“DAMMIT, DAD! I’M NOT A FAILURE!”
Giovanni Ribisi sounds pretty nasal under the best of circumstances, so catching him during a crying fit can be a little tough on the ears. He’s at his wit’s end, and his world is crumbling, so it’s fitting that he would cry, but it’s just…it’s just…does he have to do it in front of the audience? Wouldn’t he like some more privacy. It’s pretty emasculating.
Here’s a tricky beast because it is a heartfelt scene with great acting by Ewan McGregor, but it’s also Moulin Rouge. Watching this for the first time a decade ago, I was horribly conflicted as to whether I should feel investment in this character or should stay arm’s-length because it’s Moulin Rouge.
I mean, he’s sad, but a whole troupe just did a dance number that referenced Nirvana in fin de siècle Paris. It’s hard to know what to think.
