Jodie Foster was quick to come to Mel’s defense after each of his scandals. It’s no wonder. Did you see their chemistry in Maverick? Foster explains her old friend saying, “He’s not a perfect person. He’s a complicated person. That’s why I love him. He’s not just some guy who wants to pose for GQ.”
He’d might be the cover-boy for You Need A F*cking Bat In The Side of the Head Illustrated.
Dean Devlin stepped in to defend the star back in 2006 during his anti-Semitic scandal. The filmmaker, who is Jewish himself, pointed out the complicated nature of the issue due to the role alcohol played in that incident. “If Mel is an anti-Semite, then he spends a lot of time with us, which makes no sense. But he is an alcoholic, and while that makes no excuse for what he said, because there is no excuse, I believe it was the disease speaking, not the man.”
Outspoken Hollywood’s “always friendly all of the time” guy Robert De Niro offered kind words toward Gibson. When asked about the controversial star at a press conference, he commented, “I hope he gets through all this. It’s unfortunate, you know.”
That’s the press conference equivalent of “sucks to be you!!”
