In the film industry generally a movies success is measured by its gross revenue so here is a list of the 10 most successful movies of all time based on worldwide gross revenue to date. Going to the movies is one the biggest past times and a great source of entertainment. Every week a new movie is coming out some do well others bad and a select view become box office hits.

  1. "Avatar." The 2009 hit 3D movie directed and produced by James Cameron has become the most successful film of all time surpassing Titanic grossing $2,778,464,644 worldwide. Set in 2154 this technologically advanced produced movie is about a scientific group who threaten the existence of Pandora.
  2. "Titanic." The 1997 classic love story of Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt  based on historical events also directed by James Cameron held the number one spot for the most successful film of all time until last year when "Avatar" took its place. To date "Titanic" has grossed $1,842,879,955 worldwide.
  3. "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King." The final installment of the "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy directed by Sir Peter Jackson based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" books. Grossing $1,119,027,325 worldwide and winning eleven Academy Awards, this fantasy film is surely one of the most successful movies all of time.
  4. "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest." The second film of the adventure fantasy series about Jack Sparrow played by Johnny Depp, "Pirates of the Caribbean," released in 2006 directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. It has grossed $1,065,659,812 worldwide with an opening weekend of $136 million in the United States.
  5. "Toy Story 3." Released in June this year "Toy Story 3" has already grossed $1,062,806,932 worldwide and is the highest-grossing film of 2010. The 3D animated movie released by Walt Disney Pictures, produced by Pixar Studios and directed by Lee Unkrich is the final film of the "Toy Story" series. The classic movie now see’s Andy on his way to college and the adventures of Woody to save Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the toys.
  6. "Alice in Wonderland." An amazing direction by Tim Burton on this movie based on the book "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll published in 1865. Using live action and 3D animation Burton tells the story of Alice thirteen years later in Underland. Released March this year the movie has now grossed $1,023,291,110 worldwide to date.
  7. "The Dark Knight." The critically acclaimed movie released in 2008 saw an Academy Award winning performance by Heath Ledger as Joker, his last before his untimely death. With rave reviews "The Dark Knight" has grossed $1,001,945,358 worldwide and simply the best movie in Christopher Nolan's "Batman" film series.
  8. "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." The first movie of the famous Harry Potter series based on the series novel by J.K. Rowling tailing the story of a young wizard Harry Potter and his adventures at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Released in 2001 and directed by Chris Columbus it has gone on to gross $974,775,550.
  9. "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End." Released in 2007 this is the third film in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. With the biggest budget to make to date of $300,000,000 it grossed $960,996,492 worldwide the second most successful movie in the series.
  10. "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix." The fifth movie and the second most successful of the fantasy adventure "Harry Potter" series released in 2007 and continues to tail the story of the young wizard Harry Potter at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. To date it has grossed $938,468,864 worldwide and it quite possibly the best of the series thus far.
