve already been talking to lots of people, and have people on board in certain roles that people don’t know about.

According to Boone, production for the first installment of The Stand will begin next year, “hopefully in the spring.”

Like most of you, I was a big fan of Angelina Jolie’s sex scene in Taking Lives as a teen, and have grown to appreciate the rest of her career as well. Since making her big screen debut in 1982′s Lookin’ to Get Out, Jolie has amassed a nearly 50 acting credits and has been named Hollywood’s highest paid actress by Forbes three times since 2009, which says a lot when you realize that she’s only physically appeared in 3 movies over that span of time.

Whether she was playing a sexy, silent assassin in Mr. & Mrs. Smith or a silent, sexy, sleeper cell assassin in Salt, Jolie has established herself as the physical embodiment of the term “Fearection” and become one of Hollywood’s all-time leading ladies in the process. But with 6 children and a budding directorial career already on her plate, it appears that Jolie has simply grown too old for this acting sh*t. As such, Jolie recently confirmed her retirement from the game while promoting her most recent directorial outing, Unbroken, which hits theaters on December 25.

“I’ve never been comfortable as an actor – I’ve never loved being in front of the camera.

“I didn’t ever think I could direct, but I hope I’m able to have a career at it because I’m much happier.”

Jolie currently has two projects in post-production — the period piece By the Sea (which co-stars husband Brad Pitt) and Kung Fu Panda 3 — and has stated numerous times that her upcoming turn as Cleopatra will likely be her last role. I can think of no more fitting a role for one of Hollywood’s most badass women to go out on.

Check out the trailer for Unbroken below, then give Jolie the proper daps in the comments section.

Stephen King, not an author known for his brevity, is having one of his more epic (even by his standards) works, The Stand, adapted. Yes, again. It seems like every decade since the books release has offered up its own mini-series to tell the story about…well, the plot is a little too sprawling to encapsulate here, but suffice it to say, it has to do with the end of the world and a fight against evil, etc.

Even with such a broad range to cover, the announcement that Warner Bros. will be turning the book, which consists of three acts, into four movies seems like overkill. I mean, who do they think they are? James Cameron.

The director du jour for this ambitious project is Josh Boone, who knows something about evil after having helmed The Fault in Our Stars. Maybe we could just have the cast fight him.

We’ve seen David Fincher, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Christian Bale all leave his untitled Steve Jobs biopic for varying reasons, but now the studio itself has dropped out. Which really could prove to be an impediment.

In the wake of not being able to find an interested leading man, Sony has put the Sorkin joint in turnaround which means they don’t plan to make it any time soon if at all. There are rumors that Universal is interested in picking it up, but until that’s confirmed we should get used to knowing that the world may only get the two Steve Jobs biopics that currently exist. Chris Pratt, who’s probably got a pretty full dance card for the next decade or so, is looking to fill one more slot in it with Cowboy Ninja Viking, a graphic novel adaptation in which he plays a hit man with multiple personalities, presumably manifesting as a cowboy, a ninja, and a viking.

This would possibly be his next film after Jurassic World, which would make for three fairly high-profile pics in a row. But, if anyone can charm nation’s moviegoers into watching him play most any role, it’s Mr. Pratt. The fact that Cowboy Ninja Viking stems from some pretty awesome source material is just the icing on the cake.

There has to be an Andy Dwyer spinoff film at some point, right? Maybe a Scarecrow Boat biopic called Nothing Rhymes with Orange.

Poor Keanu Reeves. Every decade or so, he’s sitting in his greenish-lit office when he gets a message saying that he’s gotta run out and save the world. First it was The Matrix, and now it’s The Panopticon, directed by Tarsem Singh. The film will follow Reeves’ character as he gets a message from himself saying the world is going to end, and only he can save it.

Of course, he tries to save it, because he’s Keanu, and Keanu’s a trooper.

He then races against the clock (naturally) to figure out how he is supposed to save the world.

What’s a Panopticon, and why should we care? No idea. But movies with odd titles like this rarely do well. More often than not, the rubes buying a ticket will try to pronounce the title for ten seconds, then just give up and buy a ticket to that movie in which Kevin James plays a fishmonger who just needs love.

No details are available, but let’s hope that Melissa McCarthy can bring a little more charm to this role than she did in her recent outings in Tammy or even The Heat. You can’t be messing time-honored favorites like Peter Pan too much.

This will likely be Levy’s next project as he wraps up Night at the Museum 3 (UGH). The combo here is strong, but let’s hope they all make each other work a little harder than they have been, right?

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn recently made public his desire for Glenn Howerton to star in the film if Chris Pratt passed. It’s an odd choice, given that Howerton is only known for playing a skeezy jerk and is a few years older than Pratt. However, it’s also an inspired choice for the same reason that Pratt was. He’s a smart-ass, he’s funny, and he has no experience headlining a blockbuster.

It would have been very strange to see him get buff for this film, since we’re used to the scrawny Dennis. Dare I say, I’m much more comfortable with Pratt losing weight than I am with Howerton gaining mass.

However, the universe has a plan. And that plan was to have Chris Pratt star and for the film to make billions of dollars.

But, because this is the Internet, someone (CinemaGunk!)put together a fake trailer imagining what might have been:

El Chapo was caught earlier this year to the relief of Mexican law enforcement, which means it’s time to make a movie about him. And Peter Berg is just the man to do it. The film will be based on the New Yorker article, The Hunt for El Chapo.

I’m an immediate proponent about any film that documents real life crime and manhunts, and Berg, while streaky, has the chops to pull this off. So let the senseless cartel violence begin!

Because it’s a little late in his career to be kicking off new franchises, or even new film plots, we’ve seen a lot of Arnold returning to his old films. Because he’s old, and his old films are awesome. Next up on his slate after Terminator: Genisys may be a new installment of The Running Man.

Arnold conveyed as much in a London Q&A from Digital Spy in which he said:

There’s rumblings of a new Running Man movie, so it’s a great honor to be asked back… It comes back to bodybuilding. I’m used to doing cardiovascular training every day. Therefore I’m still in good shape, and I can do the action and have the energy to do these movies. They feel comfortable to ask me back and know that I can pull it off and do the stunts.

Ok, the last three sentences about bodybuilding have nothing to do with this story, but I’m including them because I think it’s funny that Arnold would take ANY topic back to bodybuilding if he saw the opportunity.

No word yet on what the premise would be, or it would be a sequel, reboot, or whatever, but we’ll find out soon enough, because people love The Running Man.

Interstellar, the next film from cinema wunderkind Christopher Nolan, has come out to tepid reviews and some weird audience complaints about the sound mix and volume. So it doesn’t seem like it would be the best first candidate for an unlimited viewing ticket event.

But it is.

AMC Theaters is offering a ticket for 19.99-34.99 depending on where you are, that will allow you to see Interstellar as many times as you would like even if that number is initially “1,” then, immediately after you see it, “0.”

It’s also odd that the first film to do this would be a 150-minute sci-fi character study, and not like The Avengers or something. We’ll see how these things fare, but I can’t imagine people will be lining up for them.

There’s no website for the tickets yet, but a press release has been issued. Until then, if this sort of thing interests you, I would check here.

Fans of creepy attempts at bridging the uncanny valley will have only Paddington to scratch their itch this holiday season, as The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part I: The First One’sfilmmakers have opted not to digitally recreate actor Philip Seymour Hoffman.

When the beloved actor died earlier this year, it was unknown how his appearance in the Mockingjay films would be handled. He was still in the midst of shooting at the time of his passing and there were reports that digital technology might be employed to finish his remaining scenes. Thankfully, the filmmakers decided to do the tasteful thing and not unleash the horror of a computer-rendered Hoffman on the world.

“He had two scenes with dialogue that were left and we decided we didn’t want to try any digital trickery with him, so we rewrote his scenes and gave the dialogue to other actors,” said director Francis Lawrence. “I just think to try to fake a Philip Seymour Hoffman performance would have been catastrophic and I would never want to do that.”

Also, Andy Serkis wasn’t available. (Huffington Post)

What a time to be alive. Last week came news of engineers finally cracking hoverboard technology, and today comes word that some equally great engineers have recreated the collapsible bong from The Cabin in the Woods.

The coffee mug that telescopes into a working water pipe for “tobacco” use is now patent pending according to the website for Iron Man Design. It’s only a matter of time before they become available for sale. Hopefully before Christmas. Not only is it functional, but it’s also a space-saver. A great day for science. A great day for man.

In fairness to Johnny Depp, I think I’d have to be drunk to attend the Hollywood Film Awards too. The Pirates of the Caribbean star entertained audiences for the first time in years with his boozy intro to Supermensch subject, Shep Gordon. The result was somewhat embarrassing but also charming as Depp cursed and heckled a microphone. No judgements here, Johnny. I can say I was equally inebriated this past Friday. Whether or not I was equally charming is up for debate.

A finger needs to be pointed toward the show producers, it really was cruel of them to expect a drunk guy could pronounce the word ‘mensch’ on national television.

Dumb and Dumber To hit theaters late last night, and enjoys its widespread release today. We thought you should know of one fun cameo in the film that would likely go by unnoticed. And if you think this is a spoiler, I have some choice words for you.

This is not a spoiler. This doesn’t affect the plot, and no one was going to recognize Bill Murray’s voice through a muffled plastic suit.

That is all.

Beyond that, Murray is just one of many, many people making cameos in the film. While we don’t have an exhaustive list, we do know that Jennifer Lawrence’s name has been thrown around a lot. But her name is always thrown around. She’s Jennifer Lawrence.

Take a look and enjoy a cat’s butt for a second.

If ever there was a role that an actor was born to play, it’s likely Christoph Waltz as a Bond villain. He’s got the smarm, he’s got the gravity, and he’s definitely got the humor to cut the tension. He’s…perfect. So we can all get a little excited that, according to the Daily Mail, Waltz has all but signed on to play a villain who is a “complex” character.

Eh, normally I’m all for complex villains, but this is a Bond film with Christoph Waltz. Let’s not reinvent the wheel. I want an over the top caricature, and I want it…soon.

The next Bond is the untitled Bond 24, and was originally slated to have Chiwetel Ejiofor in it, but he dropped out as the villain, leaving this opportunity for Waltz. Daniel Craig will return as our dark hero.

Following in the footsteps of Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties, The Conjuring sequel will be hopping across the pond to jolly, old, haunted-as-f*ck England. New Line has announced that The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist will re-open the case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren in theaters on June 10, 2016 with James Wan at the helm once more.

The Enfield Poltergeist refers to claims of poltergeist activity in a village in England in the late 1970s that involved levitating children and demonic possession. So, basically The Conjuring but in England. It’s a popular trope for a sequel to head overseas, though we’ll have to wait to see what makes this film distinct besides Vera Farmiga suddenly putting mayonnaise on french fries. The studio hopes that this followup to the smash hit will be just as successful and paves the way for Annabelle In Space. (THR)

Josh Trank has been pretty tight-lipped about how badly he’s going to ruin The Fantastic Four with his upcoming reboot but every once and awhile we’re treated to little drips and drops of information. For instance, this time they plan to continue the screen tradition of ruining Doctor Doom.

Toby Kebbell has revealed that Victor von Doom is now named Victor Domashev. He’s no longer the European dictator of Latveria, but instead a real asshole on Internet message boards. He tells Collider:

He’s Victor Domashev, not Victor Von Doom in our story. And I’m sure I’ll be sent to jail for telling you that. The Doom in ours–I’m a programmer. Very anti-social programmer. And on blogging sites I’m “Doom”.

This would explain leaked script pages that feature Doom declaring himself “FRIST!!1!” and asking The Thing if he even lifts. At least he’ll be easy to dress.

It seems as though David O. Russell is on a strange kick these days. He’s really digging the character studies. First, with American Hustle, there was a lot going on, but not a lot of action, aside from the turmoil of the four protagonists, and now, with Joy, he’s telling the story of Joy Mangano, the found of the Miracle Mop.

What’s so special about Joy? Did she commit a murder? Was she an immigrant from a war-torn nation?

Nope. She was a single mother from Long Island who invented a bunch of stuff and became a fixture on the Home Shopping Network. That’s it. That’s Joy’s story.

So we find it intriguing that Russell would devote a whole project to her. Jennifer Lawrence will  play the title role, and Robert De Niro will play her father. So far, so good, and the script, originally written by Bridesmaids writer Annie Mumolo, is being rewritten by Russell himself.

Ok, David. You’ve got our attention.

Lest you thought the playful stereotyping of Greeks was something reserved for the last decade…NO. Making fun of people of foreign descent is timeless fun, and Universal is going to prove it again with My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2: Greekin’ Hard or Hardly Greekin’? (subtitle mine). It was originally thought to go straight to HBO, but now it’s looking like a theatrical release for this bad boy.

And not only are they coming back with stars Nia Vardalos and John Corbett, but they’re bringing in the big guns with Kirk Jones directing. “What has Kirk Jones done, because I don’t know because I’m ignorant?” you might ask. Oh, nothing. Just NANNY MCPHEE. And WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING.

This is gonna be gold.

What’s the plot of the sequel? A bigger, fatter wedding. Really. It’s another wedding. The title isn’t just a nod back to the first one. There’s ANOTHER WEDDING.

Vardalos wrote this script as well, and the producers of the original, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are coming back. So while this might not be the sleeper hit that the 2002 original was, it’s likely to be a regular hit.

In the vein of The Other Guys and the Jumpstreet franchise, we’re seeing quite the 1980′s buddy-cop rennaiassance. Next up is Central Intelligence starring the hulking Dwayne Johnson and the diminutive lil’ Kevin Hart as former classmates who get mixed up in a CIA plot following their reunion.

Johnson will play a former high school nerd who got bullied, and Hart will play the jock who settled into an ordinary life. The hilarity of the flashbacks could be a strong enough selling point to get audiences into the theaters.

The film will be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who, in addition to having the WASPiest name in history, also directed We’re the Millers. So the jury’s still out on whether this piece of news is a good or bad thing.

But The Rock and Kevin Hart in a buddy cop movie sounds like a no-brainer.

In a case of art imitating life imitating art and so on, Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer and guitarist for Green Day, will be starring in Geezer, a film about an aging punk who realizes everyone else is getting on in his life while he treads water. I’m willing to hazard a guess that this is semi-autobiographical.

Armstrong will star alongside Fred Armisen and Selma Blair in this comedy, though the premise doesn’t sound very funny. It sounds…sad. Oh well, Fred Armisen is funny. He’ll fix it. Judy Greer will also star in it. She’s funny, too.

For the Green Day fans out there, Billie Joe has written several songs for the soundtrack, so at the very least, you can go for the music, and stay for the existential dread regarding the ennui of adulthood.

PUNK ROCK!

It was a few years back with The Fantastic Mr. Fox that the world realized that Wes Anderson‘s quirk was no longer contained to just the human, real world. A few years later, after Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel, it sounds like the auteur will be returning to the medium. Or at least something like it.

I don’t know the difference between stop-motion animation and puppets, if there even is one. But I’m guessing that the people who do are very passionate and vocal about their expertise. So please, be kind.

Anderson discussed his plans at the Lisbon and Estoril Film Festival, where he said that he was working up on an episodic story, to be told with puppets. The story is based on the film anthology The Gold of Naples, which tells six stories all with the same geographic setting. That’s right. Naples.

We’ll let you know if this thing goes from dream to concept whenever that may be.
