Gear up for a movie marathon with 10 great 80’s movies. Movies reflect the culture of the era. The 80's had many great movies. Many of these 80's movies were so great sequels followed.

  1. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” (1982) This great 80’s movie is about a little boy, Elliot, who finds an alien. Elliot then has to help E.T. go home to his planet. Not only was this a top movie of the 80’s, but it is one of the most successful movies of all time.

  2. “Back to the Future” (1985) It just wouldn’t be the 80’s without this great movie. This movie is about a teenage boy who accidently gets sent back in time and then has to make sure his parents meet before he can return home. The movie was loaded with pop culture, which was one reason it was such a hit. The movie was so successful that it became a trilogy and still has a cult following today.

  3. “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981) You couldn’t have lived through the 80’s withou knowing wh Indiana Jones is. The movie is set in 1936 and centers on the adventuring archeologist. The movie was so good that they couldn’t stop with one. The movie has held popularity through generations and a fourth movie was released in 2008.

  4. “Poltergeist” (1982) This is the movie that made you fear your house was buried on an ancient burial ground. The movie is about a young family, the Freelings, who move into what looks like a wonderful new subdivision. Soon after moving in the family is haunted by what appears to be friendly ghost. The ghost don’t stay friendly and soon start to terrorize the family. This is one of the best horror movies of all time and started a trilogy.

  5. “Airplane!” (1980) This is one of the funniest movies ever created. It’s about a couple that is no longer together being stuck on a plane together where the crew and passengers fall ill from food poisoning. The movie was full of jokes and also features the comedy of Leslie Nielsen, who died in November of 2010.  

  6. “Ghost Busters” (1984) This is one of the greatest 80’s comedy movies. It’s about three off the wall scientist who study the occult. After getting kicked out of their university positions, they set up a ghost hunting business. The movie spawned a sequel and a cartoon series.

  7. “Gremlins” (1984) This is another great iconic 80’s movie that just couldn’t stop at one. It’s about a small town where a teenage boy is given a cute little furry creature as an early Christmas gift. He fails to follow the simple rules of caring for the creature and his town ends up overtaken by small green monsters.

  8. “Die Hard” (1988) This is a police movie about one New York City Detective whose Christmas is ruined by a terrorist plot. The movie stars Bruce Willis and has spawned another three movies that all star him. There are also video games and a comic book series.

  9. “Aliens” (1986) This is one of the greatest science fiction movies. It’s about Ellen Ripley who survives an attack from the aliens. No one believes her but then after the colony is completely destroyed, she is sent with a team to try to recover any survivors and confirm what happened to them. Multiple movies followed and even spin offs that combined the “Alien” movies with the “Predator” movies.

  10. “Batman” (1989) This movie was based on the comic book hero. The movie tells how Batman saves the city of Gotham from The Joker. Other movies followed the successes of this one. Also, after the success of adapting the comic book into films, many other comic book heroes have hit the big screen.
