Bare It All For the Screen: 5 Movies About Pornstars
Porn is one of the most watched things in the world on a daily basis, making it one of the biggest industries in the entertainment business. Given pornography's clandestine beginnings, the business was often populated with a diverse array of crazy characters. Not all of them may have been good people, but they don't made for good watching. Not just in their chosen films, but also in movies about the porn business. Below are some of the best movies ever made about the porn industry and the men and women who have starred in it, front and center.
Perhaps the most cinematic and well-directed film about the porn industry is Paul Thomas Anderson's "Boogie Nights," which follows a male porn star with a massive penis in the 1970s. This main character is played by Mark Wahlberg right about the time people began to take him seriously as an actor and he bares it all in the final shot of the film. Then again, he didn't really; we all know that was prosthetic. Apart from that though, the movie has a rich cast of characters, almost all of whom get believably fleshed out with compelling storylines. This was one of the best films of the 1990s.
John Holmes is one of the best-known male porn stars to ever work in the porn industry, however he is also well-known for being a drug addict and getting himself tied up in something called the Wonderland murders. This film, starring Val Kilmer as John Holmes, is about that, and it's gritty and downright strange. While it's not the best movie, it still gives us an inside view to the darker side of porn.
"The Girl Next Door."
The girl next door follows some high school kids who find out the girl who moved in next door is actually a porn star. However, she takes them on a coming-of-age adventure that actually helps them to lose their virginity and innocence. A decent movie, it's basically the Tom Cruise classic "Risky Business" with a porn star as the focus of the film. However, if you're going to remake that type of coming of age classic, they don't do a bad job.
"The Notorious Betty Page."
One of the first porn stars in America, Betty Page is an icon to the porn industry and the perfect character for a bio-pic from director Mary Herron, who also did "American Psycho." Former "it-girl" Gretchen Mol is perfect in look and action for the role. This is a look into the "classic" porn industry, if there is such a thing. This film shows how it existed in an era before VHS and the internet, when men in raincoats had to sneak out to a secluded theater.
"The People Vs. Larry Flynt."
Larry Flynt is one of the most notorious names in the porn business and this bio-pic that follows his rise to power, his assassination attempt and where he is now. Expertly played by Woody Harrelson, and directed by Milos Foreman this film takes a pretty honest approach to its lead subject. While Flynt isn't a technical porn star, he is in his own way, as he changed the entire pornography game, and he struck a blow in favor a free speech with his trial.
