Despite often being over hyped and budgeted, apocalyptic films can be fun. Think about it–plenty of action, explosions, drama, and terrific special effects. Additionally, in many cases these movies feature A-list actors and actresses. One of the most talked about apocalyptic movies of recent memory was "2012." Starring John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, and Danny Glover, "2012" was actually fun to watch despite its unfavorable reviews. Below are four other entertaining apocalyptic movies.

"The Day After Tomorrow"

Starring Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal, "The Day After Tomorrow" was a pretty decent movie centered around a deep freeze that pretty much decimated the entire Northern Hemisphere. The movie has its share of blunders, but overall it's fun; especially at the end of the film where it is reported that Americans were actually causing issues by crossing over the Mexican border.

"Armageddon"

One of the most criticized movies of recent times is "Armageddon," a 1998 apocalyptic movie about a team of drillers who are tasked with the mission of drilling and placing a nuclear bomb inside an asteroid that's on a collision course with the planet Earth. Despite the negative reviews and Ben Affleck, the movie is fairly entertaining as it also stars Bruce Willis, Steve Buscemi, and the lovely Liv Tyler.

"Deep Impact"

"Deep Impact" was released the same year as "Armageddon." Though it did not enjoy the box office success as "Armageddon," it was received slightly better by the critics. Starring Elijah Wood, Tea Leoni, Robert Duvall, and Morgan Freeman, "Deep Impact" is certainly worth renting as it features not one, but two deadly asteroids that are set to destroy most of the planet.

"Independence Day"

Independence Day

Easily the best movie on this list is the 1996 classic, "Independence Day." Starring Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica Fox, Judd Hirsch, and Randy Quaid, this science fiction thriller tells the story of an alien race who nearly wiped out the human race with its superior technology. However, Pullman, Smith, and many other survivors manage to resist. Rumors of a sequel have been circulating the last several years.
