  1. "The Shining" This movie was made in 1980 and stars Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall. It is based on a book written by Stephen King and is one of the most scary ghost movies out there. There is another version but it's not nearly as creepy. It is about a family that become caretakers of a haunted hotel. With snow blanketing everything, the atmosphere is haunting.
  2. "The Devil's Backbone" This is a 2001 Guillermo Del Toro movie about a ghost in an orphanage during the Spanish Civil War in 1939. It's a Spanish speaking film that has a great story line and excellent scares.
  3. "Thir13en Ghosts" This ghost movie is actually a remake of a 1960 movie. It's about a collector who leaves his entire estate to his nephew but in that estate there are ghosts that are part of the gift.
  4. "The Sixth Sense" Written by M. Night Shyamalan in 1999 and starring Bruce Willis, "The Sixth Sense" is about a boy who talks to the dead. With an awesome twist ending and a creepy atmosphere, this is one of the best ghost movies there is.
  5. "The Others" "The Others" is another creepy ghost movie with a twist ending you don't see coming. Released in 2001 and starring Nicole Kidman, the main character lives in an old mansion with two children that are photosensitive. This keeps everyone in the dark and when she believes her house is haunted, things really start getting scary.
  6. "What Lies Beneath" This movie released in 2000, stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford as a couple in Vermont. The husband is a research scientist and his wife believes she is either going crazy or seeing a ghost. This movie has a twist ending like so many other ghost movies.
  7. "Poltergeist" "Poltergeist" will be a classic ghost movie for years to come. Made in 1982 and starring JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson and Heather O'Rourke, this Steven Spielberg movie was ahead of its time. With scares and thrills, the story line never suffers. The plot is simple: a couple and their family are living in a house that seems to be haunted by a host of various ghosts. There has been much tragedy associated with this movie since two of the children have since passed away at a young age.
  8. "The Orphanage" This is a Spanish movie with the original title of "El orfanato" and was presented by Guillermo Del Toro. Made in 2007, it is about a woman who runs an orphanage and starts seeing a child ghost. There is a surprising ending and it is one of the more bittersweet ghost stories made.
  9. "Ghost Ship" "Ghost Ship" is about a group of salvagers that come across an abandoned 1962 passenger ship. Everything is not as it seems and there are plenty of ghosts, blood and story line to treat everyone to an excellent movie. It stars Julianna Margulies, Desmond Harrington, Gabriel Byrne and Ron Eldard.
  10. "Stir of Echoes" This movie was made in 1999 and stars Kevin bacon as a party goer who gets hypnotized by a family member. Once he's under, his mind opens doors to a ghost that is reaching out to him. The story is excellent and the movie is quite scary. It also includes Jennifer Morrison in one of her first roles.
