A mid-life crisis is not just something psychiatrists and psychologists talk about. It is a real-life event that can hit any man as he reaches middle age. Many times, the crisis may be set off when a man believes his life is unfulfilling. In other cases, life events trigger crises that men can’t control. In some cases, the man’s significant other may go through a crisis and he has to pick up the pieces. Here are six midlife crisis movies that every man should watch.

"Lost In Translation" (2003)

Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is a lonely actor in Tokyo. He is stuck in an unfulfilling marriage. While staying at a hotel, he meets young Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) who is married to a photographer. The photographer pays far more attention to his models than his wife. Bob and Charlotte develop a platonic friendship and they get along extremely well. When Bob has to return home, he realizes that he has feelings for Charlotte and she returns those feelings. While they don’t act on their feelings, Bob chases her down just before he heads to the airport and whispers something in her ear that fulfills them both.

"American Beauty" (1999)

Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) is in his mid-40s and he is going through a midlife crisis. His career is falling apart and so is his marriage. Instead of trying save either or both, he accelerates their demise because he is tired of going through the motions. While going through this “crisis,” Burnham discovers that his teenage next door neighbor sells first-rate marijuana and he also develops a crush on his teenage daughter’s friend Angela (Mena Suvari). It ends badly for Burnham when his next door neighbor’s father gets the wrong idea about Burnham’s relationship with his son.

"The Descendants" (2011)

Matt King (George Clooney) is dealing with a crisis because his wife Elizabeth (Patricia Hastie) is on life support following a boating accident. Matt and his wife were having problems in their marriage and now he must start being an active parent to his two daughters. While the relationship was troubled, Matt is also angry about the affair his wife was having prior to her injury.

"Sideways" (2004)

Jack (Thomas Haden Church) is about to get married and he goes on a trip with his buddy Miles (Paul Giamatti) in California’s wine country to celebrate his upcoming nuptials. Neither man has accomplished much at the mid-portion of their lives and they go on a series of misadventures. Miles wants to give his friend a great weekend, but Jack is only interested in hooking up with whomever he can get to go to bed with him.

"Unfaithful" (2002)

Ed Sumner (Richard Gere) is married to beautiful Connie (Diane Lane) and they appear to have a perfect marriage because they have a beautiful home, a wonderful son and all the trappings of a good life. However, Connie ends up having an affair with Paul Martel (Olivier Martinez) and that leads to complications. When Ed finds out about his wife’s extramarital activities, he puts an end to the relationship. His midlife crisis spins out of control.

"Thelma and Louise" (1991)

Every man should watch this movie because it shows what can happen to women when they are ignored, unfulfilled or treated badly. Thelma (Geena Davis) and Louise (Susan Sarandon) go off on a weekend trip together because they are bored and looking for fun and excitement. When Thelma gets into trouble outside a Country and Western bar with a cowboy who won't take no for an answer, Louise shoots the would-be rapist and it puts the duo on a downward spiral that ends somewhere over the Grand Canyon.
