Climactic, sometimes sad movie scenes are what draw the audience into the story. There are a lot of sad movie scenes out there that have the ability to invoke the shedding of a little eye water from even the hardest guy. Tear jerkers are nothing new in cinema. If you’ve ever had to sit through a chick flick with your lady friend, chances are, you’ve been exposed to a sad scene or two. But, these four scenes are a little more moist than all the rest.
“The Notebook” (2004). Spoiler alert. As far as chick flicks go, this movie has to be the softest flick of them all. It’a about a poor guy Noah, played by Ryan Gosling, that falls for a the rich girl Allie, Rachel McAdams. Well, to make a long and sappy story incredibly shorter, these two star crossed lovers battle through societal influence and hardships to be together. The saddest scene of the flick, and the one that’ll make you cry is when the older versions of these characters played by James Garner and Gena Rowlands die together in a nursing home. Go ahead, it’s ok to get misty eyed.
“Up” (2009). Yeah you’re probably saying “wait a minute, ‘Up’ is a kids movie, right?”. Yes it is, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have one of the saddest scenes in the movies, ever. Edward Asner plays the grumpy old man Carl. Well the reason the the old guy is so damn mean is because he lost the love of his life. Moviegoers find this out in the first ten minutes of the movie. Don’t worry, the rest of the flick is funny, but you may need to keep some emergency tissue stashed so you can clear your eyes before someone notices your ocular precipitation.
“Glory” (1989). This Civil War flick centers around the the racism and hardships that African American Union fighters had to deal with on all sides during the war. The extremely horrific conditions that these men had to live and fight in are almost too inhuman to describe. The racial hatred was just has barbaric. There is one particular sad scene that’ll make anyone cry. Trip, played by Denzel Washington, was caught trying to steal some decent shoes to wear because the Union army didn’t think it necessary to supply African American soldiers with adequate equipment. His punishment is ten lashes with a whip. Denzel Washington lets out a single tear. A seriously, gut wrenching, tear jerking scene.
“My Girl” (1991). The movie isn’t that great. But, as annoying as Thomas is, played by Macaulay Culkin, no one was prepared for his death. Yes, his death. The poor kid gets stung to death by a swarm of bees. So sad. Yeah, you’d cry if you saw it. Don’t judge. It’s easily one of the saddest scenes that will leave no eye dry.
