Dan Harmon Isn’t Super Bummed About ‘Community’ Cancellation

When news broke that NBC had cancelled Community, we were all worried about Dan Harmon. How would he take the news? Would there be yelling and breaking things and then rolling around on those pieces of broken things while crying?? Instead, he has responded with calm and maturity and didn’t even say the word rape.

“I was on my way to LAX and somebody from Sony called me,” Harmon said. “The fans of that show have more reason to be upset than I do. I can try to make another show and also I got paid for every minute I cared about that show. The people that are most devastated are people who put unpaid labor into the show [aka fans]. They didn’t get compensated for it. They loved the show.”

But it’s still coming back, though, right? RIGHT?!! Before you get all worked up, don’t. Harmon cautions fans that it will be an incredible battle to bring the show back elsewhere. The campaign will be long and taxing and families will be torn apart, and he can’t ask the fans to do that. In the words of Adele Dazeem, let it go. Although, in the case that it isn’t difficult, that’d be cool too.

Anyway, I will not be standing in the way. I’m sorry to anyone that’s really taking this cancellation hard. I know how I felt when these fuckers killed Max Headroom. But you sit back and treat yourself to some New Girl and Parks and Mindy and Brooklyn 99 and Eagleheart and Portlandia and have you seen Matt Berry’s Toast of London? It’s awesome. Also not to be selfish but maybe check out Rick and Morty. And let TV be the needy clown that it’s still very overpaid to be, and let the suits deal with the suits and see what possibilities exist. That’s the best we can do for now. Ninety seven episodes. Over eighty pretty good ones. Mission accomplished.

He’s taking it well and looking ahead. It’s refreshing to see someone so prone to obsession walk away without having burned everything down.
